Android-powered Nokia netbook to hit carriers next year
While less-than-popular crossover devices like the Internet Tablet line and the E90 pictured above might not be overly pleased by the news, Android fans may be excited to learn that Nokia is reportedly eying Google’s OS for a next-gen product. While Bloomberg is fairly certain that the outcome of Nokia and Intel’s efforts will be a new line of netbooks and/or smartbooks, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Daniel Amir takes things in a slightly different direction with the following statement:
In our conversations with ODMs, we have confirmed that Nokia is planning to enter the netbook market with a Google Android, ARM-based netbook that would be sold at carriers. Considering this market is dominated by the PC players, we believe Nokia could face an uphill battle to succeed in this market.
Considering we know for a fact that Nokia and Intel have been working on some new products, it seems odd that Nokia would enter uncharted territory with ARM as well. So yeah, we’re going to go ahead and keep the rumor tag on this one despite claims of confirmation because, well, you know. Stranger things have certainly happened however, especially where our friends in Finland are concerned, so it will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Could Nokia be preparing to enter an already-cluttered netbook market with multiple Intel devices and one or more ARM devices?

Sling noodles on the wall and hope some stick?
Hope this comes to VZ!
Tuh tuh tuh Tour!
Shhhh, still not going to catch the iPhone

Did I miss anything?
You missed “Why isn’t it running on an AMD chip?”
Why Android? Why not Maemo?
That looks like my old Psion (Mako)
Good catch Flick but here’s the best:
FIRST!
As for looking like the old Psion, yeah, E90 always had that sort of retro look but given all the other recent news about Android being ported to older HTC and Samsung devices, whoever posted can be somewhat forgiven.
Considering that nokia has been working on their own Linux OS (maemo) and Intel has their own Linux flavor in Moblin, which shares some similarities with Maemo, it is beyond unlikely that nokia would launch an android netbook over their own maemo OS. You should remove the “rumor” tag on this article and place the “BS” tag on it instead. simply. wont. happen.
Nokia doing ANYTHING with Android/ARM is a slap in the face to Symbian and Moblin/Intel. I wouldn’t count on this.
It would be cool, to see Nokia get into Android. Android is open source, so they could create whatever “Nokia” user experience they want on it (as HTC has done with the HTC Hero & Lenovo plans with the oPhone). Nokia could even replace Google’s services with Ovi services.
Android would allow Nokia to focus on great devices, apps & services (real revenue), while the OHA members & Android community share the development & support costs of the base platform.
android has garnerd more support than any of those other linux platforms and has a much brighter future than s60.. its possible
If this is true, it is good, because it diversifies its portfolio, just in case Android replaces Maemo and even Unbuntu.
I don’t actually believe it, but it’d be nice if Nokia negotiated with Google/Android/OHA to merge Android and Maemo. Since Nokia owns Qt from Trolltech, they have all the stuff to get apps created and spread across multiple platforms.
When you have big pockets like Nokia, you can do stuff like this.
Lol internet tablet and our genius iPhone crowd is already trying to compare it to their phones. they aren’t in the same market so don’t waste your time trying to compare them.
Can anybody other than GigaOm confirm this rumour that an analyst has speculated that Nokia will end up in the bed with Google?
