Microsoft announces Office 2008 Business Edition for Mac; introduces Outlook for Mac

Forget the fact that we’re in the second half of 2009 and Microsoft is still releasing new versions of software with “2008″ in the name because the day countless Mac users have been waiting for is finally here: say goodbye to Entourage and hello to Outlook. Soon, anyway. That’s right ladies and gents, Outlook for Mac will ship with the next generation of the Office suite, hopefully some time in early 2010. Entourage, you will not be missed. Actually, Entourage isn’t going away completely just yet — a “Web Services Edition” is available immediately, free for current Office 2008 users, and it will continue to be supported indefinitely. The interim version of Entourage will also be included in the newly announced Business Edition of Office 08, which will be available for pre-order starting August 18th and will launch on September 15th. Pricing will run $399.95 for a new copy of Business Edition, $239.95 for a Business Edition upgrade.

exactly how are they going to sell this on sept 15? Didnt a judge just order them to stop selling WORD in the US as part of a cortcase. Are they going to sell an office suite without a wordprocessor?

I’m pretty sure Outlook for mac is not gonna make it with Snow Leopard having native exchange support in Mail.app. 29$ to upgrade to Snow Leopard sounds way better than paying for Outlook.

I’m pretty sure outlook for Mac isn’t coming out until the new version of Office in “Holiday Season 2010″. The new repackage of 2008 in september will still have Entourage unfortunately. I hope I’m wrong, as Microsoft’s press release is vague.

The press release is a bit misleading but Outlook for Mac isn’t coming to Office until Office 2010 is released (which is on track for late 2010). What they’re announcing in this release is Entourage 2008 web services edition will ship with that new Office 2008 which is going to be released in September.

My guess is they’re pre-announcing Outlook for Mac so early as to ward off users from switching to the new Exchange-compatible Apple Mail and iCal which will ship in Snow Leopard.

Why does everyone hate on Outlook? It works fine.

    From the website:

“Outlook for Mac. Outlook for Mac is being built from the ground up as a Mac OS X application using Cocoa. ”

COCOA. YES. WIN. Microsoft’s writing a Cocoa Outlook. Everything I need.

Ummm, Entourage rocks. Intelligent conversation sorting, search that actually works, decent integration with Exchange, “You replied on 13/08/09. Show Reply”, etc. It’s way beyond what Outlook provides. You’d have to pry it out of my cold dead hands to make me switch to Outlook. Ugh!

Pretty sure that this isn’t quite right – the press release said that Office Business Edition is due out on Sept 15th, but Outlook will not be a part of that package. According to the presser, we’ll see Outlook in the next version of Office for Mac – probably sometime in 2010.

Screw outlook, Visio, Whats up with Visio…
I think thats what they need to add to a Business version of Office…
I personal am fine, with Entourage, and OSX Mail…
And with native support for exchange coming, I can careless about outlook at this point on the MAC.

WHAT IS MICROSOFT THINKING? Release a $400 product that does more or less the same thing as the FREE software that comes with a Mac? And they announce this now, when in a month or so, the new version of the Mac OS will have NATIVE Exchange support with those same FREE apps? This company has no idea what they are doing. One stupid thing after another. Being in my 30s, I saw the rise of Microsoft over my childhood and early adulthood, but I’ll see the demise for the rest of my life.

If I remember correctly, I used to use Outlook on the Mac back in around 1999. At some point, they replaced it with Entourage. Now Outlook is available again on the Mac? They all seem the same to me.

    iCrap Everything sucks.

Apple is a Joke in Business IT groups.

Apple may be good at games and music players.

    The iPhone Doesn’t multi Task.

Apple has had 30 years to come up with a Browser and Safari Sucks on every Level.

Apple needs Microsoft to put them in the Business arena because they have never been able to do it with their iProgrammer’s.

If you want to play with the big boys in the business arena then you need Microsoft to bail you out like they did in the 90’s.

If you ever get SQL on the Faggle and it can multi task (Snow Kitty) then come to the adult table, until then play with Nintendo and Sony in the game Market.

Basically, Microsoft sees the writing on the wall. Apple is adding exchange support to their own office apps and Microsoft finally decided to stop crippling MS Office for the Mac.

What cracks me up with the haters comments is that Word and Excel and Powerpoint all started on the Mac first. So shut up with the stupid old school IT guy talk. if a developer purposfully disables/short changes an application on a competing platform, of course it is going to be better on their own OS.

office can have complete parity on multiple platforms. It all up to Microsoft to write a good app and not bloatware.
