New Samsung Omnia software from Verizon drops shortly; so long, GPS lock

Have you been feeling left out lately, Samsung Omnia owners? You know deep down that your sexy Windows Mobile-powered touchscreen handset is a gem, but waiting around for Verizon to unlock the GPS is definitely trying your patience. Just when you were about to lose hope however, Verizon is finally ready to push out the update you’ve been waiting for. Yup, GPS lock is about to become a thing of the past. The update is all set to be pushed out within the hour so sit tight. Woo! We’re not sure what other fixes/features are included in this update but the important thing is that the big one is covered. Keep checking for that update and let us know how it goes!
UPDATE: It looks like the update is now live and ready to rock as of just before 4pm. Get moving people…

Looks like it is live now!
OK. What are the haters going to say about this one?
The “haters” will keep wondering why Verizon customers are so loyal to a company that insists on castrating their phones in whatever way suits them – every time.
oh no. i’ve created a monster.
anyways, bring on the sequel.
What’s the likelyhood that they’ll unlock GPS on the XV6800, just to tide me (and others over) until the Touch Pro2 launch?
Where do you get this download, sorry noob here.
my omnia screen is cracked & theres a black water mark that take about 1/4 of the screen. too late for the update… bb much better anyways…
How generous of them to unlock something that should’ve never been locked in the first place. Good job, Verizon. I can’t wait to switch.
Reminds a lot of when apple allowed copy/paste… So to all those who bash apple for such things yet praise verizon check that.

Will this update hit if your running the unofficial winmo 6.5?
Finally, THANK YOU VERIZON for unlocking a feature on a phone thats been out for two years!!!
The Omnia has not been out for 2 years.
@ Anon
I think most people understand why subscribers tend to be pretty loyal to Verizon. The fact is, there are large swaths of the country where Verizon is the only game in town, particularly if you have any interest in 3G.
@Johnny Just click here
Thats cool but lets stop complaining about lock gps is not like most of the people that have the phone are going to even use it we are just complaining for the sake of complaining . locked gps or not the Omnia is pretty awsome and you can say anything you want about Verizon but who doesnt like their phone having internet and voice service whereever you go lets be happy and look forward to the Omnia 2.
Hey Joe, Grr. What’s up?
Anyone try this yet? I get the feeling its not exactly going to be an upgrade.
anyone know if this works with a factory unlocked gsm sgh-i900
Update works. From what I’ve seen theres alotta improvements. but the best thing is… GPS is finally unlocked and i can use google maps.
The Omina Pro will be out VERY VERY Soon. The Omina Pro is the new verison of the Samsung Glyde.
@StevenGlansburg – Comparing a basic function like Cut & Paste with something like GPS is laughable at best. Granted, this should have been unlocked from the get-go, but pulling out “Cut & Paste = GPS” is really grasping at straws there.
I know AT&T lost one customer today. My friend at work has an iPhone. Apparently, while downloading the update, it bricked. AT&T told him to pound sound, but that would gladly sell him another iPhone for $99 if he’ll extend his contract. His answer: “No thanks, I’ve been eyeballing my friend’s Tour anyway. This is the perfect reason to go get one.”
Yeah, they might’ve kept me with this a year ago, but now i’m only going to accept phones w/ OS’s w/ app systems in place.
Oh, and thank for enabling a feature on my device that was native to it. Really generous.
Yes, this worked, I upgraded last night on my Omnia. I had to download 3rd party app (Google Maps works fine) to use the unlocked GPS. The UI has been slightly improved but in my opinion dings performance somewhat.
After you download the file and backup the files on the phone, the process takes about 10min to complete.
Thanks VZW (after 3 years having service)
I’m one of the dozen or so VZW customers with a Touch Diamond. I hope they’re not done yet with the unlock rollout!!
If you have a HTC Diamond, then just flash a custom ROM.
