Apple orders up a ton of cameras, rumored to hit the iPod
Considering how much Apple loves to tout the iPhone 3GS’ video capabilities in TV ads, this rumor makes plenty of sense. One of TC’s sources in Asia claims Apple has ordered a tremendous number of cameras — the kind that go into the iPhone — and that an order of this quantity can only mean one thing: iPods. If the cameras are really intended for iPods and the iPod touch gets video recording capabilities, low-end digital camera manufacturers and specialty companies like Flip might have a bumpy road ahead. Sure the photo/video quality in an “iPod touchS” wouldn’t be anywhere near comparable to a dedicated device but what does that matter? Novelty beats out quality all the time in this day and age.

Would not be surprised to see this come when the Zune HD comes out.
i have an old camcorder, a digital camera, two iphones and two blackberries between my wife and I.
these days we just take our iphones and work blackberries with us to take pictures and videos. No one complains that they aren’t as good as the kodak digital camera. they’re good enough.
too much hassle taking the digital camera with us and we only use it on special occasions now.
I have to agree with Alen, I don’t have a BB, but my 3G S works just fine for pics and videos I put them on you tube so that my wife’s family in Vegas can see our son. if anyone wants to see the video quality my channel is maverick713x all the videos posted there have been taken with my 3g S
u have just got to admire apple and all of the products they come up with. damn they strike gold yet again
As long as they are priced nice, I will have a 32gig day 1.
As long as cell phone cameras continue to take decent photos and videos who cares? One will always have a dedicated device for those special moments and places, but for convenience a cell phone camera is good enough. (3.2 MP amd above)
mrhopkins78: With all due respect, they didn’t really come up with much. Most of the things developed for the (presumably) iPod Touch seem to be fairly interchangeable with the iPhone.
What they did was realize that they should start putting some more of the shit from the iPhone into the iPod. Not that I’m belittling that; I’m not. I’m just saying it’s not an entirely new product.
That said, I don’t need my camera phone pictures to be amazing, but I do want them to be a hell of a lot better than the average one currently is.
The 3.2MPX camera in my Touch Pro is not sufficient. I need at least 5, with a halfway-decent lens and, preferably, a flash.
That type of camera, unfortunately, does not exist in a QWERTY CDMA smart phone. I guess I’m just the pickiest person alive.
Love Sprint but I hate AT&T, like M$ but I don’t like Apple too much but I’m getting this next gen iPod Touch. (Traitor?) With my Sprint MiFi & Skype with the new gen iPod Touch, I’ll be unstoppable.
Screw an iPhone 3GS lol!
for some reason (milk the iSheep) Apple is trying to slow technology down…
Yes, you are all so incredibly right. I especially like how I can only take pics until sundown. I sure hope nothing funny that should be caught on camera happens after 8pm, else I’ll just have to rely on memories for those times then.
Nerdherder said it right… you use your camera for ’special moments and places’, while the other is just for those spontaneous moments. I would never ever go on vacation or go to an event and rely on a camera phone.
Oh, and still not buying an iPod regardless.
No Orga… you are not the pickiest person alive, you just have standards like some of us.
Some people like Big Macs every other god damn day… I’ll go home a grill a steak instead, thanks.
Marc’s last line, from my interpretation, was more of a sarcastic lament rather than an affirmation of what’s acceptable. I could be wrong though.
I would consider this. I’m thinking of getting an ipod touch now.
Quality Please: Glad to know I’m not alone when it comes to knowing exactly what I want in a phone. Let me add either a Snapdragon processor or the Tegra chipset and at least 256MB of RAM to that previous requirement. To recap:
-Snapdragon or Tegra at the heart
-At least 256MB of RAM
-Huge storage not necessary, but microSD expansion to 32GB
-3.5mm audio jack (I won’t use it, but I want it)
-CDMA QWERTY Smartphone
-AMOLED touchscreen of at least 3″
-WinMo 6.1 w/TouchFlo 3D (update to 6.5/7)
-At leat 5.0MPX shooter with quality lens and real flash
I think that’s everything. I’m also 99.9997% sure that this phone does not exist, and never will. It’s nice to dream, though…
veks: I can’t seriously consider the Touch until they put some serious storage in there. It’s too bad, but I guess the Touch is too pretty to have its attractiveness marred by significant storage capabilities.
I mean, I’d be willing to pay the premium to get
This i’ll definitely snatch up . I know it won’t be replacing my dslr anytime soon but itl definitely come in handy for those out of the blue moments .
it’s amazing how apple can keep their specs just under spectacular and yet deliver so much functionality on the software side. more so than any other company i’ve seen.

If it doesn’t have flash support. I’ll pass. I don’t give a crap about a camera. I have enough products with cameras on them. I’ll be getting the Zune HD, which just watch microsoft throw a camera on that too, if apple does this. :X
@ Orga: my bad it was early and I was sleepy but i meant to deliver more sarcasm in my post. To own something Apple is so trendy right now and if they’re gonna put a camera in ipods….well guess what everyone is gonna want for christmas. can’t wait to see how many choppy @$$ youtube videos this is gonna produce!
@Ethan,
Too late for ms to add a camera to zune

Yes, because so many other MP3 players have cameras. o_O
I wish people would realize that blind hate is just as senseless as blind devotion. You mock the “iSheep,” but you’re just. like. them.
@ orga: I understand where you’re coming from about storage capabilities, but for me personally I’m picky about the music I listen to. My 2nd gen ipod is 20gigs and I’m only using 10. Applications I would need to demo and I don’t think that will fill up 32 gigs for me
I just hope that Apple will write in a lot better YouTube and other media site integration a little better than they have right now… Or offer a MobileMe solution for just iPod Touch customers… I think that if they want to show to true potential in this device and in the 3GS, they’ll make the ability to upload to numerous sites more convenient. Currently, you can only email, MobileMe, or Youtube…

@Alan,
Too late? How? The Tegra chip has support of 12mp and there has only been a couple Zune HDs the world have been seen and they’re aren’t the final product. With Microsoft not having anything leaking with a full on spec list, I don’t know what to expect. That being said I hope you are right that it’s too late for them to add a camera. I don’t want a mp3 player to have a camera on it.
what is up with the Zune HD. I had a few zunes in my time, but im going to tell u, it may have good quality, but it will lack features, lets face it all zunes have a really basic Firmwire. Nothing against microsoft, but when it comes to media players apple has them beat, but they did do a good job with the 360 lol
