Verizon Wireless rolls out new GPS-unlocked ROM for the Samsung Saga
Thus far, Verizon Wireless has made good on 66 percent of its promise to unlock GPS on its latest Windows Mobile handsets. First we had an update for the HTC Touch Pro and today we have an update for the Samsung Saga. Left behind and still waiting for GPS freedom, for the time being, is the Samsung Omnia. Samsung Saga owners, though, should take a closer look at the newly-posted CE07 Software Upgrade which includes “Open Standalone LBS Supported and Performance Enhanced. (This may support 3rd party applications)” as part of its change log. Users who have updated their Sagas are initially reporting that the GPS is now unlocked on COM 9 and ROM cookers are already in the process of extracting the new ROM in order to embed the GPS unlock into custom ROMS. Interested parties can obtain the software update directly from Verizon’s support page for the Samsung Saga. Happy GPS-ing!

verizon needs to get over themselves and unlock everything! and how about some wifi?
can’t be true, could it? Mr.Glansburg.
Well, can’t fault them for nailing “First half of 2009″ on the head.
OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE!?!
Son of a ‘B’. Can I get some love for the Omnia!
oMg i wiSh dAt veRiZon wOulD cOmE ouT wiTh tHe tO-to-To-tO tOuR LoL
wifi? the saga does have wifi
of course it has wifi…some clowns just try to perpetuate myths so they feel better about their icrap. BGR is not very fast though…I emailed them about this release around 6ish last night, so nearly 24 hours later…
How about the Omni i910… was also promised by end of June
Congrats to the 3 Saga owners. Freedom!

@stephen–and when will you have freedom with the 3Gs and ATT? Sending many mms messages lately? Say, is that a cincinnati bowtie you’re wearing?
@StevenGlansburg:
‘Freedom’ and ‘iPhone’ in the same post. Heh,
@ Steven Glansburg
I lol’d in class. Everyones stared at me lmao
Every time I open BGR and see Verizon as the headline I think it is about the Tour. Let’s not update on anything Verizon until Tour comes out.
Three users? There are three users just withing 10 feet of me. It’s a business phone and I’m going to deploy shitloads of these and the Ozone when it comes out on Monday.
Agreed Josh. I hope its unlocked on the tuh tuh tour!
funny… i already “upgraded” to a bb8830 from my omnia… didnt like wm7.1. vzw should stop crippling their phones. hopefully this is the beginning…
ok so im thinking vzw WILL come thru with omnia update now
Well color me releaved…
You know I was counting the days to July for Operation Class Action. I still say Verizon should be sued for freezing out locationed based application developers. A lot of opportunity costs have built up and hurt consumers.
Where is the US Justice department when you need them?
@Hi, you’ve been watching too much lawyer tv. Make up your mind, federal action or a civil class action. Who are going to be the named plaintiffs? There’s no viable lawsuit here, simply no cause of action at all. Why would July matter, there was no promise of implementation, no contractual obligation, nothing. Let us know when you pass the bar and become a real attorney. Or at least when you get your GED.
Omnia HAS Wifi and as it seems is LAST on the list for GPS unlock though.
Yup, last for sure. Probably for good reason…it’s sold more than 10x the tp and saga combined, so there is a much larger user base, which means more problems. Just look at the reviews of the phone and you’ll see how many people can’t do simple tasks on it and complain that it sucks…what is going to happen when all those people try to flash the rom? they’re probably gearing up the tech support!
I’m so sick of people just reading what others have said about Verizon and continue to post dumb shit like “They cripple their phones, no wifi”
I’m going to guess 99% of the people have never even had a Verizon phone, secondly as you can see they are fixing the problem. They have spent tons of money on their GPS and it sucks for them because now it was money down the drain, so of course they wouldn’t want to unlock GPS, you wouldn’t want to either. But they realize that they pretty much have to to please the customers and they are doing it. Which is more than I can say for other companies. The wifi thing, a lot of the Windows mobile phones have wifi so I’m not sure what this argument is about. Every Blackberry after the Tour will have wifi. Now if your going to try and bash Verizon can you start coming up with something else. Its just getting really annoying the same comments people keep copying and regurgitating on every Verizon post.
I have Verizon and I’d say that at least 95% (if not more) of their phones are horribly crippled. Most consumers can’t afford the few un-crippled high end smartphones (and their mandatory internet plans) that Verizon has to offer. Is it so hard Verizon to make a decent non smart phone that isn’t crippled? Also, Verizon phones are way too expensive for what you get. I called one of my local Verizon stores so I could take advantage of their deal where I can get a subsidized phone if I renew my contract after one year, and I was told that the cheapest phone I could get is $100. How is it that the most basic phone Verizon has cost $100 subsidized? Unbelievable.
Sonya, I have a Verizon Touch Pro, and trust me, it’s a horrendously crippled phone. What’s worse, the firmware update introduces numerous bugs as well. I hope the Saga folks have better luck. And they still haven’t fixed the delayed ring problem.
