Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 to be released January 11, 2010 for $1,010?
The leaky online retailer eXpansys UK has potentially outed yet another release date for an upcoming handset. This time around it is the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2. According to the product page, the X2 is expected to arrive on January 11th, 2010 — a tad bit later than its announced Q4 2009 release. Pricing, well, is a ridiculous £604.99 ($1,010 USD) for an unlocked version from eXpansys. Expect the price to fall prior to launch of course, as a price that high would effectively kill any chance of success for this Windows Mobile handset. Sony Ericsson may be on a downward slide lately but it can’t be that self-destructive. Even with a price drop, is anyone excited by this phone or is it just another offering in a long line of Windows Mobile phones, soon to be overshadowed by the Android-powered XPERIA X3?

Ummm… How about no? That price is outrageous.
even the original iphone at $600 was a sales disaster before Apple and AT&T worked out a subsidy agreement
I would like to have this phone, but wouldn’t pay over $300 for it…the X1 is still a high priced phone, and with talks of the X3, why would anyone put that kind of money into this device…i could make a down payment on another vehicle…
$1010 for winmo? Hell no.
I would have bought it, has it not been for cheap restive screen and price tag about 4-5 times greater than I am willing to pay for the phone of these capabilities.
Rachael!!
All i will say is welcome to the UK. Where consumers continiously get bum*****d by coporate companies. With a direct conversion rate(by switching the currency unit), they can use excuses such as higher taxes/VAT that need to be paid as well as other unknown probably unaccounted fees to push the cost of the product and double(sometimes triple) their profits.
Sony Ecrisson must be out of their mind to think this ridiculous pricing wouldnt get un-noticed. With a last gen CPU (although most of their buyers will probably careless about that) they must feel the 8meg and a fancy UI skin equates to premium. Absolute Bollocks.
The price doesn’t shock me one bit actually. Sony is great at over pricing their phones. Get lost Sony.
Oh, sony.
Why do you think the Android will overshadow this? Android is just a clumsy OS, I’ve used it. Have you ever uses a WM phone recently? Probably not, just talking about your blow hole.
Why is it that people always say, “wow they have to cover up WM” yet when Android get the same skin from Sony and HTC everyone yells “COOL!” Idiots.
r u kidding me. The x1a for the states was a failure. If the x2 costs that much imagine the x3.
Sony has lost sight on the people. Who ever develops these price schemes is just plain ignorant. If sony is loosing its foothold in the economy, then its because they are doing bullshit like this. At the end of the day whether they get their money or not, they get what they asked for. as for me, Sony died with the launch of the x1a for the states.

Why do these oversea companies charge so much for these phones? Vodafone will get for € 0.00 for a three year contract.
Well, expansys is always known to jack up the price of cell phones so I wouldn’t be surprised if it falls around release time.
Still, if they have this thing at around $500, it can be a game changer for Sony. If the price reaches above $700, it’s gonna die a quick death in the US.
It’s just TOO MUCH money in this economy for anything luxury, period.
I understand that BGR knows the price is inaccurate, but for those who keep ragging on the price of the X2
You do realize Expansys over prices EVERYTHING they PRESELL right?
Using that site as an indicator of price for the X2 is about as accurate as getting Madam Marie to predict it.
This puts the X3 in line to be priced at $1250+
Heh, like people will drop a grand for a phone… that probably wont even be eligible for insurance. Pfft, what economy recession?
This phone will be a commercial disaster.
Released in 2010 with a 3 year old chipset, 3.2 resistive screen….
Seriously.
I have already heard people call it the TOILET PHONE.
It would be better if they did not release it at all.
I bought both the X1A and the Sony Vaio P “netbook” and both were underpowered disasters. Both looked and felt like engineering marvels, Sony’s exterior engineering is almost on par with Apple, but they’re generally over-priced, under powered internals as well.
I returned each one to the Sony Style store minus their 20% restocking fee. Never again Sony.
I dont see what everyone is crying about here, if you dont want to pay, dont buy it.
We are sure to expect this around the $800 mark and should be the premium WM full qwerty in the US. If you like that kinda thing.
SE is not Apple, they cant sell 30 million of any phone if they could this would be the price you are all willing to pay.
im loyal 2 sony-ericson but a 1000$ for z X2?? mamma mia!!! too much… what they r thinkin?? how about Buy 1 get 1 free
hehe abt 500 is good
Is Sony serious??
Haven’t they learned a lesson from the dismal sales numbers of the PS3. UH…hello Sony, you seriously may want to reconsider walking down the path of buffoonery again. We’re not going to buy you’re wannabe iPhone for that ridiculous price.
@alen,
Your joking right? The $600 8gb original iPhone was a sales disaster? It was one of the most successful releases of a phone ever. They sold 700,000 phones the first weekend of it’s debut and people lined up a day or more in advance with tremendously long lines everywhere. I can’t see how anyone can call apples debut weekend of iPhone back in 2007 a sales disaster.

If the phone is good enough and they are able to drum up demand, they will sell them. If Apple were to announce a new iPhone with OLED screen, 5mp camera, and a flash … They would sell for that much. Not as much as it would have pre-recession, but it would have sold.
But for a Windows Mobile device? It would not do very well. As a whole people aren’t very excited when it comes to winmo. They are pretty much the kid shoved in the corner that nobody talks to except a few that feed him chips every once in a while.

If this become available for 3G on the AT&T network I might go for it. I currently have an iPhone but I actually like the WinMo OS. I’m also waiting for the AT&T release of the TP2.
