Purplera1n comes to OS X, washes away third-party multitasking limitations

Do you have an iPhone 3GS and a burning desire to fire up Backgrounder but no access to a PC? Well dry those eyes Mac addicts, as Geohot’s baby is now ready to go on OS X. Cohorts AriX and westbaer helped Geohot pack purplera1n into a tight little Mac OS package and it’s now available on the site alongside a new and improved RC2a version for Windows. Sweet. Standard disclaimer: we’re not sure how purplera1n and the ensuing jailbreak will affect your iPhone as new OS builds come out, so proceed with caution.

so uhh… what does this actually do? why would you need access to a computer to enable third party background support?

Apple doesn’t support/allow applications to run in the background so you need to jailbreak the phone so that you can install apps such as Backgrounder. Purplera1n was only available to Win x86 os’s at first. RC2 included Windows 7 and x64 builds. Now a Mac app is available to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS.

Backgrounder is nice, but I really don’t see why apple couldn’t just make it happen for real. It should be the consumers choice to kill their battery. I mean the battery doesn’t last a whole day anyway after lite usage so I really don’t see the issue apple has.

Not sure which CPU your running but if it’s a PowerPC, could be part of the issue. As for the windows version, if you’re on vista or windows 7, make sure your right click the app and run as administrator. Hopefully that helps.
