Verizon issues Q2 subscriber count; full results coming Tuesday
While we wait patiently for the 27th to see how the recession treated Big Red this past quarter, Verizon has issued its first little taste of Q2: 1.1 million net subscriber additions. The number is very respectable of course, though it falls short of the 1.4 million reeled in by AT&T over the same period of time. As of the end of Q2, Verizon Wireless is now home to a total of 87.7 million subscribers — 87.7 meeeeeeeeellion. 85.2 million of Verizon’s total subscriber base signed on directly with VZW as opposed to signing up through a reseller. So what have we learned? Verizon is most definitely still top dog where subscriber count is concerned, but whether or not the carrier managed to dig deep enough into the pockets of said customer base and pull out a solid Q2 will be a mystery for another few days.

@Scott,
You actually believe that rumor?
If that were the case my newly provisioned iphone would have mms. It doesnt
@ StevenGlansburg
Just “having” coverage is not good enough. In most areas Verizon EVDO Rev A is still faster than ATT 3G, and thats if you can get 3G because ATT 3G coverage is sorely lacking. Also try moving around your house, or a store or any building and having your bars bounce and drop your call. Thats great. Face it, ATT will never equal Verizon when it comes to the network footprint. They might, and I say might catch up in reliability many years down the road but it will be too late by then. If it were not for the iPhone ATT would be sinking and bleeding customers as bad as Sprint. You ATT fanbois need to pray iPhone doesnt hit Verizon next year or youre going to see quarterly sub results the exact opposite that ATT just reported.
@Ivan
Just a little history lesson for you:
At the begining of 4Q 2004 when the merger of Cingular and AT&T was final they had 46 million subscribers (yes, making them the nation’s largest wireless communications provider over verizon) and VZW followed in the number 2 spot with 42.1 million.
If you take a look at the latest numbers (Q2 of 09), you’ll see that AT&T has gained a total of 33.6 million subscribers and VZW has gained a total of 45.6 million over the same period of time.
Needless to say, go ahead, take away the 13 million VZW got from Alltel. Buuuut, if you do that you have to take away the 20 million Cingular got when they merged with AT&T.
That puts VZW with 74.7 million and AT&T/Cingular with 59.6 million subscribers.
It ends in one big game of who bought who.
@ anonymousTSR
Ok smart ass. If your so smart about our OS, take a look at the enV3, enV Touch, Dare, Versa, Moto Krave, Samsung Alias 2, Casio® EXILIM. All these are new phones that have a different OS.
All you iphone/at&t fanboys especially Steve-O(StevenGlansburg) are all jocks. I agree with Sonya grow up. When Verizon gets the iphone watch half the jocks here switch over to Verizon. If it wasnt for the iphone where will at&t be? Thank You Have a nice day
And just to clarify, I sell both Verizon AND AT&T. It doesn’t get much more un-iased than that.

Next, all you dumb people who think our GPS is locked, ITS NOT. And V Cast is better then you Cellular Video shit. We can watch live sutff on V Cast, full TV shows, and Music videos. Cingular/AT&T copied off Verizon for Cellular Video and its crap.
The level of maturity here is, frankly, embarrassing. You’re squabbling over damned mobile service providers like they’re your favorite sports teams — you’re taking offense to comments like someone had insulted your mother or kicked your dog. Its truly a sad day when the discourse here at BGR has sunk BELOW the typical Apple/anti-Apple rabble.
The American telecom giants don’t need your defense. Lighten the hell up.
Oh come on you silly VZW haters . . .
There hasn’t been GPS locks in forever. Smartphone selection is almost equal across the board. Blackberries are equivalent. (FYI, tour>bold) When it get’s down to the dumbphone selection . . . how can you say one is better than the other? 2002 OS? About 70% of Verizon’s selection now contains different OS versions . . . but yes, most are based on the universal VZ OS. Why? Because it’s simple and intuitive. Why bother fixing something that’s not broken?
And where are you getting crippled? My LG Versa? Great camera and video, both with editing capabilities. Flash support! (just plain inexcusable Apple . . . )Zippy Rev. A, GPS (ok, for bashers of VZ nav, it works. Is it a garmin? Nope. Does it fail me? Nope.)
Oh, but wait a min, I don’t get finger flick bowling or a shotgun app that utilizes my accelerometer . . . oh no! how could I forget my compass! Maybe I should abandon VZW 3g everywhere and only paying $30 for unlimited text/data and get a 3 in brick for $70 and putter around on EDGE. But I’ll be cool though!
Point is, please make sure you understand what you are bashing.
hspda is cdma dummy you think they just put those qualcomm stickers on at&t phones for fun.. the only reason hspda is faster than evdo is because europe wanted fast data before the us did.. it has nothing to do with at&t.. sprint and vzw helped pioneer evdo at&t copied europe that was already ahead
at&t cripples phones just as bad or worse than verizon. mobile email for at&t is a joke. they take off any email client the manufacture puts on it and puts mobile email… so if you use gmail, you are SOL. and they hack the fucking java profile so you can’t use the gmail app without hitting ‘grant access’ each time the page reloads… at&t fan boys are defending at&t and calling out verizon for shit that at&t does worse than verizon. in theory umts should be a better technology, it’s at&t’s fault that it’s not, here in the U.S. anyway. cdma/evdo has clear benefits over gsm/umts but in the end it’s verizon that will always win because they actually put their money where their mouth in with their network. at&t still has too much old school telco mentality. they are good at making money and strangling innovation… that’s it.
@StevenGlansburg
“So again, over protective Verizon employees on here, think outside that locked down generic red crippled OS world that you are trapped in. It’s pathetic.”
No, arguing over this is pathetic. Geez, why do people get so bent out of shape when someone makes a non-ass-kissing statement about THEIR WIRELESS CARRIER, who for one doesnt give a shit about you, only your money. Please everyone, find something else worth debating/arguing/competing for. Some people need/choose Verizon for various reasons. Same for AT&T and other carriers.
Yenno, i am subscribed to a few diff RSS feeds and comments are always the same. There’s always someone (or some people) who feel compelled to start an argument. AND PEOPLE FOLLOW SUIT. Just stop it already, it’s really not doing anything. To quote Dr. Phil, “How’s that workin’ for ya?” GAH!
Oh SteveGlansburg, not directly towards you, but you are included in the groups i am speaking of. Just used your comment for context.
LMAO to everybody battling for…. Ummm their carriers, even if you are employed by one of them its pathetic, if you are not think about how pathetic this is.
PS I think vzw have some loyal fans, they always take this shit personally, more than others.
Sorry for the interruption now back to the battle

