Sony Ericsson reports Q2 earnings; ouch

Following a rough morning for our friends in Finland, things are looking even worse just to the west. Sony Ericsson’s Q2 2009 was, in short, a disaster. To start, it shipped just over half the handsets it did a year ago — 13.8 million compared to 24.4 million in Q2 2008. That figure is also down from 14.5 in Q1 2009. Sales were down to €1.7 billion from €2.8 billion a year ago and where income is concerned, SE lost €213 million in the quarter. Sheesh. The silver lining on this incredibly dark cloud is that Q1 saw the company lose €293 million so at least the bleeding has slowed a bit. Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson, had this to say:

As expected, the second quarter was challenging and we still believe the remainder of the year will be difficult for Sony Ericsson. Our focus remains on bringing the company back to profitability and growth as quickly as possible, and our performance is starting to improve due to our cost reduction activities. The new product portfolio that integrates communications, entertainment and social media applications should contribute to healthier topline development when shipments start later this year. We remain confident that the actions we are taking will further improve our financial situation and strengthen Sony Ericsson’s competitiveness.

My 1st cell was a Ericsson from Sprint PCS back in 1996, that was a quality phone. Once they mated with Sony, the whole line got stuck in the year 2000.

I think RIM and Apple are the only 2 left standing provided that the numbers are confirming it, of course. Let’s see how the maga-pixlers work out for them in the next Q.

Didnt they just takeover some of Sprints operations? Seems like a match made in heaven.

where SE phones are concerned, the charging port is still the biggest trouble maker. it doesn’t break that often if you take care but when it does the customer always blame to store. why on earth not make it a round like nokia or something a lot more reliable.

ps: and the stupid proprietary memory stick issue when customer switches phone..

I agree, Sony is trying to hard to make things their own way with their own gadgets like their memory card.

More cell phones would sell if they were cheaper. ( ex. Xperia1 –> disapointment too much $$$ and little support).

They say they are streamlining but I doubt that will work either.

I’m thinking it’s because they are the only retarted company that sells crappy phones for $500. That and Sony probably pulled money from Sony Ericcson to sue 15 year old kids who downloaded music.

Here here, I would have loved to have a Experia x1 (I think that’s what it was called which proves my point also) but they choose not to let me give them some of my money, which I also ran into working with Sprint. ( I think Sprint prefers to TAKE you’re money than receive it.
