Geohot releases his own iPhone 3GS jailbreak

Deciding that waiting around for the Dev-Team to release its iPhone 3GS jailbreak solution is for chumps, original iPhone unlocker Geohot has released his own jailbreaking method, with the help of chronic dev and a few others, that he has dubbed purplera1n. Best. Name. Ever. As it stands, purplera1n only supports Windows rigs (Windows 7 and 64-bit excluded) but OS X support is on the way. Hit the read link to grab a copy of purplera1n and get all the instructions you’ll need to get your Cydia fix on. And happy jailbreaking!

P.S. We’ve heard that ultrasn0w works, but it is a bit flaky for the time being.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I am new to the jailbreaking world. I want to purchase an Iphone and was waiting for the jb capabilities. But it is my understanding that if I break the phone with the current firmware in it I will have to also jailbreak and new firmware that I want to install. Is that the case because this will cause me to hesitate in getting the iphone given that Apple has announced the publication of a new firmware already for the iphone 3gs that will have some key features that I will need, like voice dialing over bluetooth.

Can someone provide me guidance on this matter

    Thanks

I read the site you directed me too and it provided great guidance and insight regarding pitfalls and potential hazards. But it did not speak to the exact question I posed above.

Can someone answer that question. thanks

Yes, william. If you JB on the 3.0 firmware, you will have to wait to upgrade to 3.1 until they have confirmed the JB for it. Of course you can still upgrade to 3.1, it just won’t be JBin

Why would anybody want to jailbreak their iPhone now? I mean other than been able to use any sim card, what are the advantages now? We lready have video capabilities and MMS any time now. What else can u do with a jailbroken Iphone?

you can customize your iPhone (background, icons, keyboard font and color)you can even have a video as your wallpaper. Apps are cheaper if not free. You can use turn by turn GPS. Plus tons of more cool features

@Brian: Don’t forget that there are also apps that Apple will NEVER approve for the App Store. That attitude is basically why I’ll never own an iPhone, but if I did, it would be jailbroken. I’m not going to let a company tell me what I can and can’t do with something I paid for.

The PurpleRa1n/Geohot 3GS jailbreak is missing critical patches required for WinterBoard (etc.), i.e. don’t install!

Also allows for tethering (been using it since 2.2.1, works great) and, lets be honest, for stealing a shit ton of App Store stuff.

3 Reasons to Jailbreak: 1) we need to jailbreak ’cause we like to use our China Mobile, Thai AIS, or SingTel SIMs so we don’t get raped by AT&T every time we roam outside of this country. 2) Maybe u have a TMobile account because AT&T’s coverage is crap! in your local area (like mine). 3) You want to put apps on your phone that the pc police at Apple don’t think are family friendly. Any more reasons?
