Sprint eying HTC Hero and an Android-powered 4G Samsung handset?

Now before you get too excited about this, Sprint subscribers, know that we have to throw some annoying words/phrases at it first. Rumor, possible, unconfirmed, skeptical, grain of salt and so on. Right then… According to PhoneNews.com, Sprint finally has Android positioned squarely in its sights. First up, the company is allegedly in the midst of testing the HTC Hero with a planned release toward the end of this year. While we haven’t yet heard any rumblings of a CDMA version in the works, it’s certainly feasible and tough to completely count out. Secondly, the blog reports that Sprint is currently testing an Android-powered handset from Samsung as well — the key here being this little guy reportedly sports WiMAX and CDMA. Could this secret Sammy be the tri-mode WiMAX/WiFi/CDMA handset we heard about earlier this month? We sure hope so.

    @ Celz, my company has plants in Elk Grove, IL and Tolleson, AZ and in both cases I did not have any service in either plant or company apartments. This was the case with different hand sets. I’ve had better luck with both TMO and VZW in both plants. When you drive on the I-10 from Phoenix to LA forget about getting a signal with Sprint…

    In Ill I have been all thru chicago, bolingbrook, joliet, romeoville (i believe).. I have always had a strong signal. And I when I drove from so cal to dallas it was fine the whole way.. No one has complete coverage and there are places on all carriers that miss but when it comes to coverage Sprint is right behind VZW and stronger in many places. Sprint tends to win in big cities and VZW in the country

    joe you still have sprint and we both know it sucks thats why your mad. I had sprint i couldn’t even send a pic message which is sad as hell and i live San Diego and sprint is not better than verizon and cali thats a dumb statement and sprint gives customer perks because their service sucks hands down, and the whole jd power and associates advertisements all over the internet is funny because they tied with verizon and verizon isn’t plastering all those dumb ass ads it’s funny.

    I’m not mad, I would get Verizon if I wanted to pay $40-50 more (BIS and unlimited text are included on Sprint) for almost the same thing I get with Sprint. Believe me I would definitely get it because I think they do have better service, however my point was that it’s not $50 or even $40 worth of additional coverage (around a 40% increase). If Verizon had a phone I really wanted I would consider it (Tour) but it looks like Sprint will get it around the same time. But the best part of this is, that even when I don’t get Sprint coverage, Verizon is there to roam on. So when people say they had Sprint and didn’t get ANY service, my question is how would VZW get coverage there? If they had it Sprint would roam on it.

    VZW isn’t advertising those JD Power West region results because it would mean they are admitting lowly Sprint is real competition, contrary to VZW’s CEO who pfft’ed his merry way when asked if they were worried about Sprint.

    @Stayfly, WTF? Sprint works just as well in Sand Deigo as VZW, hell my Internet was sure as hell faster. This was only 4 months ago.

    @ Joe, true. Unless you have on of those cheap flip phones or Nextel phones, it roams on VZW’s net so yeah, thats BS. Call it as you see it. Its a CDMA network & as long as both run on it, both will service on it, things get hairy the further north you go (Near Canadian border, CDMA network) VZW has a majority that area, Sprint will 1xrtt on the northern boarder.

    Anything further south, Sprint & VZW will roam one another.

    Don’t listen to fanboy drivel.

    I get strong 3G signal here in L.A and I travel a lot through out southern California and I never get drop calls. I also use Sprint’s turn by turn navigation and I never have any issues. I guess it all depends where you live.

    laz maybe you haven’t been on the i-10 between palm springs and phoenix lately… i have boats docked on the river in blythe so i’m always in between here (san bernardino) and there. service is great. i lose 3g once in a while but thats to be expected in the desert. between blythe and phoenix it cuts out but it isn’t horrendous.

    and between san b and LA its amazing, as all wireless should be in that area.

    VZW won’t get this phone. It is using WiMax as a 4G technology not LTE.

    It is very doubtful that VZW will be carrying a HTC Android phone this year or next. HTC Android handsets won’t be available until LTE roles out and VZW open access rules kick-in. {Reason: VZW still hates Google for their interference in the 700MHz auction last year.}

    nul4end says:

    I agree that Sprint will roam on VZW if there is no signal. The issue I had when I was on Sprint was that if you had even the slightest Sprint signal it would hold onto that or it would end up switching back and forth which killed battery life and caused missed calls.

    @ LAZ….funny u say you get no signal with sprint…i live in so cal….and i go to phx twice a month….i get full service 80% of the time while driving on the 10 frwy there and back….and when im in phx….ive never dropped a call….i use my phone to the max everyday…..do not get me started on the fact that everyone has different experiences with carriers and that every carriers coverage is different…..sprint has been ranked in a tie with VZW in the western region and ranked #2 nationwide in the rest of the US….behind verizon….and is 2ND in fewest dropp calls….so do not say shit about there coverage….just becuz you get marginal service were u work….guess what buddy my friend has VZW….and roams at my house in orange county…..and dont forget VZW roams off sprints network…bcuz they both use the same network…just one company has a lil more coverage area…..get your facts str8….buddy
