Google Voice offering active serviceman and women instant invites

In an effort to help assist deployed servicemen and women in the United States Military, Google is allowing anyone with a .mil email address to sign up for a Google Voice invite and get pretty much instantaneous access. Google’s reasoning behind this (a pretty good one, though you couldn’t buy PR this good) is that when deployed, it’s incredibly difficult to stay in touch with family and loves ones. Timezone differences, different schedules, and everything else make it hard to communicate and Google’s looking to help change that. Here’s a quote from the Google post:
“For servicemen and women who are constantly on the move, having a single number and an easy way to retrieve messages from loved ones can be invaluable. To help our service members communicate with their loved ones and show our support to those serving our country, Google is launching a new program. Starting today, any active U.S. service member with a .mil email address can sign up for a Google Voice account at www.google.com/militaryinvite and start using the free service within a day.”

Nice.
For a second I thought you guys meant servicemen and any female.
Props to Google for doing this.
Thanks BG for the update; and thanks to Google for thinking of us.

Brazo Zulu to Google!
It’s nice to see Big Corporations value the
US Military!
Go Navy! Full Speed Ahead!
Hells yeah! I already had my invite, but glad to know that if I hadn’t, I could have done it this way! Thanks, Google
How interesting, as Google was one of the biggest Obama donors and who’s known to be anti-military, (he doesn’t say it, but in the military, everyone knows it)
Keep it up Google, Oh! By the way, when are we regular people going to get some kinda invite?
phht. anyone really believe a company headquartered in an area just known for their love of the military really gives a shit about troops.
please.
Last year google got some bad press for not changing the logo on military holidays.

Oorah! Thanks Google.
Thank you for your service
@Nebech Dig
Anti-war and Anti-military are two different things.
I love how top military leaders escape blame for blowing money on stupid projects. Yet anyone that says we need to cut military spending must be an a-hole.
Sorry about going Waaaaaay of topic but I couldn’t help myself.
Instant invite is cool and all but Google Voice still says its unavailable overseas. I’ve tried from my location to activate it.
Thats gotta make AT&T and Apple fool like real assholes.
My buddy in Iraq has to use Skype currently, hopefully this will be effective and present him with another option.
Google Voice looks like a neat program. I use Skype from my location too. I’ve tried to activate my google voice from my deployed location but it says you have to be in the US to use. Not really that useful for us out here like that.
@Nebech Dig
You say “in the military, everyone knows it.” Try this math:
All Other Servicemembers – 1 (me)…
I like my Commander in Chief, and guess what, I am not the only one. I respect your opinion sir/ma’am, but do not think for a second that it applies to all of US serving. ‘All’ is a big word.
But…
To each their own. That very same Constitutional right, the very same Constitution I have swore to protect and defend, lets you express your opinion… so go ahead. I, for one, am thankful there is yet another way for me and my friends to hear the voices of our loved ones while in harm’s way. Whether we agree or not, it is for them whom we fight. Thanks Google.
Good for Google. Nice work.
Thank you AndGuz and thank you for being a true patriot.
It is nice to see the servicemen and women come out on BGR. I am all Blue! I was 14th Services Div at CAFB and my wife is SRA in Savannah!! Now where is my MilDis at fast food places! Tired of hearing “sorry sir, you must be in uniform to get a discount” at Chic Fil A!!! Geez!
Say Boats, bitches!!
… And today’s Sailor of the Day is Google. Stand by for words from the Ships Chaplain. Taps Taps. Lights out maintain silence about the decks. .
Wonder how I can get Google to extend the invite to Aussie, Canadian and British servicemen and servicewomen. WE are deployed to the same shitholes as the US.
Cmon Google. Any chance.

I see how this would be useful for traditional ‘military’ families moving around the us. But like people have said it can’t be activated internationally nor forward to international numbers as of today. (I imagine 1 day…for a price). So for now not too useful for deployed troops. Also does not yet have international numbers so European or Australians if they could activate would get US numbers their friends and family would have to call @ possibly high rates.
For those of you who are possibly misunderstanding why google is giving military priority. Here’s a thought. It could be so when a service member is overseas/deployed and they call their loved ones (who will have the google voice service) the call will get forward to the appropiate phone. So that those soldiers always hear the voice they seek on the other end. That is important for some.
Also instead of making digs at google. Let’s just say thank you for thinking of our service members here & now instead of “hating on them”.
Lastly everyone is quick to criticize our commander in chief regardless of whose in office ask yourself this (and be honest) Could you really do better with the deck of cards they have been handed?
Thanks you google and Thank you to all those troops who protect the very freedom I am allowed to post on this blog.
im former usaf. i got injured downranged. the af gave me an honorable discharge before they could give me a med dishcharge (that would be the equivalent of a severance package in my case getting hit by a f#king mortar bomb and then having to do all the VA paper work myself. Now, finally the VA has me as a 100% disabled veteran. I got a DOD Base Access card, but no .mil address. What about disabled vets like myself and all of my injured brothers and sisters. We do A LOT of coordination between here(the US), Iraq, Afghanistan, helping vets that the “system” helped fall through the cracks and get our vets into programs with the VA and other organizations. I don’t get paid for any of this, I don’t want to. It’s my duty to all my brothers and sisters in arms. I wonder is there any options for people like myself.
