Sony to launch S and E Series Walkmans in September
With the Zune HD on the horizon and a refreshed iPod touch looming, some might say it’s hard to even think about getting amped for Sony’s upcoming S Series and E Series Walkmans. Others however, might say these sleek and inexpensive players are just what the doctor ordered. Sony announced this morning that it would be bringing two new Walkman lines to market next month — the well-leaked S Series and the not-so-well-leaked E Series. Starting with the S Series, we’re looking at a 2.4-inch QVGA display, FM tuner with recording capability, built-in stereo speakers and up to 42 hours of audio/6.4 hours of video playback on a single charge (17 hours audio/5 hours video using the stereo speakers). The cheaper E Series is a much more basic player with a 2-inch display and none of the bells and whistles found on the S. Pricing is where things get interesting: The S Series will run $110 for the 8GB model and $130 for the 16GB model while the E Series will be $80 for 8GB and $100 for 16GB. Not bad at all.

What kind of controlls do these devices have? touch, or standard Play/Prev/Next buttons?
if i didn’t have an iphone, i’d get a Zune or a Touch before one of these
What happened to the large capacity MP3/video player? Seems like Apple and MS are the only ones left making anything beyond 16GBs… and even then 32GBs is too small for me. And even then even then even they don’t seem to promote the large capacity players as much. (How many people forgot about the 120GB ipod classic?).
And why is it Sony can keep squeezing unnecessary amounts of HD space into a PS3, but can’t do it for their Walkman?
Ok. I’m being cheeky… I know why… because no one can compete w/ Apple and if you’re anti-Apple like some of us, you go to the Zune instead. Still, I would like to see more alternatives (and more HIGH capacity players in general!). Just seems like Creative, Sony, iRiver, et al just gave up and would rather produce cheap-o 8GB players. No reason to take risks I guess. Jasbroni’s know their roles.

If only the company had a decent marketing department in the USA, the brand would be alot stronger here in the states.
Umm dude wake up. There are tons of choices for mp3 players that don’t include Zune or Apple. Sansa, Iriver, Cowan, Phillips, Samsung, Rhapsody, Archos etc. All of which have very appealing alternatives to Ipods depending on personal needs and price..
Second off, no PMP player currently plays HD quality content. There’s no need for it on such tiny screens. It is also be a HUGE battery drain.
Third, Sony just released a high end large capacity touch based player (X Series). It’s received a lot of positive reviews. Sony’s real issue is lack of marketing, poor product naming, and bad pricing strategy.
And no your not being “cheeky” just ignorant.
