Sony to take on the iPhone; envisions a gaming device/mobile phone hybrid

Sony is reportedly considering (yet again) the development of a new hybrid device that will combine the gaming features of its popular PlayStation portable gaming device with the functionality of a Sony Ericsson mobile phone. According to Nikkei Daily, the quintessential PlayStation phone will be developed by a new project team to be assembled in July. Rumors of a “PlayStation phone” have come and gone for more than two years now… Maybe Sony is so tired of hearing them that it will finally churn out a PS phone to shut everyone up.

This has been attempted with devices such as the Nokia N-Gage and failed. The device already looks like a brick based on the sketches, not a good idea Sony.

How about Sony make a sweet phone with a with a sweet media player and finally sweet camera (I particularly like their point and shoot cameras). That would rock.

    @ StevenGlansburg

That would make too much sense. Why make one device for everyone to enjoy when they can simultaneously fill their pockets with assorted Sony gear while emptying their wallets.

*slaps forhead* OK Sony, let’s me say this nice. And slow, if you want to make a psp phone just take the psp go, add a phone to it, and make it touch screen and your good to go.

I sure they are putting a lot more thought to this possible divice. Maybe it will be able to play psp games? Maybe would be able to download them. I hope that this divice would be good. But the iphone is a popular divice because it trendy, with all it “apps”. And don’t to mention the games. This PSPhone would be a gamers phone… Not much else.

    Peter:

If it were just a matter of raw sakes, then the free Nokia phone my mother has would be the “king.” In other words, there are other concerns, such as revenue per device. If you compare the Curve’s price to the iPhone’s, you’ll note that though the Curve has an ASP of around $80, the iPhone (for the last quarter) was still at $200 (BOGO sales lowered the ASP for the Curve). So even if Apple sells fewer phones, they end up with more revenue. Conversely, when Apple sells more phones, like they will this quarter, well, the revenue gap is huge.

a… yeah, I think this is that old sketch from before as well. Just a mock up, not an actual design and b… why doesn’t Sony EVER listen to what consumers want?
Let’s see… people want affordable online gaming that appeals to all demographics and they decide to shoe-horn a BD player into Ps3 and make it more expensive than the competition. Ok.
A lot of us PSP owners want dual thumbsticks and they finally come out with a new PSP… that’s the same as the old PSP except it’s a slider. Ok.
And people been saying “PSP phone!” for years now and Sony completely skips over it with no forward thinking whatsoever. Wonder what lit their fire… Katamari on iPhone maybe?

Good job Sony. No wonder you post $1 billion loss in ‘08. It reminds me of an article I read about another company… they basically ran the company from board rooms and penthouse offices, a bunch of suits brainstorming over products THEY thought were good without actually listening to consumers. That company is known as Chrysler.

why does everything have to be VS. IPHONE???

iphone is garbage, there’s no keyboard, the ui sucks, touchscreen glass cracks easily, hence why there are 10000 iphones on ebay with cracked screens, there’s no flash, no front face camera, no multitasking, shitty 3.2mp camera, no mms, video recording sucks, no 1080p support, no video calling, its a piece of shit with an apple on it.

no tv out, no removable battery, no home screen, no removable memory, no insurance, expensive plans, bad network quality, and then apple has the nerve to string you along with minor updates.. the first iphone should have had everything the 3gs has.. they could keep the spec bump it makes a minor difference at best..
