Nokia brewing a 12.1 megapixel camera phone?

Where the heck was this thing during Nokia World? Some interesting images popped up in the Flickr stream of mobile video game and UI designer Marcelo Eduardo over the past few days. A few images of the just-announced Nokia N900… An iPod touch… An N97… Oh yeah, and a shot of an unannounced Nokia handset sporting a 12.1 megapixel camera. Now of course we cannot verify the authenticity of the shot but it’s only logical that Nokia, disputed king of the camera phone, is working on a higher resolution shooter to catch up to the likes of Sony Ericsson. Beyond the carbon fiber-look battery cover (classy) and the clear presence of “12.1 megapixel” on the back, we really have no details about this handset — which brings us to the one stand-out oddity here. Nokia’s higher-resolution camera phones are typically not overly subtle in conveying the presence of sweet optics. The N86 8MP for example, has “Carl Zeiss – Tessar 2.4-4.8/4.7 – Wide-Angle Lens – 8MP/AF” printed on the lens cover. Perhaps this is an early prototype without the finishing touches present, or perhaps Nokia is going a different route with this little guy. Or, you know, the pic might be fake.

UPDATE: Eduardo updated the title of his image to confirm that this is, in fact, a fake.

Are they missing the point here? It’s a phone not a camera. I’m not saying that a camera phone is wrong (iPhone owner) but 12.1 Megapixels is pro grade right?

Not sure if this is real, but 3 trusted sources confirm Nokia has a 12 mp camera in the works, possibly an N93 successor. And 12 mp isn’t “pro grade”, just “top of the heap”, something Nokia used to always reach for with cameras until recently.

Uh really? Sureeeee.. 3 days ago Eldar posted that Nokia do not have priority on developing 12 MP phone, and it is not even on the roadmap for 2010. I think Eldar has proved more reliable than you and your 3 anonymous trusted sources :)

    ROLF!!

This is nothing but yet another ugly and cheap Chinese phone designed to be sold on the black market with typical working time from midnight to morning!? Nokia is not crazy enough to put single led flash on a 12 MPX beast, not to mention that phone lacks the Carl Zeiss optic and the lens protector, fake 100%!!!!!

I don’t use flickr, so wasn’t able to see anything from the BGR link, and CellPassion didn’t mention it either. But thanks for being such a helpful little booger. Now back to class, kid. (Does anyone have any manners nowadays?)

Thanks, mikymike, for the link! Nice to see people willing to help one another.

    @ CanisMajor,

A friend and Editor in Chief at another mobile blog I sometimes contribute content for was on a special Carl Zeiss Factory tour recently, and he confirmed with both a Nokia and Carl Zeiss representative that a 12 mp camera was on the way, and middle to late 2010 should be its retail debut window.

I’m a big Eldar fan, and trust him fully, but he isn’t the monopoly on information. In fact, he gets information from some of us out here in the blog world as well, with his email address on my short list. (I’m also a mobile-review forum member) I can say he isn’t always correct, however, and I trust my source and the two insiders more than him in this rare case.

This phone is crap. 12.1 megapixels and no real flash? Theres no point in getting 12.1 megapixels if theres not a true flash…what the hell is so hard about developing a phone that has a flash?! I wouldnt mind the extra bulk of a seperate battery to power the flash either….

lolol its funny how everyone is trying to analyze the phone by every little detail when all they needed to do was look at the other pictures in the flickr and read the the caption that confirms its a fake.

12.1 MP means nothing, it’s still been cramped into a tiny CCD censor that would just make super blury and grainy pix. CCD sensor’s size is the key element in picture quality. megapixel is just marketing stuff. Yet so many people fall for that.

    @ li,

They said the same thing about the move from 3.2 to 5, and now we have 8 megapixel models with improved video and image quality. Let’s see if you’re right.

    Hello,

I am marcelo, owner of the flickr account and that’s my father “fake” nokia. I just uploaded a couple more photos so you can check how bad the thing is.

The real deal is that: this are the fakes that are not talked about, because they are really, really illegal ones (Nokla and others try to use slightly different names and appears in websites) these are fake illegals using the SAME name. The picture was because of this, the first fake I saw with the Nokia name.

Also, I am UX designer and I was amazed how my father, being a nokia user for such a long time was not able to recognize. Somebody sold to him on the street market, he tought “great deal by the buck!! And it’s nokia! with 2 chips + tv” he really thought it was a Nokia.

For a UX designer I was really disappointed. why? The UI being really crap, with serious portuguese language mistakes, was not enough for him to figure out it was a fake phone. Ok he is not the average user, his is not a technology guy and the phone is really for calling and work matters. But come on!

Anyhow, the pictures shows clearly what the thing really is and I uploaded a video!
