Nokia’s E55 graduates from FCC Community College

We here at BGR have always had something of a fetish for pics of smartphones taken by the guys and gals at the FCC, so we thought we’d share a few pics of the Nokia E55 that we stumbled upon late last night. The photos — which we have to admit aren’t even that bad considering that they were taken by lab rats — do a good job in showing off the diminutive figure of of this ridiculously sexy S60 smartphone, which comes in at 9.9mm thick. So just when can we expect to see the E55 and its “compact QWERTY” Stateside? That’s not known as this point, but Europeans will be able to pick one up soon for €265 (about $371 USD). Hit the jump for a few more pics.

Thanks, Michael!

Yeah I’m not a big fan of “compact QWERTY” or SureType keyboards, but the people who do get used to them swear by them.

This definitely has potential to steal some BB Pearl owners–if Nokia were smart, they’d get T-Mobile and AT&T to subsidize these babies!

When will the idiots on BGR stop basing the merits of a appliance/device on its looks. I know the writers don’t know how to review or critique a device thoroughly and properly, but BGR readers are the dumbest group I’ve come across in years… The dumbest.

Symbian Freaks may be geeks, but we learned long ago not to judge a book by its cover. Otherwise we’d think BGR’s writers were geniuses…

@christexaport Good. Go away. No one will miss you, your fanboy rants, your trolling, your shameless attempts to get even the slightest bit of traffic over to Teo’s peon site, your wannabe ghetto vernacular or your continued criticism of BGR despite the fact that not one sentence on Teo’s site is intelligible or of any value to anyone. Go back to Teo and the rest of the kiddies over there and have fun convincing yourself that Symbian’s weaknesses are its strengths. It’s perfect. Nokia is perfect. No one should have an opinion otherwise. Great… No one cares.

Again, you will not be missed. Go. Away.

    The compact QWERTY/SureType is a love/hate relationship.
After teaching the phone, it has become the fastest one hand text entry method I’ve used and okay, though not as good as a real QWERTY, for two handed thumbing but the phones that have them are only but so good.
An N82 hardware-like candy bar or a better slider, say, an updated Samsung i8510 with Symbian or BB as a key only OS (having destroyed a few touch only phones, key entry has a place) and a SureType might be a very good business phone.
Being able to put a key only OS phone in a sealed case has been a life saver more than once.
The dumb thing? Forgetting the standard 12 key alphabetical layout.

El Bastardo and John Jacob Jingleheimer are gay butt lovers that swing on BGR’s nut sack. Get a Nokia and you will realized that plastic POS of a BB Pearl is just a toy. BGR is just a bunch of BB and Apple fanboys.

I think its funny that BGR has yet to publish any reports on the iPhone’s overheating issue (even though Apple themselves have released a statement about it already). Yet BGR will take swipe at the N97 any chance they get. Actually, I am not surpised at because BGR has to cater to the douchebags like El Bastardo and John Jacob Jingleheimer.

    Todd Korpi says:

First of all, Chris C, I love the “that’s what she said” thrown in there under the radar.

Secondly, Nokia devices are shamelessly overlooked in the United States, not just by BGR. But that’s partly the fault of my fellow Finns. Nokia has been extremely hesitant to released phones in the United States that are both sufficiently subsidized and is more than the “Free with a 2 year Contract” phone on the shelves of American Telecomm companies (minus the E71x of course, which is a freaking awesome phone). Because of this choice, Nokia’s best phones are kept on the other side of the Atlantic by and large therefore American society hasn’t become accustomed to the look of phones, and, in ignorance, reject them because they don’t look like Motorola’s soporific RAZR-esc designs.

Nokia is without question the king of phones across the globe. What BGR thinks of their devices really doesn’t matter because in the end, on a global scale, the Finns sell more phones than anyone else—because it’s a better product, hands down. They may look “different” but it’s pretty ignorant to reduce the quality of a phone to its appearance.

But kudos to BGR for keeping us posted on wireless news, nevertheless.

