AT&T to launch the Samsung Solstice A887 on August 2nd, $99.99

Surprise, AT&T-rocking budget touchscreen fans. One of our trusty ninjas just hit us with some Sammy juice and it looks like the affordable A887, formerly known as the Infinity, will be hitting stores nationwide this coming Sunday, August 2nd. The release name of the handset will be Solstice and it packs the following “key selling points”:

  • Full touch screen display and Widget bar keep your favorites close at hand.
  • Messaging made easy with full touch QWERTY keypad with vibration response to touch.
  • Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Camera with video capabilities to capture special moments as they happen.
  • Download your favorite songs, listen to streaming radio or cut your own ringtones with AT&T Music.
  • Integrated aGPS with AT&T Navigator for turn-by-turn voice and on-screen driving directions.
  • Mobile Email and Instant Messenger for quick and easy on the go.
  • Video Share capable to share video in real time.
  • Personalize with downloadable games, graphic, ringtones and applications.
  • Stereo Bluetooth-capable for a truly hands-free conversation and music experience.

Pricing comes in at $99.99 on a 2-year contract, $174.99 on a 1-year contract and $249.99 contract free. All prices include a $50 mail-in rebate. Sure it’s not the sharpest tool in the shed but for an affordable 3G feature phone, the Samsung Solstice doesn’t look half bad. Hit the jump for some barely legible specs.

When does a dumb phone become a feature phone become a smart phone?

Or perhaps more importantly, when does a smart phone become a feature phone become a dumb phone?

you probably can’t get gmail app on it. and mobile email probably doesn’t support gmail. so, $100.00 for a phone that can’t check email is a bit of an overkill, dontcha think at&t. stop messing with phones. let your customers get what they pay for……………….

Well its a very grey line from featurephone to smartphone. Because as I compare smartphone os’ the iphone seems like an instinct brew os, or a seems comparable to a touchwiz phone. The iphone doesn’t seem to have the tiny computer feel of a winmo or android os. The only thing that seems to win it smartphone status is the apps you can get for it. Which imo doesn’t make a smartphone a smartphone. I want a desktop that I can set up icons where I please, not a grid designed icon panel. Also I want true multitasking, not to exit the program I’m in just to see something else. I vote that until apple makes their iphone more smartphoney they get bumped down to featurephone status.

the impression will be better and i think samsung should actually update the bugs in their old phones instead of making new ones.. it’s like paying $150.00 plus dealing with the contract crap and etc etc for a upgrade..

That’s NOT cheap! The Eternity is like $40.00 or $50.00, so I don’t understnad how that’s NOT a bad price.

I like the Solstice, much better than my old phone, and I’ve had it for about a week and everything works fine. Found a gmail app, and even if you can’t find it you can always just go use the net that comes with the phone for 10$ a month
