HTC Hero passes through halls of FCC, comes out with stamp of approval

Right now at BGR headquarters, one of the phones on our “want list” is definitely the HTC Hero — especially after checking out all that delicious HTC Sense UI goodness. After getting some of that typical Europeans-get-it-first jealousy out of the way, we were happy to hear the device is headed stateside later this year but the question remained… Which carriers would be scoring this bad boy? The government body partly responsible for making or breaking our gadget dreams, the FCC, has given the HTC Hero its stamp of approval for North America and the related filings indeed tout WCDMA 850/1900. Woo! Is the Hero AT&T-bound? Is it headed to Rogers? Maybe both? Hopefully we’ll find out soon but at least AT&T and Rogers subscribers now know to hold off on the imports since some 3G love is definitely headed our way.

    If this hits AT&T, quite simply I will switch to AT&T and get it.

    No question.

    I wonder if this means anything for Sprint getting this in Q4, since they acknowledged an Android device for this year. Otherwise ill assume that they need a seperate filing for the Hero.

    Later this year? When and why if the device is already functional does it always take so long to arrive? We see the demos and then 4 months later it shows up. What gives?

    Looks like this will be my next phone, then. I’d rather have a Galaxy, but unless Samsung suddenly announces a version that does 850/1900 3G, this will have to do. It’s nicer than the Dream and Magic, at least.

    awesome, I wonder what color the states are getting. I don’t think this is an iphone killer but its the closest thin so fae in my opinion. And since it will be out later this year,hopefully. It will be running android 2.0.

    I’m amazed this could be coming out for AT&T, but it makes sense, considering T-mobile USA is still a month away from launching the Magic…if they announced another Android phone so soon, it would affect Magic sales.

    @Castro

    WCDMA = 3G speed (3.6/7.2Mbps), essentially state of the art right now

    LTE = 4G speeds (50+Mbps). Carriers should start rolling it out in 2010/2011/2012.

    I gues Tmo people will have to wait for the Tungsten. It would have been nice to get this Android bad boy. I wonder if this will have the “rosy update or Android 2.0.

    I would love this phone if it had a more capable processor. The transition effects, zooming, and the whole os is rather slow and choppy, and it doesn’t offer much than my iPhone 3G S has. If only htc could’ve moved on past their crappy little Qualcomm processors and put Tegra in this than it easily would have been my next phone. Ah well.

    Finally! 3G Android for AT&T!! I love the Samsung I7500 with the AMOLED screen but I don’t see it having 850 or 1900 3G bands anytime soon or ever. Even though some of you will get your thrills dumping on this phone…I’m pumped!

    @zach – slow and choppy? well, if you saw the clip of SENSE on someone’s G1 then yes but straight up on the Hero, nope.

    @ zach

    What part of the Hero and Sense UI are slow and choppy? Have seen Sense running on an ACTUAL Hero, or were you looking at a Rosie ROM? The Hero is nothing remotely close to slow.
