Enhanced Gmail Plug-in for BlackBerry currently in the works
If you’re a Gmail user with a BlackBerry this is going to be a proud moment for you, no question. It’s ok to admit it — we’ve all shed a tear or two when thinking about just how poor Gmail integration is on the BlackBerry platform. Read status doesn’t sync, no access to folders/tags and so on. Dry those eyes though, BlackBerry fans, because it looks like RIM is finally planning to start cooking with gas. Rumor has it the Canadian company is hard at work on an “Enhanced Gmail Plug-in” that will add various functionality to Gmail integration. Rumored functions include:
- See your Gmail based emails in Conversation View for simple topic management
- Add and remove labels and stars to emails to keep inbox organized
- Archive and report as spam actions for mailbox management on the go
- Search your entire Gmail inbox
The plug-in is being beta tested right now internally and amongst a lucky few outside the company. Mmmmm.

First we hear about threaded SMS coming up, no we get coversation view with Gmail, which seems like threaded email to me. It seems to me like blackberry is going to eventually roll all the various messaging forms into the Blackberry messenger app. One place that does BBM, SMS, MMS, IM, and Email. Nothing has been said about any IM changes yet, but to me this seems to be the way the wind is blowing.
Like others, I’m a little confused by what this article is stating about read status. I don’t use the current GMail app, so maybe the current version doesn’t mark read messages.
While the other features coming out might be useful, the read status won’t be anything new. My Blackberry syncs fully with my Gmail just fine, and has been since Google and RIM integrated IMAP functionality with the BIS service many months back. I read my emails from my Blackberry and no longer have to go on Gmail to mark them as read. And when I read them from the web, I don’t have to mark them as read on my phone.
Yes, Google’s sync client isn’t always as reliable, but I can deal with checking it myself once a week.
Just give me true two way sync, please. I love my Tour a lot, but definitely do *not* love having to delete from my Tour every single message I’ve already read and deleted at my computer.
Did this ever get resolved? I delete messages on my computer and then have to delete them all again on my Blackberry…..help!