    @ El Bastardo,

You sure you won’t miss me? Not one bit? Bummer… My life is so empty now. I’ll miss you, though. You do such a good job making me and others look good with your inability to have an educated and informed opinion.

Until I came along, alot of people actually thought they could get valueable information from BGR’s readers, but idiots like you dilute the informative anectodes, leaving the remaining useless prattle to confuse anyone and eliminate any chance of getting real data from this site. The writers are ok, if not very technically advanced or motivated to keep some informed, but most of the readers are jerks like you, tools that type “first” “tuh tuh tour” and “iPhone does so much more than any Nokia, and outsells Nokia day in and day out”. Pure lying, dumb, typical know it all Americans. You embarrass yourself, truly.

There are alot of readers that used BGR in the past to learn about devices. I’d learned that users were becoming dissatisfied with the level of information about foreign devices, mostly Nokias and Symbian devices. I saw an opportunity to connect with those readers as well as inject an alternative opinion. I’m very industrious, and if that’s a fault, its one I’m proud to have. Why shouldn’t I offer my assistance to someone that finds themselves wanting more information? I send people to this site for information I find useful at times, too. I’m not in a contest with anyone, but I take the growth of my community and the tech blog community as a whole seriously. Many don’t. We all serve a community, and we have to connect with our audiences from time to time. Is that a bad thing? I think not.

Its perfectly fine for you to state your contrary opinion on “Teo’s site” whenever you like. Be prepared to rebutted by “kids” that are far better informed and educated than you appear to be. Some of the top software developers, device designers, smart consumers, and multilingual writers in the world call my community home. What have YOU contributed to today’s mobile society? Not much I could find, and if Google doesn’t know you, you’re largely an unknown.

It’s my duty as a tech analyst and Senior Editor of Symbian Freak to never hide behind a screen name, an avatar, or my intentions. I’ve long known that BGR had a perceived image as a site that panders to certain manufacturers, whether because of financial influence , a personal vendetta, a misguided intention, or just a particular desire to judge devices based upon only a casual usage model.

I can’t direct BGR to be more thorough or open minded, and admittedly, not all of BGR’s nonetheless talented writers agree with the readers or each other. But being a smartphone fan and led by a sense of duty, I only want readers across the web to have the most information from various perspectives to facilitate consumers to come to their own educated decision.

“Teo’s site”, which I won’t mention in this post but is well known even by the likes of brats like you, is a community resource with absolutely no outside sponsorships or alliances with any carriers. We review ALL devices on the merits upon which they stand. While most of us see Symbian as the best desktop replacement software for mobiles, we know it has its caveats as well, and not all of our readers feel Symbian is the best OS for them. We were harsh in our reviews and impressions of the N96, N97, and 5800 XM because of the potential of the OS and the missteps Nokia made, just as we are of iPhones, Blackberries, WinMo devices, and the Pre, praising and lampooning each OS for the reasons we do or don’t like them.

And with the traffic data of the last 2 years, “Teo’s site” has similar readership figures to BGR, so we obviously aren’t any more of a peon site than this one. We weren’t too much of a peon to attract your reading eyes, either, I noticed. Sorry you were disappointed, but over 100,000 registered community members speaking a smorgasbord or languages aren’t, so we see no reason to cater to a reader such as yourself at this time. We’re always open to change, but right now it just doesn’t make sense.

I’m pretty perplexed at your characterization of my writing as “wannabe ghetto vernacular”. I’ll give you a little insight. I am an educated and experienced Black American man, and was raised in many settings, from city areas, rural townships, urban areas you refer to as ghettos and barrios, and I currently live in Arlington, Tx, as unghetto as you can get. I’m a reformed man, being a former street gang member and ex-convict. I work with inner city youth to avoid gangs, drugs and alcohol, and street violence. I mentor quite a few young men, and am very proud that I can have such an influence on a young person. So while my writing may have given away my cultural background, it in no way insinuated I was from a lower income, economically depressed, blighted area. I don’t love or “wannabe” ghetto, nor do I glamourize it. In fact, I find your comment to be outright racist. All minorities aren’t from the ghetto, and everyone in the ghetto doesn’t act the same, nor do they all desire or like living in the ghetto. I’m simply a Black man from a well-travelled but mostly urban Southern US upbringing. Don’t be an idiot and willingly try on the sweater of bigotry. Its an ill fitting look, and will earn you respect. It’ll only make you look like a fool, and you do that well enough already.

