Unofficial iPhone OS 3.1 change log

Last night we told you that iPhone OS 3.1 beta was released to developers and we’re pretty sure each and every one of them has had a pretty long night of playing, err, working with the new OS. Thankfully however, one anonymous tipster took a break from getting his or her 3.1 on to send us a quick breakdown of the changes so far in this build:
- Options for MMS are back on AT&T, but not sending or receiving.
- Non-destructive video editing means trimming a clip no longer saves over the original video but gives you the option to “Save as copy…”
- Voice Control now works over Bluetooth
- iPhone vibrates when moving icons
- Updated AT&T profile to 4.2
- Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01
- Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz
- APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them
- You can now paste phone numbers into the phone app’s dialer. This wasn’t possible under 3.0
- While pasting phone numbers, a neat feature is that it will convert alphanumeric phone numbers into a real phone number (e.g. 1-800-FLOWERS becomes 1-800-356-9377)
- Calendar appointment popup notifications now display the “Location” field from the calendar entry
- Ability to save video attachments in emails to your camera roll
One item we notice to be MIA from the listed changes is a fix for the widespread squealing issue we broke last month. Considering Apple’s refusal to comment on the matter, perhaps the company is just hoping everyone forgets about it. Then again, maybe Cupertino will swoop in under the radar and sneak a fix past us in the release build. Yeah, we hope the latter is the case — and our ear drums hope so, too.
Thanks, Jeff / The iPhone Blog!

I know this is slightly off topic, but I have not been able to update my iPhone from my computer since 2.1. I’m using an xp laptop, newest build of iTunes, xp has all of it’s updates including sp3. I use an AT
Gay, it cut my message off. I was trying to say that I also use an ATT connect card and I’ve read that’s the reason I get stuck at “verifying iPhone software”. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Imagine, Apple adds a couple new features like copy and paste, video editing , mms , voice recording to name a few that have been around for so many years and they call it a new Operating System. What a fcuking joke.
Soon they will claim they invented these features. If its one company out there that have mastered the art of misleading the public about their products. Its apple.
What a load of crap.
All your baseband are belong to us.
OK, I had to say that. Sorry.
I agree with @AcidBurNZ. AVRCP is a MUST. I’d love to get a set of Moto S9-HDs, but not if I can’t skip tracks with them.
@Alvin
Yes, these features were in other phones a long time ago… However, those were all PHONES first. Apple took an operating system built for computers and ported it to a phone. As the Palm CEO said before the launch of the iphone, no one expected Apple to just walk in and beat the players who have been doing this for years. I think Apple did a fine job… And now that Safari has SMIL, guess what… iPhone has MMS. I wonder if there’s a corrilation there…
Is there anyway to change the color of the calendars you subscribe to on your iphone? It automatically assigns colors which make it hard to tell calendars apart when you are looking at the “ALL CALENDARS” screen. Just wondering.
IPhone 4.0 coming after summer.

I second the “fuck you” to those that take time out of your day to hate on a phone that you don’t have and don’t understand. Especially you 5th. Congrats on being the first, useless jackass to waste your time.
You suck donkey balls harder than any cell phone ever could.
@hopefloat,
As much as I’d like to believe you, do you have any sort of proof?

hardware not on the 3G S to do this. Keep dreaming.
Animated4life said (Does anyone know if the new update fixes the yellow tint problem that many users are experiencing?)
I know how to fix the yellow tint problem, just get a black 3G S or get a case for the phone.
Aleic Said: how about a fix for the annoying sms sound issue that still exists !!!!!!!
have u tried lowering the volume?
after all that is said and done, the iphone is not a phone for multitasking.
Evilhomer really has a problem with anyone who questions the mighty iphone! What a silly little boy!
Wow, a rumor of 4.0…a whole new phone or just software?Make it pink, the middle school gitls will love’m even more! I’m sure homer will get all gooshy inside when he gets his pink one!
Does anyone else love how the 3G isn’t even a year old and already Apple has forgotten about it? I suspect that this new update is really only for the 3G s since I have seen no news on what it will do for the 3G. I tested the beta software for 3.0 and it was just not that exciting. My 3.0 final version works fine, not any more or less buggy than any other OS the iphone has had (user since the 1st gen.) Unless they are giving me a video camera (and yes they can do that on a 3G, if some guy in his basement can make a camera app for the iphone I am sure apple can too,don’t tell me its a hardware issue the new camera is only slightly better and works like most video cameras shoots in FPS, all they do is make it shoot at a low FPS than the 3G s, sorry for the rant, but it is totally possible and feasible.) or voice command, I just don’t see the point in this update, or a reason to get excited about it, frankly 3.0 was a big let down. I use my phone constantly all day for calling, ipod, and internet and the battery life always lasts me just fine, so if they give me a schpeel about increased battery life I dont care either. If any of you stayed to finish this whole thing I commend you, I just had to rant. I really hope the Pre comes to AT&T, that phone is amazing, and for all you iphone lovers, go pick one up and play with it, its a solid device that does everything the iPhone can do, and things the iPhone couldn’t dream of.
@Scrofula,
you are a sad person it’s just a phone

The iPhone was first discussed with Verizon, who refused to divest themselves of marketing and sales control-to the extent that Apple demanded. So, no way will Verizon be offered a second chance. They refused once and Apple is unlikely to give them a second opportunity.
Since updating to 3.1 Beta 2, my Messaging just crashes when I try and open it, and Mail isn’t sending or receiving.
And I noticed that the iPod function to change the speed of an audiobook didn’t work on podcasts, but now does.
Also, when I posted a note on the Apple forums about my Messaging crashing problem, they removed it and sent me an email about it violating the terms of the NDA (which I didn’t bother reading).
I hope they stop updating the baseband.
What a bust. The one feature I really wanted does not work. Voice control over Bluetooth. I have Motorola HT820 Bluetooth headphones. They work fine except for voice control.
Apple sucks.
@Ariel Walse: This thread is ancient. You come today and all to say “Apple sucks.” Seriously?
Apple makes some fine computers. Where else will you find a 17″ WUXGA LED-backlit screen, DDR3 memory, a battery that lasts 38% longer than any other laptop on the market all in a laptop that’s STILL under an inch thick? Not even to mention the entire laptop is made on an aluminum chassis?
Name one, just one other computer that has a 17″ WUXGA screen with a 3.06 GHz processor and TWO video cards that’s under 1″ thick or even CLOSE to an inch thick?
So what, it’s expensive. So you hate it because you can’t afford it, is that it? Life sucks, get a helmet.
Mad mike. Couldn’t have put it better myself.
Ariel. Feel sorry for you.
On my 3.1 beta versions I had ability to stop the screen switching to landscape when I was in mail or messaging by opening them with the phone horizontal. Doesn’t do it in final 3.1 release.
