Say hello to Microsoft Office 2010

As Microsoft gets ready to kick off its Worldwide Partners Conference 2009, the web is buzzing with an onslaught of premature Office 2010 info that came raining down from a variety of places — not the least of which was the accidental early launch of the company’s Office 2010 microsite. Of course details have been surfacing steadily for quite a while now, but there’s no info like official info. The most noteworthy topic of interest surrounding this latest iteration of Office of course, is the introduction of Microsoft’s free web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. These cloud-based versions of Microsoft’s popular applications are positioned to be quite disruptive for the likes of Google Docs, Zoho and the rest of the SaaS productivity contenders. While companies like Google have a massive head start in the web-based productivity market, none have come anywhere close to approaching Microsoft’s reach in the space. Its reach, of course, is something Microsoft will certainly use to its advantage. But enough of that — hit the read link for all the Office 2010 video goodness you can handle.

    Web based versions sound nice but what I’m really looking forward to is a 64bit print to onenote driver so I can move to win7 64bit without any need to come back into a 32bit environment for school. I can take or leave the word, excel and powerpoint as it is. Between open office, google docs, and zoho there are lots of alternatives that can work well enough for me. Onenote I’m addicted to though.

    Google docs is very good already but people will most likely use web based word because its microsoft.

    Will it still randomly kill itself without saving? A free version doesn’t change the fact that it’s a minor turd.

    Is there a reason I’d use this instead of OpenOffice?

    Am I the only one that was hoping they would bring back the UI from Office 2003? This new layout is so inefficient when using shortcut keys.. its drives me nuts.. I hope they have an option to flip it back to the 2003 UI..

    Don’t go throwing names and mud around. Microsoft was the one you started using first. If anything I’m glad the competion came around. Hopefully this will show Microsoft at its best.

    Office 2010. Oh YES! Count me in. Even an early version can’t be as slow and such a resource hog as Open Office.

    As to cloud computing, me, I’m gonna wait for the mist to clear.

    Fingers crossed that the web-based version of word will work better in firefox than OWA does. I’m sceptical.

    I hope to see Azure & Office really come into bloom this year…
    I Want to see a subscription fee, so i can RDP into an AZURE Based Windows 7 desktop, with 25GBs of SkyDrive space, that serves me the fines/latest in Office 2010.
    Now i just need a tablet with a verizon data card, and I have my computer & files everywhere!
    Including, my office & win7 always being automatically patched, and upgraded… sweet!

    sushiburger,

    Once you familiarize yourself with Ribbon, you begin to understand it’s value. By using Word/PP/Excel 2007 at home I spent 1/3 of the time that I would otherwise waste in 2003 at work. Not to mentioned crippled and outdated OpenOffice or impotent Google docs.

    You’re right on! MS might even try to compete for the “The Worst UI” award (if such existed)…. and their Office 2007 UI is guaranteed to win it! The absolutely worst UI MS’s ever produced

    @MiniMe

    Maybe I’ve just never gotten use to it, but I use Excel mostly for work… and I would say that I use my mouse about 1% of the time. I’ve heard that for people who use their mouse a lot, it is a lot faster, but 99% of the time, I use shortcut keys or key sequences… and the ones on the new office don’t seem intuitive to me… Again.. maybe I just need to get use to it more…