I’m completely flabbergasted that anyone would ask that I not criticize BGR! BGR’s persona is all about opinion, and they are the most critical writing crew online I can think of. When you write the things they do, allow an open commenting platform, and don’t moderate the tools that sling mud in that forum, you must also accept any criticism that may come back in return. If this is a BGR fan club, open commenting shouldn’t be allowed, but it isn’t. It’s an OPEN discussion. I know all the iPhone and Verizon scrotum crimpers associated with the BGR readership and writers have little understanding of the word, but it means free speech prevails until further notice. I’ll continue saying whatever I like, and you will continue to hide behind fake names to protect yourself from any personal retribution. My real name is Chris McFann, christexaport is a well known an public screen name that connects to many resources you can use to contact me if you would like to discuss anything in person, and I promise you can tell me whatever you wish. I just know you’re a cyber coward, and I doubt you’d ever contact me with such a foolhardy proposition, so stay in your place, El Bastardo, before I have to teach you anything more.

I don’t need instructions from you on what my next moves should be. Go ahead and Google “christexaport”, or read about my “N-XT concept” and see how many sites, manufacturers, carriers, and people respect my opinion. I haven’t found much on “El Bastardo” worth noting. There’s a reason BGR and I are some of the first to get trial devices and you aren’t, and it’s because you’re an insignigicant little man. You call yourself “El Bastardo”, for heaven’s sake! Why not just call yourself “Don’t Respect or Take Me Seriously” and cut to the chase?

I’m well aware of Nokia’s weaknesses and strengths. I don’t think Nokia is perfect, and “Teo’s site” would agree. I just think it has more potential, usefullness, and capabilities than anything that is available. Not many argue with that opinion, either. It isn’t as simple, but the iPhone isn’t as simple as a Razr, but I KNOW why its better. So do Engadget, Mobile Crunch, AAS, SF, the Phones Show, IntoMobile, and every other site but this one, it seems. Its the reason I read this site. I’m interested in the perspective that can result in such opinions as BGR’s. That will help me help Symbian know how to cater to more types of consumers.

I’m happy you have a life online, but you don’t speak for everyone here or anywhere else. From the sounds of it, I doubt you have much say in your own home. Grow some stones, talk to me like a man, and get a life. No one cares if you write another post anywhere. If they do, step forward. I doubt you get much support, but everyone has their own opinion…

Well put, Todd Korpi, but I put more blame on the American carriers than Nokia alone. When the N95’s sold so well and at&t refused to carry it, it showed there were underlying motives within the carrier circles. Each carrier has a smart software platform and device manufacturers they pander to in order to maximize control and profit. at&t has the iPhone OS, Verizon as RIM, Sprint has Web OS, and TMobileUSA has Android. They don’t want to venture too far away from those gardens for a premium product that may cannibalize sales from devices they’ve invested so much into branding and positioning. Nokia is at the point they might need to buy one of the big four just to get a foot in, because they already have their own agendas, and are afraid of changing those strategies right now.

Unless TMobileUSA and at&t agree to start sharing costs to build out transmission infrastructure or reach roaming agreements for data in the future, not much will change, either.

On the subject of this device, it’s basically an E71 with a portrait oriented screen and a T9/Suretype keypad. Nokia has become flexible for those consumers that don’t prefer a touch or QWERTY keypad. This is Nokia’s strength, and this agility is exactly why Nokia is the world leader nearly 5 years running. Not everyone likes the same form factors, but the Symbian feature set and capabilities are still the selling point, and no matter what BGR thinks, this thing will sell. S60 3rd Edition is a legendary OS with a mature and robust catalog of useful apps, not just games and iBoobs. This diminutive device, when properly equipped witht the right suite of available applications, will perform better as a laptop replacement than any device from Apple, Blackberry, Palm or WinMo. That is Nokia and Symbian’s strength. Some people want cute looks, others nice transitions. Others are looking for technical details, usefulness, and the potential these devices hold in maxed out form.

