Man uses ‘Find My iPhone’ to locate his iPhone… and three robbery suspects

It’s the moment every iPhone owner dreads — but secretly dreams about. You’re walking in a dark alley (or near the intersection of Amberson Avenue and Amberson Place in Shadyside, in this case) and three men approach, one brandishing a gun. They demand your wallet, credit card PINs and your precious iPhone. Scared for your life, you nervously comply and hand over your belongings. As the men leave and you run in the opposite direction and think to yourself, “Hell yeah, I finally get to use the ‘Find My iPhone’ feature in MobileMe!” Editorializing aside, this is reportedly what happened early this morning in Shadyside, PA. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, an unnamed victim was allegedly robbed around 1:00 am this morning and forced to hand over his wallet and iPhone. After fleeing the scene unharmed, the man contacted the police and his banks before going home and using Apple’s ‘Find My iPhone’ feature to locate his iPhone at a local Walmart. The man coordinated with police and three suspects were eventually detained at a nearby gas station. Police recovered a black pellet gun, stolen identification, credit cards and cash, though the report does not indicate whether or not the stolen iPhone was recovered. Moral of the story: don’t steal a guy’s iPhone (but if you do, turn it off).

Thanks, Antonio!

    Bunch of tools…why does anyone these days steal credit cards or phones? You can typically kill your phone and in this case locate it and credit cards can be deactivated within minutes. Bunch of bright guys right there…..*rolls eyes*

    Wow, what exactly are you advocating??
    Responsible journalism,would draw the line,at teaching criminals how to get away!
    One should expect more by the BGR editor, should be far more responsible about it’s sense of duty!
    Furthermore,if this was meant to be a joke,it is clearly in poor taste, otherwise it is borderline criminal negligence!
    Please,in the future reconsider dicy posts.

    Thank you

    @ merideth

    ..maybe ur silly ass should’ve just sold ur house…or picked a better neighborhood from the get go! U seem like a closet racist from ur welfare comment. U probably aren’t even a gadget head…jus some unwanted ugly white broad looking for an outlet to spew ur hate.

    On another note I’m glad these dudes got caught. I had my 3gs stolen in Aruba last week but I had my data roaming off, so I could not locate my iPhone. Nice to hear it works for some but it can use improvements.

    I think you really need to rethink your comment. First of all, if it’s that easy for a welfare person to get into your neighborhood and, you can afford a nice home before prices were lowered you probably should have moved.

    Second of all, did you see who stole your stuff? The whole welfare, moms can’t buy them cars, and thugs carry iPhones now. That was really unnecessary.

    I’m glad they caught these guys. I can’t stand a thief. I layed mine down accidently in a store helping my daughter and forgot it. A group of guys white and black were the last ones there. Thieves and killers don’t necessarily have a profile. How about our kids being targeted in schools? What’s the profile there? Or even a better one. What’s the stereotype of the majority of shoplifters?

    Doesn’t feel good now does it? Make you angry?
    Let’s try to do what God would want us to do daily. First commandment, Love your neighbor! You don’t have to like their ways but, love them. The world would be a better place. And stop using the internet as a trash dump. A place to get release all your ails.

    @Daniel P,
    Make improvements to what? If you have data roaming off you have data roaming off. I am pretty sure that if they made it so roaming is enabled to find your phone, people would sue apple for the roaming charges. This is bad for apple to do. If you are going over seas and find you may need data, turn roaming on at your own risk.

    @p,

    Ummm your an idiot. There was already a story about an iPhone being walked away by someone and caught using MobileMe. It was the first case of this happening … And it was stolen by a white guy.

    Is there a dictionary definition and picture of what a thug looks like?

    Without it, the comments of Meredith and those that agree can easily be taken as offensive or reacist.

    my: there actually is a definition of thug in the dictionary, it’s an old english term. Also if one wants a definition of thug, you could always ask the guys that sport clothing and jewelery with thug written on it, or just listen to thug life, I think that was by tupac. See his life for a definition of thug life…

    That’s crazy – when my iPhone got stolen it wasn’t so dramatic, more out of personal silliness.
    I discovered this web site to report stolen iPhone:

    http://www.stolen-property.com/report-stolen-iPhone.php

    It’s a web site internationally report stolen property, hopefully it brings my precious home to me.
