Verizon Wireless rolls out new GPS-unlocked ROM for the Samsung Saga
Thus far, Verizon Wireless has made good on 66 percent of its promise to unlock GPS on its latest Windows Mobile handsets. First we had an update for the HTC Touch Pro and today we have an update for the Samsung Saga. Left behind and still waiting for GPS freedom, for the time being, is the Samsung Omnia. Samsung Saga owners, though, should take a closer look at the newly-posted CE07 Software Upgrade which includes “Open Standalone LBS Supported and Performance Enhanced. (This may support 3rd party applications)” as part of its change log. Users who have updated their Sagas are initially reporting that the GPS is now unlocked on COM 9 and ROM cookers are already in the process of extracting the new ROM in order to embed the GPS unlock into custom ROMS. Interested parties can obtain the software update directly from Verizon’s support page for the Samsung Saga. Happy GPS-ing!

Awesome, it bricked my Saga. I even went so far as to follow the directions, right down to using Vista 32-bit instead of 7. But sure enough, as soon as it reset itself after saying “device upgrade complete, etc.” Samsung logo and nothing more. Bastards.
Oh well, iPhone 3G S is on its way anyway. No loss.
@Trogdor: Verizon phones being “crippled” has more to do with their reliance on Qualcomm BREW than any decision Verizon made. Along with the move to LTE, VZW will be announcing their new “dumbphone” platform this summer (July 28th at their developer conference in San Jose.)
OK OK OK I never thought in a Million YEARS I would get involved in a silly debate on a PHONE Blog but I had thought I had seen it ALL until NOW.
All I see here are PAID BLOGGERS attacking Verizon. THINK about it people. Just like during the elections, people have learned how POWERFUL Blogs are for Marketing and the less Honorable people and companies pay people to post rants and false complaints in order to bash the competition.
Ask yourselves WHY would a IPHONE lover be on a SAMSUNG or VERIZON thread anyway??? Thats right…simply to post negative things in order to pump up a different product. That is why you see posts that OBVIOUSLY come from people who do NOT have the products mentioned.
What made me post this?? I just saw a person touting the NEW IPHONE on this thread LOL
The BRAND new IPHONE has less features and is rated LOWER INTERNATIONALLY than MANY other phones. The OMNIA by SAMSUNG and available on VERIZON makes that phone look 30 years out of date, OMGAWD they are BRAGGING that it has VIDEO!!! My OLD Razr V3 3g HAD VIDEO!!!!
That tells you. these clueless rants are pure marketers trying to bash Verizon and its Products.
So Little honor or Brains around these days.
@NiickNas,
…this message is brought to you by Verizon Wireless.
Funny… When professional TROLLS make their comments it is so Obvious.
For those who care.. I do not now or have I EVER worked for VERIZON of ANY of its affiliates or vendors. If that asshat Chickernatr knew what he was talking about he might know that even I have a Beef with my phone. I hate that it has such low Volume on its MP3 player.
I guess I cost him his Nickel a post commission on this thread so he is pissed at me now.
…and yet another message brought to you by Verizon Wireless.
omnia gps is unlocked in a new rom that i have for the idiots who don’t google enough. email me and i’ll supply u with omnia gps rom links wolfordtw at g mail
IDIOTS?? Let’s see.
If somehow YOU have the O_F_F_I_C_I_A_L ROM that is Supported and Backed by VERIZON and somehow ONLY you have it since there has been no Official announcement, then the only IDIOTS would be the people who used them and risked Bricking their phones because you think you are so cool you can call people IDIOTS.
HACKED ROMS ARE NOT SUPPORTED PEOPLE! DO NOT TRUST THEM .
USE THEM AT YOUR OWN PERIL!
How about an ON TOPIC post?
I flashed my phone with absolutely no problems. It shows the correct new version.
I have tried many settings and still can’t get GPS to talk to applications. The author noted many people have good luck with com9, good, but at what baud rate?
It will take hours to try all the com/rate combinations. Any help is appreciated.
Omnia owners; my recommendation is to get the hacked rom. It works great. I had not problems installing it. Google maps works great and so does FreeCaddie (for you golfers)
What!??!?… no x64 Vista support?
WTF?
As an update:
I wish I could go back to the previous version. This update kinda made GPS work. It is SO SLOW as to be unusable. Absolute crap.
Also, my signal has gone to hell. I have so many dead spots now that weren’t there before that I can’t even use my phone most of the time right in town. They totally screwed up something in the radio.
I WANT THE OLD VERSION BACK!

They totally screwed up SMS threading too. Now you have to click into each and every message in a thread to reset the unread indicator. You can’t just go to the thread anymore. Sounds like a small irritation. I thought so too, but it becomes a PITA quickly when you’re used to it working RIGHT.

For the dead spots issue… did you do a *228 and reprogram?