This device is an A+, just like its cousin the E71, one of the best selling smartphones in Nokia’s history. Choice is good, and Nokia provides it. Take that, El Bastardo! I know he doesn’t want anything but iPhones and Blackberries to get love, but 40% of the entire globe knows better than to listen to the likes of him, and the meager 12% that subscribe to his device choice are just a minority nonetheless. Evidently BGR’s opinion hasn’t made much difference, but to each his own. I’ll keep it geeksta…

    El Bastardo says:

@christexaport Well, I googled you as you suggested. Not very surprisingly, I found a variety of small sites and a even more comments on various real blogs stroking Nokia and trying to lure traffic over to Teo’s site.

Just FYI: Since it’s quite clear you haven’t picked up on this, I use the handle El Bastardo and post here every once in a while for one reason and one reason alone. To piss off trolls like you. I do it every so often when I’m bored because it’s fun. Clearly I’m good at it too, as per your diatribe that made my eyes glaze over after about three sentences.

I did skim the rest though, and I’m glad you have a sense of accomplishment. It’s a great thing to have. I’m also glad you got smart and found ways to occupy your time that helped you change your life around. Don’t overdo it though… you don’t see bloggers from sites like BGR, CrunchGear, Engadget or Gizmodo going around trolling sites for traffic. Big sites already know they’re being watched. I’m not sure what makes you think Teo’s site and BGR have a similar readership’s either. I don’t know what BGR’s numbers look like but 100,000 is not a very big number.

I’m not trying to belittle you, ok maybe a little bit, but try to understand that you are not conducting yourself as a professional would. There’s a reason the “El Bastardo” persona and my true identity never cross paths. You might think about how your behavior and actions are affecting your future. Imagine you try to write for a big site one day… Do you think a newspaper, Engadget or even BGR are going want to hire a troll whose blind love for a company and OS cause his to do constant battle in the comments section of blogs? No, they’re not.

As for what I do for a living, I have no intention of discussing it here. Suffice it to say I work for a large company in the wireless industry and the decisions made/work done by myself and the rest of my team directly affect the toys later lusted after by you and everyone else who reads this blog.

Lastly, since it’s also quite clear you don’t understand this site in the least, hopefully I can further open your eyes. Don’t underestimate the writers here or think that you have a better grasp of the wireless industry than they do. True, a few of them are filler/garbage. I’ve had some email conversations with one of them though, and he definitely knew his shit. This site is about quick “scoops” and talking shit. You clearly don’t get it but shtick or no shtick, there’s a reason News organizations and major media watch BGR and not Teo’s site. Only children and trolls comment here but the site’s readership extends well beyond. Trust me, plenty of people at my company and others like it watch this site like a hawk…

    @christexaport-
I’d suggest you take your insignificantly small brain out of your ass and take a hard look at reality. Repeating the sentence “I am important” will not make you so. Repeatedly asserting that you are a part of some bigshot ‘group’ of ‘hardcore’ users will not make you sound intelligent.
You do NOT have single ounce of credibility anywhere except SF, which used to be a great forum until you came along and started flaming everyone who didn’t kiss your worthless ass. Sadly, the forum is now filled with mutual ass kissers who worry about nothing but their post count and cry every time a new Nokia is launched.
Your so called ‘nxt’ concept is nothing but a sad, pathetic attempt of a self obsessed looser who is just not in touch with reality. Nokia is embarresed to have you for a fanboy. Oh and don’t say ’show me your “concept phone”‘. Your piece of shit is just that – a pathetic concept. A 5 yr retard could make that. Oh wait, you ARE that!
I doubt whether you are ‘reformed’, reading as to how you just got out of prison, had to sell your car, live with your mother, have no job, no money and not surprisingly having being just dumped by your girl. I can imagine you sitting on your momma’s couch, beer guzzling, thinking about just how to get your non existent self importance back and saying hey! I know! I’ll flame every damn forum out there! Maybe someone will be impressed by my verbal diarrhoea and give me a job.

