Palm App Catalog cracks one million downloads
Eighteen days after the Palm Pre was released in retail outlets across the US, Sprint users have managed to push the Palm App Catalog past the one million download mark with 1,015,038 downloads as of yesterday. This means that for the 150,000 or so Pre handsets RBC analyst Mike Abramsky estimates Sprint sold thus far (official numbers have not been released by Palm or Sprint), each has downloaded an average of about seven applications and the average application has been downloaded roughly 33,800 times. These numbers are made even more impressive when the fact that only 30 applications are currently available in the App Catalog is considered. Remember, the SDK has to this date been available only to a select few and most of the applications found within are still in beta. Let’s also not forget that countless Sprint customers are still waiting for new shipments of the Pre which, as expected, has proven difficult to keep in stock. If all of Sprint and Palm’s ducks were in a row prior to launch (handset supply, open SDK, etc) just imagine where we’d be right now.

Every application I have ever had on any of my phones were applications that were downloaded and installed by my phone itself.
Every application I have ever had on any of my phones were applications that were downloaded and installed by my phone itself. My enV (the original 2006 model) has always had news, weather, stock market, mobile banking applications that can be downloaded through verizon’s get it now.
Chris, so your saying that your phone just downloads billable charges to your account by itself? wow sounds like I need to switch to the big red machine
@Chris
Ummmm No, it was not a single place to download all apps. There were mobile sites that let you download J2RE or BREW programs from a mobile WEB PAGE, but in no way was it as convenient or a one stop shop for ALL software. Show me this ability for smartphones, not for cheezy java based crappletes you got on dumbphones.
And … you cant “let” me? Your a nobody. You dont give me permission for anything.
WTF is going on with people these days?!
People are saying dumb shit like I love my phone I love my Mac or pc are we really out of touch?
Do any of you have sex anymore, if so get some more, It’s like apple made it easy for assholes to feel like tech nerds I bet half of you didn’t have a smart phone before the I-phone
And everyone and I mean everyone with a blackberry should be smack around just for mentioning it as a smart phone it’s the most boring device I ever used
Out the box with no apps the palm pre is far better than the i-phone and the i-phone 3g now the 3gs that’s something else it’s a good smart phone; I have to give them that. but just because of all these low life’s with i-phones it makes not want to get it , s60 has more features than the g1, palm pre and the iPhone 3gs and if you look and the 3 smart phones they all looks nice but it’s old shit that’s just gotten a face lift , s60 has out the box 30fps recording 5mp cam sd cards from 2gb to 16gb and built in memory Bluetooth stereo Bluetooth files to other devices wifi mms video chat and all the features that soon to come to the rest of the so call smart phones, I really hope when Steve jobs dies all his I-phones bitches die with him and than maybe the real tech Nerds reclaim they world going back to Linux and free apps the way it use to be.
And what smart phone do I have I have the G1 unlocked a wacky berry bold unlocked, Nokia n97 and n95 8 GB and E90 a palm pre HTC HD unlocked and n86 with 8mp cam and almost forgot just got HTC touch pro 2
Ps fuck you new smart phones users I hate you all so very much and that go’s to apple little cheer leaders and rim cornballs……
^^^^^has deep seeded issues that need resolving
@sadavyk,
For one thing, s60 devices do have more features than 3Gs right out of the box. But its the apps that keep me with iPhone. They look and feel next generation, making everything else look like throwbacks. And yes, s60 is in the outdated category. The moment s60 gets apps with the same quality, I will put them in the same league.
And … Pre fanboys, iPhone fanboys, Windows Mobile fanboys … they are all fanboys and get crazy at times. Pre fanboys get downright nuts, and there is nothing wrong with being a fan of something. BUT …. anyone that loses their head over technology and hates the world because of it are the ones with problems. It doesn’t take a tech nerd to love what they have. But it takes HUGE tech nerd to hate the world because a gadget pisses them off so much. Your the one that seems like the nerdy loser here.
@Chris
And … technically the env can’t run apps. It only supports running J2ME, and the apps you run are J2ME apps. I absolutely HATE J2ME software. Performance wise, they can’t touch actual device software run on Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, s60, or iPhone.
