HTC Touch HD 2 to run Android, bump up CPU speed, more

In a world overflowing with full touchscreen handsets, HTC’s design and build quality is among the best. Recent handsets supporting that statement include the myTouch 3G, the Hero, the Hero and of course the Touch HD seen above. HTC fans may have new cause for celebration today as a rumor suggests the sequel to the the device that started the “HD” naming trend among handsets may be on the horizon. Register Hardware reports that conversations with HTC have drummed up some info on the upcoming Touch HD 2 (or more likely touch “HD2″ to maintain the Pro, Pro2 format). The blog reports that HTC’s upcoming HD sequel will run Android as opposed to Windows Mobile as found in its predecessor; a move we wouldn’t mind at all. Other rumored tidbits include a faster 628 MHz processor, up from 528 MHz in the original HD, and a 3.8-inch touchscreen display just like the HD. The presence of Android could lead to a capacitive screen however, though that’s just speculation on our part. Hopefully we’ll get official word from HTC soon, or at least a good old fashioned leak with some evidence to support it. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get some HD love in the US this time around.

    So, what advantage does Android offer over WinMo? Does it have any features that WinMo 2003 didn’t have?

    @MiniMe,
    What does Android have what winmo doesn’t? Winmo has an ugly outdated interface that nobody likes and everyone wants to cover up. Winmo has a very clunky interface that takes lots of taps to do anything. Winmo comes with a poor excuse of an office suite, poor multimedia playback, and a poor native browser. You have to rely on 3rd party apps just to make it usable. There is more. Android improves on all this.

    @Christopher Cox,

    WinMo can look any UI you can imagine. Take a look at TouchFlo or SPB creations. So far, Android looked like first generation of Palm, released in the late 1990s.

    The UI, however, is not a big thing here. UI can be made to look like anything with themes. What about functionality? Lot’s of taps? Did you see Balckberry? Most things in WinMo require 1-2 taps. I doubt that the average tapping in Android is less (don’t give examples of individual tasks, cause it can be countered with the same examples from WInMo). Office? Office is great. Ability to read any Word, Excel or PowerPoint doc on your phone on the go is priceless. Did you try going to a meeting with BB, Apple or Android just to find out that they don’t support simplest things?

    Third-party apps? Give me an example of the first-party app that Android has, but WinMo doesn’t? But WinMo has tens of thousands of apps on top of it, which Android doesn’t. Sorry to come through as negative, but I’ve yet to see anything of Android that didn’t exist 6 years ago on Windows, yet people get excited about it.

    Lol the mytouch HD now that has a nice ring to it. Hopefully it will have a flash and a dedicated camera button.

    @MiniMe,
    You seriously think the office app that comes with the latest winmo is any good?you either only load simple soca or have never tried another office suite on mobile. Maybe a combination of both. QuickOffice for iPhone and docstogo on bb will run circles around the crap excuse for an office suite. I’ve used winmo for a while. It takes way more taps and requires way more of your attention than android or iPhone. They are both better on the go than winmo.

    If you think that Winmo comes even close to android… You probably never used android in real life.. I own the Hero (after several WinMo devices) and it blows away winmo in terms of speed, consistency and ease of use. And with the sense gui it’s even better!

    Gogo android!!

    If Android doesn’t require a soft reset every 30 minutes of use, then its a WAY better OS than WinMo!

    This will never happen. Too much competition for the iphone so it will not happen. HTC will continue to keep the HD out of the US. I hope I am wrong because i would buy the HD2 with a 3.8 inch screen in a nanosecond. Palm blew it when they made the Pre so small. Had they made it with a 3.5inch or bigger screen, it would have rivaled the iphone but they have idiots managing that company.
