Palm App Catalog cracks one million downloads
Eighteen days after the Palm Pre was released in retail outlets across the US, Sprint users have managed to push the Palm App Catalog past the one million download mark with 1,015,038 downloads as of yesterday. This means that for the 150,000 or so Pre handsets RBC analyst Mike Abramsky estimates Sprint sold thus far (official numbers have not been released by Palm or Sprint), each has downloaded an average of about seven applications and the average application has been downloaded roughly 33,800 times. These numbers are made even more impressive when the fact that only 30 applications are currently available in the App Catalog is considered. Remember, the SDK has to this date been available only to a select few and most of the applications found within are still in beta. Let’s also not forget that countless Sprint customers are still waiting for new shipments of the Pre which, as expected, has proven difficult to keep in stock. If all of Sprint and Palm’s ducks were in a row prior to launch (handset supply, open SDK, etc) just imagine where we’d be right now.

frankly, with any maths this seems very difficult, some one needs to investigate this, palm has not come out with number of phones sold and with less than 500 apps , its seems foul play with app servers. now days it is not that impossible to show this kind of results.
this is by speculation only, not by hard facts(numbers not released by sprint or palm). are we sure Zach E didn’t write up this one? apps are all the rage, so of course they are going to download every single one (being only 30 total)…

@ lorinser according to estimates almost a couple hundred thousand people. I know quite a few. And who owns a 3gs I have never seen one in the wild… Oh wait they look exactly the same as the old iphone so maybe I have never mind.

Actually checked out a Pre today and was very impressed. Webpages and gMaps loaded very quick with Wifi off. The device felt decent and the keyboard is useable but not great. WebOS is very nice. I’d say its just as good as the iPhone with the Storm(which I have) not even in the top 8. Boo.

As an app developer I’m totally pissed at how palm has botched this launch… they tell the developers that it’s as simple as building HTML web apps, yet they’ve not yet given us the tools to write one… major fail…

First of all, I have a Pre and I love it; but yeah the lack of apps is frustrating. I really want Palm to get on this soon– I would love to see MLB At Bat and XM apps.
