BlackBerry OS 5.0 to have tabbed browsing

You know us; we have nothing for love for RIM but it seems that its case of ADD is a lot worse than previously thought. For the better part of a week we’ve been playing around with a new beta build of OS 5.0 and noticed that it has a new feature that has yet to be seen on any other OS 5.0 betas — tabbed browsing. Sound a bit familiar? Well it should, because RIM has been working on getting tabbed browsing right since at least June of 2007. As it stands, the process of opening a new tabs isn’t something we can complain about (all that you have to do is hit the Menu button, click Tabs and then New Tab), but switching between two or more tabs is, quite frankly, a huge pain in the ass as there is no keyboard shortcut. This strikes us as rather hilarious as BlackBerrys are legendary for the speed at users can fly around the devices. We’re praying that the clunkyness of tabbed browsing is just because it’s not ready for prime time and that some added functionality, including shortcuts, will hit before launch. Hit the jump to see tabbed browsing in action.

They been needed a new browser. Three years after the iPhone browser? Damn near every smartphone maker has better broswer experience. I’ve always said they continue to slap new materials over old and out dated software. Granted it works but when you can put 5.0 on an 8700 damn near it’s time to revamp.

    Also, I agree with MushroomStamp.

    @Get-a-life…

The pure, delicious irony of you coming onto a gadget site to argue about the superiority of your gadget by calling everyone else arguing about the superiority of their gadgets nerds and losers is so, so, so sweet.

Seriously. It’s the nectar of life.

    You a motivational speaker?

I’ve got a life, pal. I feel like I’ve got enough “life” for 3 people, at least. And it *may* be silly but I love the shit out of these devices. And reading about them. You, above all, should know that neither the Bold, nor the iPhone, or even the N99 are way more than mere phones.

This is not all that exciting for a smart phone.

I wish they would spend their time and resources getting rendering and navigation right instead!

exactly! nice and much needed feature and all, but that browser just plain sucks. it’s like the IE of the mobile community. instead of adding new crap, fix everything that’s wrong with it first.

Some of you bberry bashers are dipshits. My blackberry loads faster than any any iphone or other smartphones. Not to mention Sprints data speeds are comparative to dsl/low grade broadband. So GetaLife, Mushroomstamp, and Andrew – take you jitterbug phones and shove them up you fucking asses. You guys don’t know shit. Iphones lick balls.

Adam: you’re the dipshit — I am a blackberry user and have been for over 5 years and I’ve owned stock for longer than that. So shut the hell up, and troll elsewhere. It’s not news that the blackberry browser leaves a lot to be desired in terms of speed and rendering. It’s a fact, and one that everyone acknowledges, except you it seems…

Andrew, you’re a douche. You’re the one pissing and moaning about bberry rendering speeds, blah blah blah. It would help if you had some technical ability or half a brain. F**ing douche.

    Relax, child.
I guess administering BES, Exchange 2007, Server 2008, DB2, Cisco, Linux, VMWare, Citrix and other systems is not technical enough for the almighty Adam.
Good lord, son, get a life already. Did Mother forget to pay your Cell bill last month? Take your anger elsewhere – this’ll be my last comment feeding this troll.

What is being updated in SMS handling in 5.0? Hopefully it threads properly.

What devices is this expected to be released onto? I’m hoping it’s available for my 9630 from Verizon.

    Help!

I can open new windows on my N96, and was able to on my N95. Given that you can’t see the two windows at once, and must switch between them using a menu rather than having a unique button for each tab, I fail to see how this is anything big.

You guys are really, and i really do mean really nerdy (no need to point out my grammar, it was intentional – nerds)

Why do any of you care why a blackberry or the iphone does this or how it does that? Its a damned cell phone. Seriously, who cares?
