Enhanced Gmail Plug-in for BlackBerry currently in the works
If you’re a Gmail user with a BlackBerry this is going to be a proud moment for you, no question. It’s ok to admit it — we’ve all shed a tear or two when thinking about just how poor Gmail integration is on the BlackBerry platform. Read status doesn’t sync, no access to folders/tags and so on. Dry those eyes though, BlackBerry fans, because it looks like RIM is finally planning to start cooking with gas. Rumor has it the Canadian company is hard at work on an “Enhanced Gmail Plug-in” that will add various functionality to Gmail integration. Rumored functions include:
- See your Gmail based emails in Conversation View for simple topic management
- Add and remove labels and stars to emails to keep inbox organized
- Archive and report as spam actions for mailbox management on the go
- Search your entire Gmail inbox
The plug-in is being beta tested right now internally and amongst a lucky few outside the company. Mmmmm.

yes! TOUR!!!
yes! 6 more days!
It be better if they had an Android Blackberry in the work, ya think?
Google has been a joke! I put in for an invite six months ago, still waiting!
Hasn’t read status synced since BIS 2.6?
am i the only one who can do this with the gmail app on my BB?
this would be amazing – the gmail app is weak, yeah it works, but not very efficiently. this is imperative for RIM – so many Gmail users have BB’s, and even though Android is still in its infancy, the Gmail/Google connectivity could prove a blow to RIM if it doesn’t have a sufficient response.
cant wait!
This will take care of one of the major complaints I here voiced about the Blackberry platform.
I hope this isn’t an early beta.
what about contacts? will it look up previous contacts like BES?
I guess this applies only to the Gmail App. The BIS email you get has the same standard for all email accounts, yahoo, gmail etc. Zach?
This is obviously not for the Gmail App for the blackberry since almost all of the above features have been available on the BB Gmail app for a long time already.
This must be talking about integration into bb email messaging.
I can really see the tour being an epic failure once all the people that buy it realize it does all the same shit as the BB they already have!
whooo hooo!!! cant wait for my Tour as it will be an Epic Success! especially with the Gmail
This is good to hear! There has been spotty gmail “syncing” report for some time now. My Bold with sync the messages I have read on my device to my inbox. But the mail I read via Gmail web will not get marked as read on my BB. It’s those basic functions that you always take for granted until you move to a device that no longer has them!
Not completely. It does sync read status from BB to web, but not vice versa: opening an email on BB shows as read on the web, but opening an email on the web does not mark the email read on my BB.
We’ve all been waiting for this for a long time; I can’t wait until it’s finally ready!
@Maverick
I am not sure about your point? It is my understanding that the BB Tour is the same BB system with an updated keyboard, faster processor, better screen, etc. when compared to the BB Curve or BB 8830.
If you are compairing BB to Android, the iPhone, or the Pre than you may have a point, but you seem to be forgeting that it is VZW that is offering this phone and there is no other choice on that network….. yet.
(note: I know Sprint is offering this phone as well, but I would wager that the majority of BB Tour fans reside on the Verizon Network)
I will be dropping Blackberry if this doesn’t happen by the end of the year. I think RIM is falling behind and I am upset with their latest offerings. Storm sucks big time, I know, I have had one since it came out.
I just don’t get the excitement around Tour? Isn’t it *almost* the same phone as all the recent BBs with just slightly better hardware and memory? The OS gets a marginal update at best. It still can’t render a webpage, app support will still be lacking, and the UI will just get an updated theme. I love bbs, but I’m tired of the endless minor hardware and cosmetic updates with no improvement to the OS. I plan to hang onto my 8830 until January when I hope the Pre comes to Verizon. If it doesn’t, I’ll upgrade to Tour.

2 degrees, want to go to law school, and raising a small child while holding a “good” job and you still Troll here.
Simply amazing!!!!
FYI the Tour is a fairly big upgrade from the 8830 for us CDMA guys. Definitely bigger than the upgrade from the Iphone 3G to 3Gs.
Oh, and I don’t own an Iphone or BB
PS
Bell, Telus, and Verizon are going to sell a lot of these devices.
and
I wouldn’t bother with the Lawyer thing. Like they need another a$$hole in their midst.
Sweet! I want!.. I dont’ know why it’s so difficult to just allow Gmail in your Message app, but use a different color to differentiate between work and Gmail. Currently i’m just using the Gmail app, I don’t like the integrated gmail support at all. no biggie having to go into seperate app, especially since I have it hotkeyed.
The tour still doesn’t have wifi because verizon wants to cripple the consumers capabilities.

hopefully RIM launches this publicly soon!
I think the tour has no wifi because it’s targeted at businesses with security in mind

I think this will be included with the release of the 5.0 operating systems which includes Google Gears. Not sure if Gears will be includes with the Tours at the time of release.
