LG guns for Samsung; iPhone competitor, Prada III , Android phones and new high end brand all in the works

LG continues to prove itself as a force to be reckoned with and following a story from the Korean Yohap News Agency, it’s plenty clear that the handset manufacturer has no intentions of slowing down any time soon. LG’s head of Mobile Ahn Seung-kwon reportedly coughed up a hell of an interview with Yohap, during the course of which several tasty morsels came to light:

  • LG, currently holding the number three position where global cell phone market share is concerned, plans to slide into the number two spot by 2012. That’s two and a half years from now for those of you keeping score at home. Samsung — consider yourself on notice.
  • In Q4 of this year, LG will release a “Black Label” phone that will supposedly do battle with the iPhone. We’ve never heard that claim before of course, so we’re very excited to see what shapes up.
  • LG is currently working on the third iteration of its Prada phone, though no release timing was specified.
  • Smartphones are a particular area of interest for the company moving forward and it will focus on Windows Mobile and Android as far as OSes are concerned.
  • The company plans to attack the ultra high end market with a new premium line of handsets “similar to Toyota’s Lexus and Nokia’s Vertu”. We’re not sure how that will help LG in its quest for the number two spot in terms of market share but hey, at least BG will have a few more toys to play with.

Ok, deep breaths. LG clearly has its sights set high and the continued quality of the handsets it churns out is promising. At the same time, the manufacturer has yet to shine where innovation is concerned — something it will certainly need to do if it plans to make a real run at passing Samsung for the number two spot. Sweating yet, Sammy?

Black Label?? I dont think LG can make an competative OS like say Apple’s or Palm’s, but if they do come out with a Android Based handset I dont think it would be better than a HTC Android Handset. But We will wait and see for this “Black Label” phone.

It’s very easy to match the Iphone, however it is nearly impossible to match the app store, which is why people continue to favour the Iphone. Without the app store, the Iphone is nothing too special. My 2 cents.

Over the years I have bought a number of LG Phones. Some i have liked others meh. I don’t think I will buy another LG phone though I can’t really figure out if it is the LG phone I hate, or the fact that verizon keeps crippling all the features of the phones I buy.

i really don’t think lg has the potential of coming close to an “iphone competitor”. I’ve never seen a smooth, innovative os or hardware come out of them, all their products are mid to lower end. we’ll see tho.

Damn, Steve always with his -.02 We get it, you love apple/iphone. Competition is good for the market, it leads to more options and innovation. I’m not a fan of anything LG, but I hope they can make good on what they are saying. People need to realize that there is more out there than the iphone (which is starting to remind me of the razr craze, only worse!).

You know, the HTC Ozone might be considered a Tour competitor, or at least a BlackBerry one.

The first manufacturer to launch a hi-res, OLED, Tegra/OMAP/Snapdragon driven Android phone wins.

If that describes the Black Label, then LG wins.

My fiancee has an LG Lotus, first LG phone that anyone I know has owned. It has been the biggest piece of crap I’ve ever seen. Software and signal are alright but she’s on Lotus #4 now in a 6 month time period due to hardware problems. First 2 had screen issues, the inner and outer screens became all distorted and eventually stopped working and the last one started making a bad static noise during calls. Sprint knows it too, when phone #3 went bad they offered her an early upgrade so she could get something else, if #4 goes bad she needs to take them up on that offer. LG phone are junk.

When someone makes a phone with big processor, big CAPACITIVE screen, Android or?, lots of memory and runs it on CDMA, THEN you have an iPhone competitor. If Samsung was running Android and had ditched the resistive screen on the upcoming Omnia II, it would sell the living shit out of them on Verizon. Someone needs to step up! Toshiba?

I personally like LG phones. And I havent had any problems with the ones I’ve had (Versa, Vu, Wave). But they are pointed more towards teens. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. Im tired of th iPhone.
