Qualcomm reportedly preparing portable FLO TV device
File this one under “huh?” According to a report from gdgt this morning, Qualcomm is readying a portable tablet-like dedicated FLO TV device that will provide users with TV on the go. Dubbed a Portable Television, or PTV, Qualcomm’s upcoming device is said to resemble the sketch above and is thought to be about the size of an iPhone. Reported specs include a capacitive touchscreen, 4GB of memory, stereo speakers and battery life to the tune of 300 hours of standby, 5 hours of TV and 15 hours of music. We’re not sure exactly who the device will be marketed toward or what hole it fills that is big enough to warrant a dedicated device, but all will be revealed soon — or at least by early next near at CES. Is anyone into the idea of a dedicated PTV or is convergence still the name of the game?
They said they are also working on app for iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. So there is the convergence you speak of.

I, for one, am hoping for a stand-alone device. Most convergence devices do many things half-arsed. I’m sick of devices that do several things to the degree that they’re almost useful, but not quite. Typically those are the pieces of, ahem, equipment that fail when I actually need them to work. Potential utility doesn’t count for much if it doesn’t work all the time.
This is probably going to require wifi. Why would I need this when I have Sling Player on my Fuze via 3G/wifi?
So I have my Pre for calls, texting and email, my iTouch for music, my 3g netbook and now I need this? ugh..
With Slingbox and Hava, and apps like PiipTV for S60, exactly why would anyone want MediaFLO kit unless it came with free service? I don’t usually do this, and hate others that do, but I give this one a fat fat…
EPIC FAIL!! MediaFLO is supposed to be dead. Someone shoot it again.
Does MediaFLO have ANY uptake at this point? Why would anyone care about the crappy little selection of channels in low resolution? And won’t ATSC-M/H eventually come to dominate this shrinking market segment?

Yes, which means they are satisfied with the performance, do you hope everything HTC does results in failure from here on out. They could use another processor.
