Qik adds 3G support, still lacks Qik support

In the ongoing drama that is the App Store approval process, Qik scored a half victory last night when its updated iPhone app gained approval. The new version supports video uploads via 3G whereas previous versions were only able to upload videos over Wi-Fi. We say half victory because the features paramount to Qik’s app/service combo — the ability to stream live video and see viewer comments pop up on your display — is still notably absent from Qik’s iPhone offering. In a word: garbage. As the FCC continues to crack down on Apple’s App Store shenanigans, we can only hope that the company eventually begins to allow apps like Qik and Sling Player to implement the core functionality that makes them great. That is, instead of crippling them to the point of near-uselessness where their intended functionality is concerned.

This provision was noted in Apple’s answers to the FCC inquiry into the App Store process. There is a obligation in the agreement between AT&T and Apple to not sell apps which could be used to receive TV signal. Even though most of the streams are of live people or events, Qik (and others) can be used to transmit TV signals. It’s a stupid agreement but it is a proper contract between AT&T and Apple. Whether or not the FCC jumps in and says that this is an unfair agreement to developers remains to be seen.

The FCC has no regulatory power over a private retail establishment, which the App store is. For example they couldn’t force Best Buy to carry, or approve for sale a product Best Buy doesn’t wish to sell, for any reason. Just because you want it doesn’t mean it should be happening.

Grow up Zach. Do you have any idea what having widespread use of these apps would do to AT&T’s already strained network? I mean, get real. Companies are allowed to reject apps like this if they would cause material harm to their infrastructure, which this very likely would.

Yeah, AT&T’s network would be harmed substantially! That’s why AT&T I mean Apple rejects these applications. Because if anyone knows how volatile AT&T’s network is it’s the Apple employees.

i was qikin’ the F-2 tornado that ripped through just north of toronto up here in canada on the 20th. I was trying to catch up to it while my phone was mounted on my dash looking out the front window and streaming onto qik. i think i had like 40 people on at once or something. i got so close that debris, and i mean bid debris like garbage cans and massive tree branches were flying around me so i got worried that something might hit my car but, i was fairly deep inside the storm before i decided to back off a bit. it was nuts. i’ve never chased a tornado and now i want more lol.

The key point is that the FCC is on to CrApple’s case and their incredibly restrictive ways of doing businesss. Only good can come from this.

If Qik strains the at&t network then at&t need to do something abut their network, not restict applications. If that happens we will soon be back to making buggy whips.

I used Qik on my N95 8gb and it was terrible streaming on AT&T’s 3g network to begin with. Now, its worse with more folks on their Iphones. I will download this app for my Iphone3gs though. But Qik’s main feature is live streaming, having to find and use Wifi defeats the purpose.

Simple solution to this issue. Jailbreak your iPhone, then go to Cydia and download an app called 3G Unrestrictor. It allows you to use apps that traditionally are only Wi-Fi only and use them with your 3G or even EDGE data connection. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and it works like a charm.

HELLO! You shouldn’t have to jailbreak your phone to be able to use all of its features, especially on the single most revolutionary mobile device ever created. “There is an app for that, but it hasn’t been approved yet or would freak out AT&T. Oh, but if ‘that’ is making fart sounds or tweeting, then yeah, there is an app for that.”

    Just the Facts says:

its called capitalism folks. Apple can approve or reject any app they want. Why? Because its THEIR COMPANY, not yours. I love how the FCC, a gov agency, is once again trying to prove it does something by telling a company what to sell. Don’t like Apple rejecting stuff? Start your own company.

I’m waiting for StevenGlansburg to come in and let us know why this is really the best thing that can happen. After all, Apple can do no wrong, am I right?

jailbreak, cydia, download qik from there. then, stream to your hearts content. My streams come out amazing, unlike on my old tilt which looked like was taking a pic every 3 seconds.

Problem i run into is that streaming using qik on the iphone stops sometimes around 10-15 minutes in b/c the camera goes to standby. I think i figured it out though. Don’t seem to have the issue when i turn off my push mail and im notifications.

As for the whole “if you don’t like it start your own company.” I just say this, “nah, i’ll let the fcc save me the effort.”

ATT’s network is not strained. They are maximizing their profits by minimizing consumer surplus. This is what monopolies and oligopolies do. If you don’t understand economics, don’t start trying to make arguments from economics.

There is a reason we average 8mb internet speeds while france gets average of 20 or more. Its not b/c our population is so huge or that U.S. is bigger, its b/c france has public healthcare. I’ll let you fill in all the missing premises to make that conclusion true. Needless to say, at least one premise has to do with people rambling about the FCC this, big govt. that, and let the “free market” and “private” industry work it out.

there’s no such thing as a free market and private industry does not foster efficiency precisely b/c there is no such thing as a free market. Just ask my pet unicorn, she’ll tell ya!