That apart, this phone is simply awesome. Nokia is walking a thin line with the QVGA resolution but hopefully not for too long. Nokia ftw!

    @ DisGuy,
Thanks for the suggestion. I always want to know what guys like you think I should do. Now which iPhone or Blackberry should I buy? And what color underwear should I wear? Give me a break, DisGuy… You’re such a joke.

I don’t care how important I am to you, but am proud nonetheless of people’s respect for my opinion. And while giving advice, I spoke to a high level project manager from a major manufacturer yesterday, and he specifically told me how unimportant guys with silly names like “DisGuy” and “El Bastardo” are, but that’s a personal thing.

I never called my community “hardcore”, but I’m glad you did. We pretty much are. We aren’t all Symbian users primarily, but we take mobilism very seriously, but guys like you, not so much. I have been told I was of superior intelligence since I was in grade school, and no affirmation is needed. I’m confident in my skin, enough to use my real name and represent the same mission online or in person. Ask anyone about me, I’m true to myself and my beliefs.

I have no credibility outside my community?! OH! You’re trying to call me INCREDIBLE! Thanks. It means alot to be complimented by such a visionary as yourself.

Sorry my N-XT concept wasn’t to your liking. Its a function specific form factor meant for intelligent users. I’ll come up with something a bit more simple for you. By the way, where’s your concept? I guess you must be a 4 year old retard since you don’t have one, so you have a year to catch up. Don’t hate on something above your ability. I’d love to see you do better.

I’m glad Nokia relays its message of embarrassment through you. In my conference with the project manager yesterday, he never mentioned it. I guess he forgot. He did mention you, though… Oh, wait. No he didn’t.

I got released from prison in 1998. You obviously didn’t read up on me very closely. I am in a transition right now, and I’m not the first one to do so, but it won’t hold me back. I may not have a 9 to 5, but I record music and write to make ends meet until I’m called back to work. My girl is right by my side, however, and I’m lucky to have her. I bet you’re still waiting on your first girlfriend. It’ll come. Stop reading about men like me and focus on females more, and anything’s possible.

I’m not a major beer drinker, and I spend most my time at my lady’s house, but nice stab, Dis. Your dis was pretty funny, I have to admit. You’re still a putz, but I like to see someone so adept at low blows. Your knees must be killing you. LOL! You win, Dis. I can’t hang with you. I’m too busy working for all that.

I agree this phone is awesome. I think better displays will never come for 3rd Edition, and until the new Symbian comes out, we will only see QVGA for non touch devices. That sucks, but we have to be patient.

Lies. I don’t want to put up any links to SF but your girl posted asking everyone to pray and hope that you get released from prison soon about 6 to 9 months ago. You even posted some thread about your comeback detailing the fascinating state of your life right now, which happens to be the source of info of my previous post. Hell you even were about to sell your N95-2. You are THAT broke and worthless, pretending to be otherwise and trolling everywhere, evangelising about how ‘we at SF are superior geeks’. Dude, we at SF are geeks but we don’t need a fool like you to spray shit over our reputation. Man, at least own up to what you did and admit how you were broke and busted. Maybe the truth will help increase your credibility.
That apart, I am disappointed by your half hearted attempts to counter my jibes. Man what happened to you! I’ve never been a fan of your meaningless rants, but I’ve held a certain reluctant opinion of them that they were a masterpiece when it comes to befooling the unsuspecting innocent guy. It’s like if you can’t convince them, bullshit and convince them. Oh, and also for the flawless grammar (I give credit where it’s due mate). Not any more. Get your rhythm back!
Moving on, if you think trialing a device makes your opinion important, get a load of this – it doesn’t. WOM guys send out a LOT of trials to a LOT of bloggers and admins out there. So stop feeling puffed up and important.
I’m glad we agree on something – this phone is destined for blockbuster success.
