Pantech Escapade world phone headed to Verizon; launching August 21st

It might not have a spot for microSD cards or even an EV-DO radio, but Pantech’s Verizon-bound Escapade is a special phone nonetheless. You see, the Escapade, which is all set to launch on August 21st, will be one of the few non-smartphones offered by Big Red that is capable of operating overseas on GSM networks. Without it, you’d pretty much have no choice but to get a loaner phone or pony up the big bugs for a smartphone. Spec wise, as we already alluded to, the Escapade is more like a blast from the past than anything new, but it does have a 2 megapixel shooter as well as GPS. So not only can you take some grainy snap shots while on vacation in Rome, but you can also navigate your way down its maze of winding roads and passages.

Plus it’s only going to be $30 vmir. Not bad for any basic flip, much less a world phone.

I see this as a smart move for VZW. Parent is sending their child overseas for a distant learning program but doesnt want to buy them a Storm or Tour. They pick this one up instead and save a few dollars. Important to have options available for consumers.

Please, continue on with the complaints about not enough TP2 coverage.

@ PandaBarr: Totally agreed about the child thing, but it doesn’t mean his father doesn’t want info on his TP2.

Who doesn’t have a phone lying around that they could use overseas? Why buy this crap when there are equivalents in your junk-drawer. Yawn!

If the parents got the cash to send their kid overseas for a learning program I doubt money is a very big issue for them.
