Sony’s PS3 Slim gets official
Sony just took the wraps off its new PS3 Slim at Gamescom in Cologne and apart from the fact that it looks more like a Seagate external hard drive than a cutting edge gaming console, we have to say that we’re really digging the looks of the PS3 Slim. Other than a 120GB drive and new frame which takes up 32% less space, the other advantage the PS3 Slim has is that it sucks down 34% less power. Of course, the price is pretty much all anyone who is eyeing a PlayStation cares about and it’s going to run you $299.99. Come the first week of September, it will be possible for most Americans to buy the latest PlayStation without taking out a second (or third or fourth) mortgage.
I was holding out for a thinner and less costly ps3. This thing is f$$$ing mine,sweeet.

Looks a bit cheap from the top view, no piano black finish look. Any chance of more pictures of the side/back? I wonder if it plays PS2/PS1 games or if they added the memory card slot again or kept it out or the USB ports.

maybe i should of waited another year and a half. now now i’m stuck with a chunkier ps3 that uses more energy than ten refrigerators.
it obviously still plays blu-rays, otherwise it wouldn’t be able to play PS3 games.
Anyway this deal is so good it’s stupid. Blu-ray player, free wifi built in, free online gaming, no batteries, slim model, great library of games.
So the new slim one is 299 with a 120gb HD – yet the old one is 299 with an 80gb hard drive…

This jackass at gamestop just tried to con me into dropping 400 bucks on an 80GB…just now, like 20 minutes ago. I tried to explain that Sony JUST announced this and I’m going to wait, and he went on to tell me that it was fake and all a hoax….even though Sony just officially announced it, what a tool.

Ahh finally the PS3 Slim. After checking out my friends gigantic PS3 I decided to hold off and get the Slim. I figured they would release it eventually. Woot!
so is it still equipped with blue ray?
It has to still be equipped with bluray since that’s the format all PS3 games come one.

I need to know more specs before I trade in my 40GB for this one. Backwards compatible? Faster? 120GB just sounds plain obnoxious.
They could’ve made it 60GB and sold it for $249 and really put the screws to Xbox.

It is not backwards compatible. It does still play blu-ray, and it does have Wifi. Also, the price drop is on all current PS3 models until stock runs out. I’m just waiting to see a pic of the brick that attaches to the power supply ala the 360.
Also, keep in mind that the HDD in the PS3 is user removable. As long as yuou use a 2.5 SATA, you can throw what ever capacity drive you want in it. I think IMO, that this will help close the gap between the 360 and the PS3 and finally bring more quality titles to the system.

That is why I can’t stand gamestop. I went in to pre-order the first Assassin’s Creed Collector’s edition for the PS3 and when I went in to pick it up, the jackass put it in for the 360. That place is full of fanboys who spread FUD about Sony and do nothing but praise the 360. Not to mention they screw you on trade-in’s.

Exactly, gamestop is a pathetic excuse for a company. The guy I talked to was a manager nonetheless. It’s really something else when customers know more about games and upcoming technology than the staff does.
If anyone is curious, there is one thing lost in the new PS3 slim that’s been confirmed: Multiple OS support.
They took that feature out, which isn’t really that big of a deal (for me anyways).
Backwards compatibility is iffy right now, but I would lean towards the idea that B/C would be a firmware update in OS 3.1
I don’t think B/C is going to be supported out of the box–the very slim, lightweight box.

1. gamestop: WTF you people complaining about? Are you kidding me? Gamestop employees are just a bunch of jerkoffs who thought it would be cool to run the register at a video game store. Outside of Madden and Rock Band, you expect them to know something? Yeah, maybe back in 1999, not 2009. Man you people set your expectations way too high. Yeah, and the Genius Bar actually helps people and Taco Bell tacos use Angus meat…. suuuuuuuure.
2. Ok… well, I’m still not paying $300 for a PS3. If I was willing to pay (hey, notice I said WILLING) $300 for a PS3, I’d own a PS3 right now. However, this is making me think the old $299 PS3 may at least go down to $250? I would hope for $199, but I doubt it because Sony won’t do it.
I don’t know, my ONLY motivating factor to get a PS3 is the built in Blu Ray. There isn’t a game on the PS3 I really care about to be honest. Not trying to a fanboy, I know the PS3 is a good system, just not attractive to me.
Sony should eliminate the 80GB altogether. Make a 40GB for $199 while the slim is $299 and leave it at that. I’m telling you, if they ever can drop it to $199, that’s it… you’ll see PS3 fly off the shelf.
Oh man, I was hoping for one that was fatter and cost more.
Does anyone else think this thing is really ugly? I mean the original PS3 was huge, but it looked kind of sexy with its glossy finish, chrome trim and touch sensitive buttons. The PS3 Slim looks like the innards of a PS3 were crammed into an old PS2. I really do appreciate the cuts in power consumption and price, however, the lack of polish on the design really shows. For a company that really prides itself on design, this is pretty sad.
