Possible iPhone nano design and details revealed by Apple patent
Ok people, you know the drill. Standard disclaimer here: patents may give us some preliminary details about a future product but companies — especially Apple — will patent anything and everything so don’t be too surprised if much of this patent never materializes. The biggest takeaway is likely the simple fact that Apple is indeed working on an iPhone nano in some capacity, as we’ve expected for quite a while now. That said, a reported patent unearthed this morning may shed some light on Apple’s preliminary designs where the elusive iPhone nano is concerned. According to the details revealed in the patent, Apple may in fact be considering a device that puts a new spin on touch interfaces by moving the touch surface to the back of the device. The front of the handset would be comprised entirely of a display and the back would be a “force-sensitive touch based surface”. Sounds… Interesting. The concept of controls on the rear of a device is nothing new but it has yet to reach the market in any significant way because, well, it’s counter-intuitive. Unless this design manifests itself with a front-facing touchscreen as well (for typing, etc) the safe bet is on this iteration of the iPhone nano never leaving Apple’s lab. Hit the jump for more images.
Thanks, Jerome!

For what it’s worth, this is merely a patent application. Much different than a patent.
This patent app was discovered by AppleInsider two years ago.

MacNN didn’t do their research.
LOL, Nerdherder strikes again.

Hey Zach E, looks like Bob just busted you big time. Thats gotta hurt. I keep telling you to research your facts, yet you don’t. Maybe someday you will learn.
Wow, this information is 2 years old…
@nerdherder
LMFAO!!
Nerd, I f-ing hate the Iphone. I got a dumb phone(eternity) at the same price because i didnt like the Iphone.
Ok Bjones, I apologize for clumping you in with the iSheep.
You are wrong. Look at figure 3B and then figure 3A. The touch well is positioned from the right to the center. Therefore, this could possibly equate to a touch screen device with a click wheel, same as a touch screen keyboard.
That what the patent implies.
So is Apple trying to patent a touchscreen keyboard with 2 Vs and no letter D? Innovative.
This Is Intresting but not a good idea
Hopefully this idea won’t push through. Why don’t they just keep making the Iphone better with slight design changes more quality hardware and multi-tasking. Nano iphone is stupid, dialing, surfing with the clickwheel?
At least Apple will be making a Derrick Zoolander approved phone now!
@BJones,
I highly doubt that you didn’t want the iPhone. It was likely due to their monthly costs. Yet, I may be wrong.

With Apple selling the 3G for $99, how much will they sell an iphone nano for? Would it be free? How could they justify anything more than $49?
Just a thought
Not happening…
Why do you post years old information? #BGRFAIL
@Jj
Hey idiot, why do you even come to BGR if its a fail? Why don’t you get ur latest leaks and spies from other sites you dumb ass. You probably never even heard of that 2 year old patent until now and you’re making it seem like you’re more superior than BGR cuz you can read through comments? Just STFU AND LEAVE IF YOU DONT LIKE WHAT THEY PRODUCE!
~ My Two Cents
OMG THIS IS SO INNOVATIVE NO COUJLD HAVE EVER THOUGT OF THOIS
