webOS 1.1 on its way to Palm Pre; Exchange enhancements, security and apps to be focus?
Following some big announcements from Europe earlier this week, it looks like Palm Pre owners on this side of the pond have some good news to look forward to as well. Word on the street suggests that Palm is prepping to unwrap webOS 1.1 within a month or so and the focus will be better positioning in the enterprise market by way of Exchange Active Sync enhancements and improved security. Rumored updates include:
- IT-initiated remote wipe
- Required PIN
- PIN complexity (numeric or alphanumeric)
- Device wipe after a certain number of failed PIN attempts
- Auto-lock after X minutes of inactivity
- Improved digital certificates
The Pre may also receive a number of new applications to coincide with webOS 1.1 hitting the scene, though it is unclear whether these new apps will be Palm-built or third-party additions to the App Catalog. So what say you, Pre owners — looking forward to the update or are there other features Palm appears to be holding off on that you’re waiting for?

apple is guilty of releasing buggy products but it’s like palm released this when it was still beta

Wrong priorities. Get right the hardware, and then bother about security. Heck, blacberries need security not teenage oriented gadgets. Finding out about a 1-night-stand isn’t exectly the kind of thing that needs layers of security on it
Wrong – Palm desperately needed this or they’d be in the same boat as Android. Totally shut out of the enterprise market.
Without working EAS security a large number of companies simpley won’t even bother looking at the device.
I have a eval Pre now and until we can enforce EAS it’s not being approved for use.
That’s why in all the Internet videos they wouldn’t let anyone touch it. They stayed very basic.

These updates seem great, but I think all Pre owners are really wanting some activity in the App Catalog. I switched from the iPhone to the Pre and have to admit it’s a little depressing to see all the new apps being released for the iPhone and then realizing that the SDK hasn’t even been publicly released for the Pre yet. How long will we have to wait? I am tired of seeing 30 apps in the catalog…
@JoeTour
Its spelled ‘exactly’ and Pre is not a teenage oriented gadget.
Excuse me? I own a BlackBerry Bold and I’m only 13. I don’t use the BlackBerry Enterprise Server; I use the gmail, facebook, and myspace apps. I have to say I don’t use the BlackBerry to its fullest potential but for what its worth I use it for everything it can offer me. The best part; unlike WinMo and standard devices my BlackBerry can’t be hacked to get into my personal data. I have sisters who are obsessed with my text messages and they can’t get into my phone’s texts since they don’t know the password. I agree my teenage romances are not nearly as significant to the rest of the world as the highly confedential data stored on most enterprise BlackBerry’s but for me this BlackBerry is really awesome! So to all of you who say BlackBerry’s aren’t teenager oriented but for what they are; they are very appealing to teenagers.
^ Rohan has to shake out whatever is in his a$$.
cause the pre is a toy when comparing security features against the bb.
Well its not a toy and it will be more secure than the blackberry…
The Blackberry needs a OS overhaul now that webos is out.The Tour is a bigger curve….

Yeah ok..maybe you want to do a little reading…see link

I love the phone, but they need to address the basic’s first. Battery, sluggish performance at times, slow email functionality when you’re dealing with email on a BB level. Once those are addressed (especially the battery), then getting it up to par on the corporate level would be the next step. Having a phone that addresses security and solid email, but dies out after a couple of hours due to usage and crappy reception and coverage defeats having a phone at all.
The nice thing though is that Palm is trying to pump out updates as fast as possible. Gotta give them a ‘A’ for trying.

why you guys gotta make this about RIM.. palm is making their product better – good for them
Way to go Palm. I went from a Blackberry Curve to the Palm Pre. I don’t really have any regrets.

agreed..I wonder why palm doesn’t let the likes of samsung and HTC use their operating system?
that would be awesome
Man I want my on board screen already on my PRE and more Apps would be nice too, but its still great device
Am I the only one who wants a decent file manager?
I left my iphone for the pre and I’m quite happy with my decision when the apps come it will be the most complete phone. I bought the extended battery and my battery now last from 9am to 10pm, with the stock battey it would only last 9 to 6, so its a big improvement
O yea sprint service is amazing here in nyc.
love the phone but getting bored with 30 USELESS APPS
@ JoeTour Yea I heard all the cheerleaders and cool kids are checking their phones for synergy and multitasking.. Get real more business people use the Pre than the Tour.. And when you reply and say the Tour isnt out yet.. Ill reply and say my point exactly.. Web OS is better suited for business than the iphone or android was this early on..
I read a review in which the point was made that the Pre actually was more of a threat to Blackberry than to the Iphone because of its business potential. I don’t miss my Blackberry at all.
Wow I forgot I did had a bb for a second…well yea I love my pre still
These updates will bring the end user experience (from a security perspective) of the Pre in line with WM6.1.
Otherwise, with flag syncing, universal inbox, automatic global addressbook search, and unintrusive mail notifications, the Pre mail experience has been awesome. I do occasionally have hiccups with EAS, so hopefully this will fix it. I’m excited for the security updates.
I anxiously waited for the Pre…..got one, I liked the phone….I was obsessed with keeping all the smudges off the front of it. I actually kept a towel in my desk and car just to clean it! Anyhow, after two weeks and bored with the minimal apps I took it back. I could not believe how big the keyboard on Moto Q was after using the Pre’s!
