UPDATED: Palm Pre now $99 at Best Buy

Likely because a) sufficient funds have been obtained from early adopters, and b) the dirt cheap $99 iPhone 3G is making it hard for people to switch to something new, Best Buy has lowered the price of the Palm Pre to $99.99 for those who purchase it on contract, a savings of $100. What’s more is that that pesky $100 mail-in rebate won’t have to be dealt with as Best Buy already has you covered where that’s concerned. But back to that $99.99 price tag. So far there is nothing to indicate that this new price-point is going to remain permanent, but for the sake of everyone involved we certainly hope that a $99.99 Pre is the new norm.

UPDATE: Best Buy’s John Bernier has Tweeted that the $99.99 Pre is an error and is “being corrected.” Anyone out there manage to get a Pre on the cheap?

Boy Genius Report is correct! I just left my local Best Buy after getting a $200 refund for the two Palm Pres I bought on Friday night. The price is the store show $99, but online it shows $199. Call your local BB and find out. My day has been made!!

Bestbuy as a company does not charge tax on the full price of the phones, but certain states (Louisiana and Navada) have state laws that require us to charge tax on 25% of the company’s cost for the phone. in Louisiana that is 9% tax on 25% of our cost. For example the LG VU is free for new activation or upgrade, but in my store you have to pay $3.24 in state sales tax on that “free” phone.

    “5th Said:
    it still says $199.99
that price tag is misspelled, look what it says under “instant savings no-mail-rebate”
    EPIC FAIL BOY GENIUS REPORT!!!!!”

    “Brad Said:
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, this was a pricing error that has already been fixed. New pricing tiles for phones print early Sunday morning, and someone in corporate apparantly typed the wrong price when creating the package price. By this time there shouldn’t be any store in the nation with the $99.99 price tags still out. For those of you who got one…… congrats you got a great deal!”

Brad, “5th,” you are morons. Best buy on Rt 22 NJ, has them in stock and for $99. All NJ stores have plenty of stock and all have them for $99

I stopped in the local Best Buy after work (Orlando) and they said the price was $99 but it was an error. I asked if they could reduce the price to $99 because that’s the reason I came in and they were told from the GM they couldn’t reduce the price. However, I was one of many to ask. I wonder if Sprint will eventually reduce the price of the Pre?

Lets be honest, selling Pre after Pre at the $99 price was a stroke of genius, regardless if it was an accident. It was the first day that Pre sales outsold the iPhone that we ever witnessed. In fact, once price was out of the picture, we actually began talking about 3G coverage, practical Apps available, and most importantly monthly price.

In fact, I was able to turn 4 potential iPhone 8GB 3G buyers into new Sprint Customers, with the Pre.

If only Sprint, or Best Buy Mobile, would look at profit from iPhone sales and profit from $99 Pre sales, they would see that the Pre sales would still make more money than the Jesus Phone.
