T-Mobile G1 on a starch and sugar-free diet?
This is pretty interesting even if it doesn’t apply to you (you’re not a T-Mobile G1 owner): apparently since the T-Mobile’s G1 internal flash memory is so puny, any OS updates after Cupcake (1.5) simply won’t fit. That means besides for some possible security updates, little fixes here and there, the T-Mobile G1 is a wrap as far as new software from an operating system perspective is concerned.
What’s even more interesting is how Google-branded HTC devices differ in memory compared to straight HTC Android smartphones. Besides any licensing restrictions as far as the Google name is concerned, the reason why HTC’s Sense UI won’t be coming to Google devices is that the built in RAM is much lower than HTC phones. Anyone willing to bet that the HTC Dream will be upgradable beyond Android 1.5 and Google devices again get the short end of the stick?
Just a theory, though…

I was an early adopter of the G1 also, I like Android very much so I bit the bullet and just got a myTouch 3g from T-mo – yeah extended my contract – paying the $399 but my experience so far with the myTouch has been very favorable. It’s nice having Android on some hardware that is a little more pumped up from the G1 and i like the size of the myTouch as well..
I deal with the lil quirks with Android but overall I’m impressed with what has come in such a short amount of time. I guess when I can get good deal on a straight HTC Android device I may go that way.
I think T-Mobile said that they will try and make G1 specific updates….I think. “Quote from Engadget: Update: We’ve received a statement directly from T-Mobile on the matter, saying “We plan to continue working with Google to introduce future software updates to the T-Mobile G1. Reports to the contrary are inaccurate.” It’s unclear whether those are just going to be security and stability updates to 1.5 or whether we’ll see wholesale new versions like Donut and beyond, but for the sake of G1 owners everywhere, we’re hoping it’s the latter.” so yeah….
So I just wanted to let everyone know.. that this article is kinda BS.. I run Drizzy HERO on my g1 which is far more intense than cupcake or donut would be and it runs pretty smooth(4pages of widgets) I think that anyone who posts this or buys into this article is biased against T-Mobile and Google Branded android phones and this is there way to deter people .. LAME ATTEMPT!
It is a little silly that my 2 year old first gen iPhone has the latest software update and will probably be capable of updating to the latest firmware for the next year and the G1 (which is less then a year old) won’t see any more substantial software updates. These handset manufacturers are killing Android.
i have a number of friends who were early adopters…seemed cool at first, but a combination of things…crap battery, very buggy os (although i’ve not donutted much)slow, and of course the biggest issue of all, the abyssmal coverage of tmo. Oh yea, can’t ignore poor reliability either. Of the five people I know who got them, one went through three before punting it, and three others got fed up with pokiness and the horrible network. one (my brother) still has it, but he locked himself into a family plan…and in a major burb of dallas he has no service inside his house, you can see the family out in the yard or on the porch talking on their phones.
I’ll take vzw and winmo anyday.
Lame Eric. Paying more for mobile voice or data services does not make you richer or smarter. Some of the richest people on earth are very frugal with their money.
Not sure why you have to resort to stereotyping? I’m no Bill Gates, but I do very well for myself and use T-Mobile because they work well where I need them to at a price that sits well with me. I call that smart.
I have Verizon for work and although great it’s not $40 per month more “great,” for my needs.
Is this a comment bashing station on tmobiles service.. who has never or will never claim like every other provider that there service covers everywhere when in actuality the same experience your brother has in dallas im sure 1000 people experience similar situations in other areas with other providers.. simple fact coverage is and has never been absolute at least in my wireless lifetime… be it as it may tmobile coverage is by no means in comparison to VZW but this is a conversation about a phone and user interface… Sry to rant but people need to understand that palm OS @ first was pathetic.. windows mobile in many ways still is .. blackberry is the worst browsing experience ive ever had and underperforming features. Every operating system @ its birth is plagued the only way it gets better is by its adopters giving crucial feedback for devs to implement the changes needed to improve daily use.. essentials like work email .. maybe one day even a 3.5 mm headset jack could grace us(hardware) point being ive used a g1 since oct. 15th 08 and love my android as opposed to any of the other OS for my personal day to day use and impressed with its growth and look forward to more.. to each is own.. just my op
@Eric…
“That would make me 9. Why would a 9 year old have two phones?”
Bitch, you could have a home, a car, 3 jobs, 10 phones, and be on a boat with T-pain… you still act like a fucking 9 year old. Do yourself a favor and throw yourself down the stairs.
What a pretentious asshole.
I was a first person to buy this phone too.. and i have to say its crap…I so far the os has crashed 2 times starting my phone from factory resets.I dont even have it rooted. if it wasn’t for market “my backup” i would have lost everything. I guess it expected with first time around with android but i hope they do allow more fixes for the G1 because it DOES NEED THEM!
