Nokia E72 NAM clears the FCC on its way to your pocket, and your heart
Whether or not you’re a Nokia fan, a Symbian fan or a smartphone fan in general, there’s really no denying that Nokia’s E71 is one of the sexiest phones to ever hit the market at this point. It’s thin, sexy, functional, versatile and solid as a rock. When it comes to slim QWERTY handsets in fact, there’s probably only one we can think of that might be even sexier — the Nokia E72. As it turns out, the North American (NAM) variant of said beauty just made its way through the halls of the FCC and has been given the all-clear from the powers that be. To refresh your memory specs-wise, you’re looking at 10.2Mbps HSDPA (not in the US, of course), an integrated compass, S60 3rd Edition FP2 and a 5 megapixel camera. Need we say more? Considering the E72 is now through the FCC’s testing process we can safely make two assumptions: 1. It’s bound to hit store shelves pretty soon. 2. Nokia and AT&T should have a deal for the E72x worked out some time in 2015. Hit the jump for a few more pics.

Not only should ATT have a good price point on this phone, they should lower the data plan by 10 dollars on this phone.
Right now, I’d be happy with anyone making it available with any subsidy at all. There’s a demand for Nokia smartphones in the US. Carriers need to accept that and open up the decks.
Lol sometime in 2015.
Demand? Did you see the earnings Nokia posted yesterday……TERRIBLE. Its forced Nokia to look at their overall strategy in the US and they are going to make changes.
That backplate is hi-de-ou-s! Sweet fone though.
Does anyone understand why Nokia wanted to pass the non North American version of the E55 and then we hear about this…?
JK, Not sure I’d call Nokia’s earnings “terrible” a billion dollars profit in the current climate is still pretty good!
Am i the only one who thinks this phone is hideous? The buttons look awful as well. The specs are much better than blackberries..but i’d still rather choose my blackberry for the keyboard and scroll ball alone. (the 5-way navigator isn’t my cup of tea…a little old-school).
To each their own i guess…
Billium, the #’s were terrible. Wall street agrees with me, the stock opened yesterday at 15.36 and the stock closed at 13.46. That is a lot of selling. The earnings were awful. They reported .10 cents per share, last year it was .29 cents per share. That is a huge drop off.
5way keypad should be done with. As for the earning & demand of Nokia in the states… There’s way too much compition for the Nokia line. There are so many good phones out there. & seems like carriers have their hands full with others like RIM, Apple. HTC, Moto, Samsung, LG, Palm… Just seems to me that the market is already flooded…
Buying it!
that’s a trackpad!
I think it’s pretty ugly too. Same with E71/E71x. I have an N85 and an HTC Fuze/Touch Pro, and I can say the battery life on the N85 is insanely awesome compared to any WinMo phone I’ve used or played with.
Nokia definitely knows how to make phone batteries more efficient, or at least last longer, while doing the same tasks as a WinMo phone. I don’t know why every gadget blog has a hard-on for the E71/72, but apparently the majority of consumers don’t. I don’t doubt it’s an excellent phone, but for style I think it looks a bit odd. And by odd I mean ugly.
I think it looks good, nice nice and thin and I like the metalic look. E71 also looked awesome, e71x crippled pos. I would get this phone is the symbian ui was improved more and a little more pleasing to the eye and no so windows 98 ish.

I am generally a huge fan of Nokia, specifically the stability of S60 on a keyboard device. But, common Nokia, this is just a minor refresh, not a new model.
Nokia, a new E-series devices needs OMAP3 and a heck of a better resolution screen, you cannot continue to shove QVGA screens in these devices like it’s 2005.
Does anyone know if any of these new Nokia’s will be able to use Blackberry’s Push service? I recall they discontinued that a while ago, not sure if they brought it back…
Doubtful I’ll pick this one up. I’m hoping the Hero lands on AT&T or at least allows me 3G bands on an unlocked version.
My favorite things on my E71X:
1 – size
2 – qwerty
3 – weight
My least favorite things on my E71X:
1 – 2002 style OS
2 – AT&T preloaded crap
3 – web browser
Nokia has their own email push service now (email.nokia.com), so I’m not sure that they would restart using RIM’s. Anyway, I’m using it and it works great!
this is an optical trackpad….
saying it’s a rehash is a pretty weak argument considering the latest iphone is a rehash albeit faster and every blackberry looks the same as the last.
moving on, i would buy this unlocked, not crippled by att, besides you’ll be saving money over the long haul with $15/month for data over $30 data for subsidized models. nokia is also offering a lifetime license of it’s nokia messaging (push email, IM) and lifetime walking navigation with nokia maps when you buy the e72. the camera looks pretty solid given the recent leaks on flickr, and you can’t beat the stainless steel design either imo.
Have the E71 and I love it.. E72 looks pretty good.. that bronze color is EPIC FAIL though.
Whoever claims this as a “rehash” of the E71 doesn’t know much about the inner workings of phones. I will buy this the day it comes out. It finally does what the original E71 should have done.
-faster processor (600MHz vs 368MHz)
-USB charging
-new standard audio jack (3.5mm vs 2.5mm)
-better camera (5MP vs 3MP)
-active noise cancellation
i <3 my e71 till death do us apart, but ima to divorce her once the e72 drops into my pocket.
Merry early Christmas!!!
I love the E71 that I just bought off my friend, and am replacing the entire casing and outer parts to give it a refresh. I will sell it when the E72 comes out and buy the E72 immediately. Yay!
Hurry it up Nokia USA!
Yea, the E72 is going to be mine. The color isn’t my favorite but there may be other colors avail. in time. The trackpad is what gets me, it’s going to make web browsing a ton better.
