Palm App Catalog cracks one million downloads

Eighteen days after the Palm Pre was released in retail outlets across the US, Sprint users have managed to push the Palm App Catalog past the one million download mark with 1,015,038 downloads as of yesterday. This means that for the 150,000 or so Pre handsets RBC analyst Mike Abramsky estimates Sprint sold thus far (official numbers have not been released by Palm or Sprint), each has downloaded an average of about seven applications and the average application has been downloaded roughly 33,800 times. These numbers are made even more impressive when the fact that only 30 applications are currently available in the App Catalog is considered. Remember, the SDK has to this date been available only to a select few and most of the applications found within are still in beta. Let’s also not forget that countless Sprint customers are still waiting for new shipments of the Pre which, as expected, has proven difficult to keep in stock. If all of Sprint and Palm’s ducks were in a row prior to launch (handset supply, open SDK, etc) just imagine where we’d be right now.

I’ve been using a Pre seed device all week and it’s a pretty slick little device. The screen is stunning. Not a fan of sliders but I’ve mostly just using it to test out the UI and stuff. If they put this OS on the BOLD it would be killer. Palm should license out the OS it’s very nice.

Now back to the OP topic.

If all 150,000 Pre owners downloaded all 30 apps it would be 4,500,000 downloads so unsure how the figure is “off”. As they grow the user base and open it to other markets they could in the same timeframe as Apple come to a pretty # of Apps downloaded (bearing they open the SDK and they get apps created!)

I’ve seen surveys where as much as 20% of iPhone users don’t even download apps so you could have users that download all the time and ones that could careless.

BTW the Pre food app is pretty nice.

150 000 units sold? only? I don’t own any of them yet but will eventually. Compared to the iPhone 3GS’ 1 Million units sold over a weekend, this news looks like a consolation tap in the back to me…

keep going kid, maybe Uncle Apple will let you play with the big guys one day…

“It even has VIDEO. Just one of the amazing NEW features on the new iphone.” Holy crap, it must be the best ever! Notice how every story about anything but ipoop brings the phans out? they loved the million number when it was a number reported about orders from apple. Then they poopooed the 2 million preorders for the sammy jet. Now when a million is tossed out about pre dls, they have a hissy fit as well.

I’ve seen a few in the wild, and played with them in the store as well as in the wild, an while I still think it feels a bit cheap, it seems to be very nice and very functional.

And do you like the way the screen crack issue was raised? Any bets on the phone out there with the most cracked screens?

What in the hell are you talking about? Try one for more than a day! The pre is a piece of shit! Aside from a horrible network, it is cheaply built, has an unfunctional keyboard and well….is a palm! I gave it the college try for a week and gave the pos up! Both my iphone and BLACKBERRY are far superior! Also, I vote celz toolbag of the year!

the keyboard isn’t great, but beats the virtual keyboard on some device you phans love. And you’re right, the network, in most markets sucks. Then again, ATT network coverage sucks too. The phans jump into every non-ipoop thread, raise issues and pretend the exact same issues don’t exist with their beloved toys. Cracked screens? ipoop!!! Yup, the pre is a palm, and a very nice one. Is it built like crap? Beats me, does feel a bit cheap, but plastic feels that way, whether it really is or not.

I think celz may be right…some of you guys might be shills!

Couldn’t give me an Iphone. Love my Pre. It’s everything I wanted in a smartphone and more. Tried the Iphone three times in store. Terrible. Storm. Terrible. It’s only going to get better with the Pre.

No one cares about the Pre. . .it’s off the radar everywhere but gadget blogs. It could’ve been a contender, but for supply issues, Palm’s history and crumbling financial status, 30 apps, the iPhone, RIM, etc. But it was THIS close. Sadly, with one million 3GS models sold last weekend, it doesn’t appear that McNamee’s prediction bore out. Bummer.

The wife is funny. She goes, “why are you reading this shit? You’re not gonna buy a PALM PRE!!” And she’s right. I’m not going to buy a Palm or anything on Sprint. Although I love the vibe on their commercials with the CEO. The music and all.

Ok, so it’s no BlackBerry or iPhone. But it’s cool! Palm has sucked for long! Then that stupid Centro came out, I mean, WTF was that??? This Pre is way better and if I wasn’t such a BlackBerry / Apple fan, I’d try it out.

My brother Alphonso Hernandez, also a lawyer but in Austin, got one and he loves the damn thing!

    @ Matt

That cracked me up when you wrote “your dumn.” Haha. Then you caught your error, one of them, and said dumb, not dumn. But you didn’t catch the part where you wrote “your” instead of “you’re.” Yeah, what is it they say about people who live in glass houses?

    @ F1

As long as this is, it’s nothing compared to those boring novels F1 writes.

