BlackBerry App World 1.1.0.11 now available

So close and yet so far… RIM has turned BlackBerry App World version 1.1.0.11 loose on BlackBerry faithful and with it comes a few notable improvements — but none quite as notable as its shortcomings. Rumors had been tossed around earlier this week suggesting App World 1.1.1.0.11 would allow users to download apps and install them to memory cards as opposed to internal memory. Considering how anemic most BlackBerry devices are when it comes to device memory, the move would have been a huge one on RIM’s part. Yeah, not so much. The actual feature new to 1.1.0.11 is simply the ability to archive an app. These archives can be stored internally or on a memory card so that, in the event the user wishes to reinstall an app again, he or she can do so quickly and easily. Great. Other new features include a bunch of bug fixes, faster icon loading, available memory display and a separation between top free and top paid apps.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

RIM really dropped the ball on the app install part. Their website made it sound like you could save it to a memory card instead of the device memory and instead it’s just an archive. Pretty weak. Oh welll, I guess Aerize Card Loader is still king for freeing up BlackBerry app memory.

I just downloaded it to my verizon curve ota and now every time I open appworld I get an error that says it can’t connect to the appworld servers. All of my other apps are able to access the web. Anyone else having this problem?

Hmm, I’m trying to register my new Tour and it looks like there’s a blackberry outage going on (which is a huge pain since now I’m phoneless). That might be why ray can’t access the Appworld?

I really wish they would design blackberries to extend the system memory onto the media card ala windows readyboost and nokia maemo. I bet these things will boot up in seconds if that happened. I used that option on my Nokia N800 all the time with a 2GB card and it really helped out.

This runs a LOT smoother…now maybe I won’t have to do a soft reset every time I go to app world.

I just upgraded and found that “My World” has “forgotten” about several apps that I paid for. I’m guess RIM just screwed me. Thanks RIM!

I’m not sure why people thought you’d be able to run apps from the memory card by upgrading App World…. It’s not App World that would allow that, it’s Blackberry’s crappy OS that prevents it… Until Blackberry releases an OS that supports running applications from a memory card, it’s going to be impossible… Don’t look for 3rd party software or even their own programs to fix that, it’s going to have to be an OS patch.

    Dear RIM/BlackBerry

Your shoddy attempt at a new version of your App World has left a very unpleasant taste in our mouths. Not only have majority of people been getting an error message that our phones can not connect to the BlackBerry App World Server, because BlackBerry Servers can not detect our phones signal be it Wifi or cellular…
But those who have been able to connect find that some of their paid programs are null and void from their transactions, leading them to re-buy the same applications.
How is this being resolved? Why hasnt RIM put out a press release? Why was this version even released if RIM couldnt back it up, and provide service for it?

    Seriously…WE WANT SOME ANSWERS!

Before I go and scream at my wireless provider for a problem I doubt is theirs, Id like to give you a piece of my mind and suggest that before you do something, TEST IT, then TEST IT AGAIN, and when you are done testing it, TEST IT AGAIN AND YET AGAIN AND YET AGAIN to ensure your subscribers/users/customers are not pissed off and head for an iPhone for a superior app store.

    Always,

    ROGER A

Why isn’t App World available in every country, even if it’s just to get the FREE apps?

I understand that the have to sort out the payment issue for each county/carrier, but in the Dominican Republic we have BB’s by TWO carriers and no App World even for free apps!!!

    Come on, RIM…
