Windows Marketplace for Mobile to accept submissions starting July 27th, launches this fall
There it is, Windows Mobile developers — the day you’ve kind of, sort of, maybe been waiting for. Todd Brix, Senior Director for Mobile Platform Services Product Management at Microsoft has just announced that the company will begin accepting app submissions in 29 supported countries on July 27th. As in, less than two weeks from today. Woo! Brix goes on to report that Microsoft is on schedule to launch its “Windows Marketplace for Mobile” this fall alongside Windows Mobile 6.5. Current users shouldn’t fret of course, as the Marketplace will also be available on WinMo 6.0 and 6.1 before the year is out. So what say you, Windows Mobile fans — think the Marketplace can compete?

too little too late. WM has a lot of catching up to do.
@steved
why is it catching up? it’s not like you can’t buy apps already. Marketplace just puts it in one location.
@Steved
It’s more like everyone else has a lot of catching up to do with Windows Mobile (Which Pioneered most of this stuff)
You want too see catching up? Check out the iPhone 3GS commercials acting like Video and Copy-n-paste on a phone is revolutionary . . . . . Pathetic!
Exactly. Ever heard of Handango? Of course not… no apple faboys ever heard of these things because their sense of history is like an iPhone… small, thin and locked to one company.
Catching up to 1.5 billion downloads is what he is talking about. Everyone is playing catch up to apple, fan boy or not.
My question is will Verizon say yes to microsoft and their app store?
Can I get an OpenGL SDK plz? thx.
Using the external Vincent 3D library should be completely unnecessary. It’s about time to stop thinking you’re the only game in town, M$.
Oooooookay Snorks. You know, in the entire history of Windows VS Mac, no one has EVER said, “Apple has a lot of catching up to do in the OS market”. Apple nuts always point garbage info like that out first.
How many of you actually work in business and finance? Anyone who does knows immediately that “1.5 billion” is markteting spin. Real financial analysts would want to know: How many are paid apps? How many are free apps? What apps are we talking about? How many handsets? How many repeat downloads on the same handset? How many deleted?
This is not Anti-Apple sentiment, I’d have all the same questions and criticisms across ALL platforms… be it Blackberry, Android, Palm or WinMo. saying “1.5 billion” is just advertisement until I see data that’s drilled down to prove it. I also know how creative us numbers guys can get… I wouldn’t be surprised if 1.5 billion was just a ballpark figure derived from some averages being multiplied against another number. Because that’s the kind of crap we’re paid to do to make your company look good.
First!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ha, Ha, Ha…….
I’ve never been first. I have been so envious of the posters who have beaten me each time. Suck it!!!!
Poochie
I am a wm user (mogul) and when it comes to productivity mocrosoft has the lock. apple has the market lock on “fun”. who actually manipulates excel spreadsheets on a phone? I think i’ll be trying android next.
@Snork
Well, Verizon preloads Handango on most of it’s WM handsets, and that is more or less the same thing. I don’t see why they would be opposed to an official version. Especially since THEY do not sell WM software. Not to mention that Microsoft probably has it in their contracts with various manufacturers and carriers. But that part is just a guess.
And besides that 1.5 Billion downloads. Over all the years that Windows Mobile has been out – can you tell me that they haven’t already beat that number? I beat they have but since their is no official distribution channel, it would be hard to prove!
Given that Windows Mobile has had the ability to download and install applications since circa 2002, I would say there have probably been 1.5 billion downloads of windows mobile applications since then.
Not counting the years that the same platform existed as a PDA only where you could download and install applications on it even then.
Nice thing is, anyone could host a WIndows Mobile application without an APp store. ANd now one can tell you what you can and can’t make/sell as a Windows Mobile App.
Well, at least it looks better than Blackberry App “World.” RIM should of done a lot better…here is to hoping that Microsoft does better than RIM.
Im with WinMo on this one. SteveD said it right with WinMo having the lock on productivity where as the Iphone carries the ‘fun’ tag. Are there a lot of great apps out there for the Iphone? Yea, some awesome apps actually. But on a numbers case where do the lines draw between quantity and quality?
I am with SnorksRSmurfsCopycat on the analytical approach. Was the 1.5B a confirmed number from Apple or was it like the Pre boasting “we sold X Pre’s and every one of those Pre’s *must have* purchased 7 apps right when they picked their phone up so thats this many apps downloaded.”
Regardless of where each group stands the Marketplace will be a great enhancement to all WinMo phones.
i heard it was only for windows mobile 6.5
when did they announce it was going to be available for window mobile 6 and 6.1?
Just my two cents, but considering the traditional, shear openness and versatility of WM and it’s apps, I think M$ may end up with something great on their hands. I have owned WM devices since the time it was called Windows CE (along with every other OS except Symbian), and I have been able to get my devices to do everything under the sun: from being a TV remote, to being a Skype phone, to remotely controlling my desktop, to emulating PSone hardware. But I also can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to find an app for a specific function and finally given up because it was so inconvenient to find a lot of good one’s for free that were available OTA (aka via .CAB files).
Like I said, M$ may have something great in the works here…
It is smart and style nikia mobile ,staying here for you to chose.
