Palm Pre hacked to work on Verizon network, sort of
The fantastically blurry video after the jump shows the fruits of PreCentral forum member Cleanser’s labor, and Verizon fans will definitely want to check it out. The intrepid techie apparently managed to hack a Palm Pre, still exclusive to Sprint of course, and get it working on Verizon’s network. So far Cleanser has managed to get voice and SMS working just fine but he’s having a bit of trouble with data:
Only problem is that I can’t get data to work. Apparently webOS is checking to see if the device is provisioned or not before allowing a data session to take place. So my next step would be to somehow bypass this provisioning check.
So close, and yet so far. Cleanser also reports that it took a bit of convincing to get Verizon, now ‘open to all compatible handsets’, to add the device to his account. A bit of sweet talking seems to have gotten the job done though, thankfully. Hit the jump to enjoy the quick vid and keep those fingers crossed that he can manage to get data rolling soon.

I realize these things have to start somewhere. But, isn’t a Pre without data kinda useless?
this is the only time i can quote flava flav with a straight face….YEAAAHH BOOYYYY!!!!!
Not too bad. I have to admit, I was pretty critical of the Pre but it’s quite a nice little phone. It’s got some pretty nice features to it and it’s definitely going to be solid for a while. I don’t see it as an iPhone killer though.
Users already have Pre’s working on Cricket with evdo rev A data. No easy mass user solution yet though.
i’m not a Big Fan of The Pre Waiting For Sunday so i can Get My TOOOOOUUUURRR!
A Pre on Criket? Now that might be useful to me(assuming I didn’t have to pay and arm and a leg to get a non-contract Pre).
What would be funny is if all of a sudden when the pre is on verizons network the wifi gets disabled, the gps becomes crippled (extra cost) and the OS gets a special red fugliness.

Yea….And Palm will have another update to squash peoples hopes….
“What would be funny is if all of a sudden when the pre is on verizons network the wifi gets disabled, the gps becomes crippled (extra cost) and the OS gets a special red fugliness.”
Why do people keep making making these jokes when they’re not true? VZW no longer cripples GPS.
is verizon going to strip the PRE of all the great features and charge this guy more for WiFi and Web and Gps lol
Ross…it’s the same reason that ppl bash sprint relentlessly…they’re uninformed
Really, it’s 2009. There is no reason for something to be this blurry.
Can he somehow transform the pre into the iphone so it would be worth a damn, or maybe he could switch VZW into AT&T so that it no longer sucked balls.
So, you know how to hack a smartphone but you don’t know how to use a camera. Awesome.
Ha Ha!
You dumb ass!
Sometimes the trolls are just to hard ignore
Well the CDMA unlocking community is small at best, and I have been waiting with baited breath for this moment since before the pre’s launch. Keep in mind this is at this point a disjointed collage of hackers spread about the internet. Web OS homebrewing is in its infancy keep that in mind.
i give it 3 weeks till we find a work-around to make data connections work lol
The flashing part to get SMS and Talk on a CDMA handset is pretty easy. Whats stopping the data from working correctly is the sprint provisioning used to set up the users sprint data account. Its the one thing stopping us from fully flashing (web, text, calls, mms) many sprint hand sets.
I guess it was sooner then 6 months!
This much is pretty easy as DBurr said.. Most of Sprint’s newer WinMo devices have built-in Power Vision tools, you can’t set up just any connection and use it — and flashing WinMo devices are easier since the platform is scattered across multiple device manufacturers.
How do you hope to run on ANOTHER CDMA network in the US?? If it was for another international network.. maybe… come one, Verizon though.. what a waste of time.
“I want to spend more to run my PRE on another network with the same CDMA technology!!”
LAMO
I purchased the Palm Pre On Friday(7/10/09).
I charged the device via the USB and the next morning the device would not work, the screen had small hairline internal cracks(Based on other post i believe this to be a heat issue!!). Sprint has refusesed to address the issue.
This issue is well documented all over the Web (Google “Palm Pre screen cracks”) you will find many post on the palm Web site.

I’m letting you know this as you have given the Pre a prior review.
Please get this word out!!!