Your phone is not a smartphone. It is a dumbphone that cannot run software without the help of J2ME. We are talking about smartphones, not your POS dumbphone. EnV is a sidekick wanna be device for the pre-teen crowd that can’t afford anything better.
ok verizon’s get it now is not a mobile website. I click get it now. I click games. I click Pac-Man and it downloads..free of charge. Now you want to see a smartphone do it. I have a palm 755p my company gave me to use as a work phone. I scroll down and click “get apps” and yes it is a mobile website but I still get weather, news, traffic, sports, music, tv, movies, education, chat and messaging, travel tools, tools, and finance for categories. I click on tools and I scroll down to find the app I want and click buy.
It takes longer to go through the drive through at the bank than it does to get an app.
and yes, I am a nobody. I am also a nobody that is going to buy a phone for something other than it application store.
ABOUT “Sadavyk”
Another articulate person with an agenda. Probably an employee of Nokia or has a Nokia-bias of some sort.
So I’d say he’s one of Scropula’s shills, except – although he’s reasonably articulate, he’s so stupid and such an ASSHOLE. His analyses are stupid, and he *is* an asshole. There are few things clearer than that.
Annoys me when people like this tool pull the card that says “get a life,” or “you need more sex,” or “you’re gay,” because some of us love tech blogs (well for me, only BGR (I never post anywhere else)).
Sadvykike, not one single person is going to read your hateful drivel and say, you know, that asshole with the funny name is right. What am I doing with such stupid opinions and obsessions. He’s right. I’m going to get a life and stop being so gay and go get some heterosexual sex right away. Dummy. Not one. You don’t lead, you don’t enlighten, you spew hate. That’s why you’re probably not a shill because if it ever came to light that this asshole fucker (you) was posting for Nokia’s benefit, the embarrassment to them would be too great.
A lot of us, yours truly included, love phones too much, read tech stuff too much, should get a life and have more sex (I’m all in favor of that part). But we like this stuff; you don’t, and you don’t like our “stupidity.” So leave. I promise, not one single one of us will ever say, whatever happened to that Sandyke guy, I really miss his posts.
You won’t be missed. Go away. Your blood pressure may go down and we’ll all be a lot happier. You’ll be happier unless you’re one of those monsters who gets off on being angry all the time and spreading hate anonymously.
I have a BlackBerry Bold. My wife has a curve. And I lovingly keep every BlackBerry I’ve ever owned. I can be found asshole, not like your anonymous cowardly ass.

I have a Palm 755p and it had a small paid app store. So all you people saying Apple did it first get your facts straight.
In regards to Dash 3G and Touch Pro2 event in San Francisco July 14 where will this event take place?
the funny part about it…is every app is usable. maybe apple shoud start observing there catalog and compare. even with only 30 apps (which i only have 8 of in my pre)every one helps contribute to functionality.I love my pre…and since bg hasnt spoke on it yet i will…not only is the app catalog still growing so will available handsets..http://www.everythingpre.com/news/webos/$99-palm-eos-to-challenge-apple?-20090625205/
PALM EOS YEAAA
O and they are full functioning apps….not web apps like the iphone when it first came out….ACTUAL USABLE APPS.
y all the hate apple fanboys?? gosh dont get upset because we are actually having a good launch. looking at the company palm is doing nice right now. stop hating!!! lol
@Rachael
Just tried to find out for you but the link says the event is already at capacity…sorry
Why wait for Palm to release an SDK? It comes with every copy of windows already; Notepad. Silly webapps.
Considering 150,000ish ppl have the Palm Pre and they hit 1 million downloads in less than 30 days with only 30 apps, I think they are doing pretty darn good.
And for those of you who are trying to compare it to the launch of the iphone app store, sure, they sold 60 million in the first month BUT they also had 3 millionish iphones sold at that point and they launched with over 500 apps.
Just look at the numbers…
On Palms end if you take 1 million apps sold divided by the 150,000 people that have the Pre that is approx 6 downloads per person.
And on Apples end if you take the 60 million apps sold divided by the 3 million people that owned the iphone at that time, that comes out to 20 downloads per person.
Let’s see here, which number looks better…. 6 downloaded apps out of 30 possible or 20 downloaded apps out of over 500 possible?
Come on guys, I’m sure you can do the math…
I can’t believe ppl still have Palms!!!! R u serious!!!!!!!
yes they do you homo
