BlackBerry Onyx with optical trackpad is all smiles for Mr. Blurrycam

We’ve been saying that this would be the case for as long as we can remember, but today a new photograph has emerged which lends irrefutable evidence to our long-standing claim. The BlackBerry 9020, for now known by its codename Onyx, will be shipping out retail-style with an optical trackpad in lieu of the trackball. Based on the photograph above it’s impossible to tell if what we’re looking at is a late prototype or an early production unit, but seeing as the Onyx has already begun its factory journey we certainly can’t rule the later out. Mmmm, optical goodness.

Thanks, Nan!

Hmm… I think I like the look of the Onyx better with the track pad. I wonder if the tuh tuh tuh tour with wifi will also get a track pad upgrade.

I agree…same old thing with a couple upgrades. I know blackberry still owns the market but its been 2 full years since the Iphone came out and they still haven’t had any UI that can compete.

Excuse my ignorance, but how does this compare to the Blackberry Driftwood? From what I’ve read, Driftwood is also rumored to be out in September?

@Phil: If I’m not mistaken, the Driftwood is T-Mobile’s version with AWS 3G and its WiFi UMA-enabled.

    Hope its out on AT&T.
Most of the new BB’s have been going to VZW.
All AT&T got was the 8900. Nice device, but come on….

@Jeremiah: Thanks! For some reason I thought the Driftwood did not include the optical trackpad. Good to know. I’m trying to hold out from grabbing the 8900 in lieu of the Driftwood.

Wow. Another blackberry with another goofy ass name that is the exact same as the one they will have released 3 months prior on another carrier and a different (probably) even worse codename.

at least half of AT&T’s new accounts are iphones, they don’t really care about new BB’s. ZDNET ran a story a few days ago that in June the iphone outsold blackberry
