Verizon drops pricing on almost all existing smartphones to under $99

Well, hear us out. We’ve had a flurry of tips sent in today that Verizon Wireless has dropped the prices of almost all existing smartphones they offer to only $99 with a two-year agreement. This obviously signifies one thing and it’s not Verizon just being nice (though they generally are friendly when we ring them up): new crap is coming. The much-awaited Touch Pro2 looks to be landing on VZ shortly (the Touch Pro dropped from $419 to $99) and while we doubt the BlackBerry Storm 2 is going to launch earlier than November, there’s still only two smartphones we can find above $99. Those are the BlackBerry Tour and Samsung Saga. So, new handsets coming relatively soon and obviously a little reaction to the $99 iPhone pricing, existing smartphones and BlackBerrys on Verizon Wireless just got a whole bunch less expensive.

Thanks, to everyone that hit us up!

Sounds to me like the iPhone is putting a big hurt on Verizon and thus they must discount all their mediocre phones in order to compete.

@ me: Forgot about that, but it still doesn’t take away from the fact that jonathan h didn’t know that the XV6800 was a smartphone.

I feel dumber for having read many posts here. Some people need some foil beanies while mom and dad kick them off their plan until they are old enough to have their own plans, pay their own bills, and get a serious cluepon.

The touch pro2 is going to be everything that the touch pro wasn’t, and I can’t wait. I went from the 6800 to the 6900 and regretted it every day there-after. Then the touch pro was coming, and I got excited. Then I saw the specs and features and was disappointed, so I stayed with the 6900 instead of shelling out yet again for something I didn’t want. The TP2 is going to slaughter.

VZW vs Sprint vs Others: VZW has the business apps and wireless syncing I need. It is software that runs only on windows mobile phones. Sprint did away with theirs 2 years ago, so they aren’t a solution. Other carriers I’m not sure ever had this. And blackberry just isn’t good, lacks the current/modern features that WM5 even had. I want a desktop away from my desktop, and that’s what I get with my WM phones. I get my email, syncing, contacts, calander, all fully syncing with outlook in a friendly and familiar interface. Kind of how windows beat apple years ago? It’s what I use at work, so I’m not going to learn something new at home, I’m going to use what I use the majority of the time.

Yes they dropped the prices on their phones but did you check out what they did to their plan pricing? They divided up the plans and the data/texting portions are super expensive now. I’ve been waiting to purchase an Omnia 2 but when I saw the price drop I almost snagged an Omnia. During the check-out & plan selection process I realized what was up. They totally jacked up the plan pricing for data and stuff. I backed out on that one.

Felt like Disneyland. They hide the long lines for the rides inside buildings so that you don’t get bummed out until you’re trapped.

@ Jonah: Can’t imagine where you’re looking, but their voice/e-mail plans are the same price they’ve been for a while now. The difference is the fact that you no longer select a txt/pix allotment, it’s unlimited, but still the same price as before.

In fact, my bill would go down by $5 compared to what I’m currently paying for my 2 year old plan.

@vzw “Sprint customers can’t roam on Verizon’s network.” –LMAO!

As someone who helped link the CDMA networks and data/voice roaming agreements together I ASSURE you that VZW and Sprint customers CAN/DO roam on each other’s networks. Assuming of course you’re smart enough to read your manual and know how to enable your phone to communicate on something other than “Home network only.”

My contract ran up during the middle of July. At that time I checked out the Omnia and the plan and features that I chose would have cost me I think $99. That’s $20 more than I’m paying now (with a silly little flip phone) so I was hesitant to proceed. Then I found out that the Omnia 2 is coming out soon (any word on this?). Out of curiousity (and the fact that my stupid Krzr phone is junk) I checked back yesterday and saw that I could get the omnia for free.

Totally stocked I went through the check-out process and getting the same plan that I priced out in mid-July now costs $120. That’s quite a jump and too rich for me at the moment.

The base plans are the same price. But they’ve subdivided some of the perks so that to get the same options costs way more now.

    aren’t you missing the obvious?
They’re giving away razors in order to sell razor blades.
They want to encourage folks to trade in their old standard phones,
and pay the $30 or $40 extra per month that verizon charges just
to own one of these phones. This phone will cost you an extra grand (at least) over the two year commitment (whether you use it or not).

Verizon Wireless’ data package is the same as most of the other carriers at $29.99 for unlimited internet and emailing. The price plans are usually a little higher due to the fact that Verizon Wireless’ has more coverage in more areas, especially with its EVDO coverage (fast internet speed coverage).

I suspect that Verizon Wireless’ is coming out with a ton of new phones like the Palm Pre, Omnia II, Storm II, Motorola Sholes and possibly others around October. They are trying to blow through their inventory of the phones they have that no one will buy once a new version or amazingly better (SHOLES!) phone comes out.

    GOBBLE IT UP!

ps. If you live in a major city and never get out much almost any of the carriers are going to provide you with decent service. It’s when you step outside of the highly covered denser cities that you find the value in a more extensively built network.

This whole disscussion is rediculious. Someone said that verizons expensive, uh sure look at the AT&T Plan for IPHONE.That shits expensive. I pay $68 for 450 min free nights and weekends unlimited text/pics, if people want email and shit like that buy a IPOD TOUCH Off ebay (used). I have a phone + the touch this equals LESS MONEY Spent. Who cares that you dont get internet every where on the touch, but theres alot of people who have wireless. I know your prob like A cell phone and a Ipod touch just for that dumb shit, ebay you can spend as little as $100 on one, my 16g ipod touch was 175.so now I have email, aim, myspace, facebook, and other apps FOR FREE. But all you are bascally bitching over cell phone plans. Alot of people who are downing verizon you know shit about it. Honestly the service is GREAT I have NEVER not had service. AT&T, and sprint, when people have those services and come to my house there outside trying to find service, i see people with those services ALL THE TIME, With there arms in the air with there phone trying to find service. sorry but VERIZON HANDS DOWN IS THE BEST SERVICE, and for verizon and apple talking about an iphone for verizon is just going to make it an even better carrier. Also the reason why verizon dropped their prices is because THEY ALWAYS DO IT, it helps people out who dont have that much money so they can UPGRADE to a better phone if you think about it. AT&T Has NOTHING ON VERIZON Except the iphone which I WONT be buying because Either way your being ripped off on a phone that ALOT of people have because there “cool” and love to follow others. Its boring and pathetic. Thats all I have to say.