All this means is that, out of all of the people buying Pres, they see a catalog of only 30 free programs that are all easily installable because they are all mainly web apps. So since there are only 30 choices, why not try them all? I mean seriously … if I was with a device that didn’t have very many software choices, and they were all free … I would go on a rampage and install all 30 just to try them out.

Limited selection forces people to download those apps. This doesn’t mean they were genuinely INTERESTED in any of them … it is just what is available.

    @ “scrofula”

You wrote that “Celz” is right – some of these people are shills.

Of course they are. I’m sure every phone maker and carrier has trolls who write in, pretending to be a regular guy, and pimp for their master, be it BlackBerry, Sprint, etc. Sometimes it’s transparent, sometimes not. That’s why I hate the anonymity of people like you and celz with your whack names. Who the hell are you? Who do you work for? Maybe *you’re* a shill… For reasons I’ll keep to myself, I highly doubt it.

I’m pretty sure “perspective” has a vested interest in Apple. He writes well, and regularly – and anonymously.

StevenGlansburg – is another regular, unusually articulate guy with always one point of view – Apple’s. Also always anonymous.

If the commentor provides a link to his/her website, probably not a shill.

I wish there were a way to banish the shills/employees. Wait, no I don’t, I love hearing what they have to say. I just wish they’d be up-front about their, ahem, perspective.

What the hell does scrfula mean anyhow?

I’m sorry but some of us just plain don’t have a choice in the matter here. Where I live, AT&T’s customer service rep flat out told me not to get their service because I will not have signal. So they’re out. T-Mobile – tried them for about 2 weeks and had service for maybe 2 days. When I say service I mean some kind of signal. I got nothing. Also, both AT&T and T-Mobile never were able to penetrate my office building in washington DC.

I live on a small island on the Chesapeake Bay and both Verizon and Sprint thought it was sensible enough to build small towers on the island. There’s one on each side. Towers that are small enough that nobody even knows they’re there. I have FANTASTIC service on both my Sprint work cellphone and my Verizon personal cellphone.

I am currently in the market for a new cell phone and would like to be able to upgrade to an unlimited plan with a phone that will take advantage of that plan. After doing the research there’s no way in hell I’m going to pay the amount of money verizon wants for their “unlimited” plan. Even after my 20% discount through work, it just sounds atrocious to pay that kind of money.

To me its simple economics: I also get special discounts at Sprint through my work. 20% off everything unlimited + Palm Pre for $99 after sprint mail-in rebate and $100 visa gift card for new customer sign up to Abound Systems(the sprint provider) + free Touchstone charger.

    What would you do?

I mean honestly, I can remember having cellular one/cingular 10 or 11 years ago and I could get service anywhere I went but it just seems like ever since they became AT&T the service area has gotten smaller and smaller.

I’m not a fan. Just stating the obvious. If the phone doesn’t have signal what good is it? If I can’t afford to pay for verizon’s not so unlimited plan why should I get it?

If I remember corectly the original Iphone didn’t have an app store. They waited till the 3G came out. So all you Apple fangirls need to shut the F up. Hey how is MMS working on that new(yea right)3GS????? Thats right you still can’t use MMS. How is that multitasking going?? Again you don’t have that on your new(he he he) Iphone. I just love how you idiots talk shit about the Pre and their app catolog. THE ORIGINAL IPHONE HAD NO APP STORE. Put down the Xbox 360 and get out of your parents basement. Come join the real world. @TimTim
Your right iPhone never had an app store upon release. But then again, nobody really did. Apple started on-phone app store craze. They were the first ones to make app downloading and purchasing a one click matter on the phone. After Apple did it, everyone else made the move to imitate and compete. App store is one of the features Apple innovated. Before that, we had web pages like handango that were one stop shops that required the desktop and transferred apps via another process. Not very convenient compared to what we have now.

Multitasking is a very minor thing. With my BlackBerry I limit the number of background apps using the radio. Why? Because JiveTalk in the background constantly keeping the radio connection open so it can receive updates EATS THE BATTERY. I am MUCH happier with IM+ NOT running and still being able to notify me. Saves on battery, and I can have more apps keep me informed. I can have TONS of apps inform me on iPhone, while on other platforms, running them all in the background keep radio active will drain battery, and eat away at RAM. 50 programs informing you? Can you do that in your platform efficiently? I don’t think so.

    @Chris Cox

I’m sorry but I can’t let you say that Apple innovated downloadable apps straight to your phone. I was able to download an ebay application to my nextel phone back in 2000. They also had many other applications like banking and stock market and weather apps. Also, when I made the move to verizon a few years later, they too had apps that were free and ones that you could purchase and download straight to your phone.

Apple may have created a more organized or eye friendly way of doing this but they definitely did not innovate downloadable applications straight from your phone. They simply branded a name for it and advertised the hell out of it.