THANK YOU! At least one commenter here feels the same as i do. It’s like there needs to be some huge, massive therapy session for the commenters on tech sites. Stop feeling so entitled. Just becaues you CAN make comments here, doesn’t mean you should just spit out the first “I am always right and people should listen to me” idea that pops into your head. Write your own tech blog if you’re so knowledgable and spread your ideas/opinions so that others may benefit or choose not to, as is their right.
The Phillies are 10 times better than AT&T or Verizon.
The Phillies are 10 times better than Verizon and AT&T.
The Phillies have much better hitters than Verizon and AT&T
Does anybody here actually get the point here?
ITS THE IPHONE, STUPID!!!
Without the iphone there would be no 1.4 mill new addns.
Used to be with Tmobile until I moved. Then I switched to ATT so I could keep my curve and stay out of contract. However, we don’t have a landline and wife talks to family a LOT. I had to get the $99 unlimited plan with ATT. Now since verizon has a friends and family plan, I save $40 a month. I am now in contract, but $40 a month is a big deal. Call quality seems about equal to me.
“For the full second quarter, AT&T iPhone activations totaled more than 2.4 million, with more than a third of those activations for customers who were new to AT&T.”
Straight from ATT’s press release.
= roughly 800,000 new subscribers. Who knows how many of those could/would have picked a diff phone if the iPhone didnt exist.
Sorry felt like putting more accurate data out there so that these “iPhone added all bazillion accounts” claims.
“Sorry felt like putting more accurate data out there *to counter* these ‘iPhone added all bazillion accounts’ claims.”

What do you know about technology.Your att network sucks big ass. Drop calls like no other, besides your iphone cant send pic msg or video msg. My friend who is using a free phone can send a pic text. If you want to talk about technology do not talk about it in the US, talk about it in Europe or Asia. My 3g speed in Japan is above 7.2 Mbps and my phone can run adobe flash, send pic text, has a full browser with touch screen, considering that I been having my phone for 3 years. I also bought the phone for $900 which will put your cheap ass iphone in the dust…
@nene
Sooo…are you advocating we get a free phone or buy a $900 phone? I really cant tell what you’re getting at here since you suggest that the MUST HAVE feature on a phone, MMS, is available on both freebies and superphones. I suppose though that exorbitant price didn’t include a grammar check or anything that might suggest its owner has any tact. Get over yourself. The ability to buy an overpriced phone doesn’t make you any less of an ass.
People will use the phone that works for them, because if you’re locked into a carrier for two years you’re going to want to be satisfied with what you’re shackled to. Perhaps I could count on one hand the total number of picture messages I’ve ever sent, so the (initial) lack of MMS on the iPhone isn’t a deal breaker. Maybe a touchscreen isn’t for me so I rolled with a Blackberry Curve 8330. All I require is voice and text so I go to Cricket and get a Samsung R210. The point being, the phone someone owns doesn’t make them an ignorant scumbag or a Rico Suave “my $900 phone makes me a better person” übermensch.
As I believe these comments have made abundantly clear you’re still capable of being a colossal dick regardless of what handset or network you use.
