Jailbreak and unlock iPhone OS 3.0.1 today

Those of you who abstained from updating your iPhones to OS 3.0.1 for the sake of keeping your device jailbroken and/or unlocked will be pleased to know you apparently have nothing to worry about. The iPhone Dev Team is reporting that the same versions of redsn0w and ultrasn0w that worked for OS 3.0 are fully compatible with the new software, albeit with the aid of a little more trickery than usual. To jailbreak, all you need to do is install the 3.0.1 software, fire up redsn0w, select the IPSW file for OS 3.0 (you still have that on your computer, don’t you?) and sit back while the magic happens. To take it one step further and soft unlock, just grab ultrasn0w through Cydia and you’ll be on your merry way. In case you’re wondering how this works, it all has to do with the fact that 3.0.1 is essentially a carbon copy of 3.0 with the only real difference being the code that patches up that nasty SMS exploit.

    Well I just tried and my new iphone 3gs 16gb battery life was cut, didn’t get signal and just shut down when restart just froze. restore the iphone to original setting on itunes after several hours. So jailbreak to unlock not recommeded just waiting for something better maybe just the “unlock”

    Steve says:

    @gil Franco,

    It’s not possible. You install 3.0.1 and then you have to jailbreak again using redsn0w and the 3.0 firmware. Search google for instructions on how to jailbreak 3.0.1 and you’ll find a step by step tutorial.

    When the time comes, I may need to unlock the phone if I go out of the country. I am not interested in Jailbreaking, I just need it unlocked. Is this possible? How hard is it?

    Hey all,

    I recently got a unlocked iphone to use with my T-mobile account. It is a 8GB 3g with 3.0 OS..I accidently updated the software to 3.0.1 and now my phone will not read my sim. I am new to using the iphone and i am stuck now and feel like i wasted my phone for nohting.

    How can i go back to the old 3.0 software and unlock the phone to use with my t-mobile account? I would greatly appriciate any help. Thanks so much
