iPhone OS 3.1 released to developers!

We just got word from a couple tipsters telling us that Apple has posted iPhone SDK 3.1 as well as iPhone OS 3.1 for developers. While everyone was expecting a 3.0.1 update, version 3.1 seems to be here to stay. Let us know if you find anything interesting in the new build.

The 3.1 update (as it stands now) will allow tethering and MMS for AT
@BLacKuLa, it’s not about features like mms, or voice dialing homie, it’s about apple having the coolest f’ing operating system for a phone in the world. Google maps, iPod, app store, visual voicemail, accelerometer, best browser, best wifi device, iTunes, even setting the alarm on this sucka is hot. So please don’t compare the iPhone to a razor anymore, you’re just playing yourself.

Mms is already in the 3.0 build, ATT has to sweap through the millions of Iphone customers and enable the MMS on each account.
and again, lol @ latinjersey
Another fanboy. So spinning numbers around like a slot machine to set the alarm is hot? if you say so. And then again, who dont have google maps on there phone? Ipod? Creative is better. Itunes? Garbage. visual voicemail? Again, who dont have that. accelerometer, again, who dont have that either. Best browser? i dont think so, opera mini is the best. best wifi? please dont make me laugh any harder. You are talking like apple created all these technologies or something. Iphone revolutionary b/c its touch screen? Fail. Try again. It wasnt the very first touch screen.
As Willywill82 and he stand corrected. its mostly a pmp with a phone on it. Its not a smartphone.
* As willywill82 said and stand corrected.
I think that Safari could be better in terms of offering more features to organize BMs and it would be easy to DL stuff off it from links, but I have to disagree with Blackula, Safari, for the most part, is a superior mobile browser. IF there is a close second, it’d Opera.
Any idea how long this would be in beta before it goes public?
@ Blackula, scrofula, et al…
This should be a discussion of potential changes to the iPhone OS with the release of a new update. Period. Personally, I hope it addresses the reported heat issues.
How can we STILL be arguing about the iPhone’s features? It’s a tool, one of MANY different gadgets available in the commercial marketplace Don’t like it? Has anyone forced you to buy one? How can someone else owning one possibly upset you? Are you that concerned for their productivity? Why don’t you keep it to yourself – it could be your own very special little secret!
I honestly think all the time and energy spent bashing the iPhone is the most serious productivity problem these ranting anti-iPhone people have. I mean, how can you take advantage of all the features your phone has “SINCE TOTALLY LIKE FIVE YEARS AGO” if you spend all your time trolling for iPhone news?
Look, when you throw a rock into a pack of dogs, the one who yelps is the one that you’ve hit – and you’ve done nothing but yelp for three years straight. Clearly the iPhone has struck a nerve.
It’s getting…it’s PAST tiring.
I hope it will fix the Bluetooth Headset bug, not able to change Volume
@Lori;
what willywill82 said plus, if u are going to be typing a lot, then stick with a BB. Push email is another thing to consider. Iphone doesn’t have push email whereas BBs do. BBs can pretty much do everything iphones can do plus they have a physical keyboard and push email. And…u can change batteries incase u run out of energy through out the day, Iphone…not likely unless u have 20 minutes and an entire tool set from home depot handy haha. But the iphone does look much cooler and is easier and a lot more fun to use than BBs are…generally.
strange, my iphone has push email. i even had to turn part of it off because it was pushing too much of it my way
FYI. Yahoo email has always been push on the iPhone. You can also set other accounts to pull whenever you want. But if you need extremely basis text only email I suggest a blackberry like the tour. It’s like most blackberrys except it doesn’t have wifi.
On a side note… I googled around for free tethering and found a way that doesn’t involve jailbreaking or unlocking on att. You just go to tytube.net/att. Install the carrier update. I did it right from safari on my phone.

Once again BGR publishes a title and goes to sleep.
i can set my MS Exchange account on my iphone to push, it’s just annoying for too many folders.
this is where apps like TextFree come in. i can redirect critical emails/texts to another app
Thanks StevenGlansburg!
tytube.net/att worked great!
Why is it people keep saying 3.1 update is going to be MMS and tethering? The curent iPhone 3gs has both mms and tethering in Canada I’m not sure about the U.S. What I hope would be is some multitasking sort of like the pre’s cards. And a better power management and fixing the WiFi issue which has a hard time locking in to WiFi
@Number2: Well said. It’s stupid to keep complaining about features the iPhone didn’t have two years ago.
And for the record. Apple has never stated the features of the iPhone were revolutionary, just the hardware and OS. Never did they come out and say they invented MMS, BT, Voice Control, etc. They just revolutionized the way they are implemented.
@evilhomer
Good point. Most of the stuff is not new in the iPhone but the iPhone does it in a much better way. I have used many different smart phones but I have to say for web browsing and ease of apps nothing compares to an iPhone
@Ray: I was actually blown away by the cut and paste feature added in 3.0. I’ve used EVERY type of smartphone device on every platform and never had a smoother, easier to use experience than on the iPhone.
Many of the iPhone hating donkey on this site are the same one praising the Pre and excusing it’s lack of features as being a new device. They weren’t so merciful to the iPhone when it launched. There is a laundry list of things it won’t do but they are only biased toward Apple. If BGR or any of the staff post anything remotely negative about any other brand, they are called Apple/AT&T fanboys. It’s as if no other device on the market has any shortcomings except for the iPhone.
Jealousy breeds contempt. These haters can call us fanboys and Apple sheep all day long but I’ve been around a long time and there is NO bigger fanboy for fanatic than Blackberry users. They are the prime example of the pot calling the kettle black and the Palm Pre guys are certainly gunning for their spot.
@Maxpayne79: Why do you open your mouth just to respond incorrectly to a question? It’s obvious that you don’t own an iPhone or have a clue what you are talking about. The iPhone has several methods of push mail. EAS, Yahoo, and Mobile Me. You are either ignorant or lying. Either way, it doesn’t make you look too bright.
@Alen: You can set the Exchange account in iPhone to just push your Inbox. You don’t have to push ever folder. At least on 3.0 and 3.1.
@Ray: Unfortunately, AT&T has not provisioned the MMS or tethering on the iPhone so us U.S. users out dead in the water until sometime this summer. What the 3.1 does is enable the icon in the Messaging app that allows to take or attach a video or picture to send.
I want folders in my messages so I have the ability to save and/or store important messages. And the ability to send contact details (business card in Nokia speak) by mms. If I can do this and have missed it, can someone please point me in the right direction. Oh. And mms and tethering is already available on all 4 carriers in Australia. We had to wait till 26 June but it was worth it
@Evilhomer
many people might be unhappy with AT&T about that I assume, one more thing I hear people complain about in the U.S is the Dropped calls is that true? because I’ve never had anything like that here in Canada so the problem can’t be the iphone mos likely the network and location maybe? i’m surprised AT&T is so late for that simple technology (mms and tethering)the icon you are talking about is correct its in the message section, its in a very convenient place and very easy to use
Can I still not snooze a calendar reminder?
My bad….I CAN MMS contacts….somehow turned MMS off and disabled it…fixed now. Only one wish now. Folders to save SMS. For now anyway
