MetroPCS crushes international calling; unlimited to over 100 countries, $5

Seriously… Crushed. MetroPCS is among a handful of smaller carriers here in the US that continues to make waves and this morning the tiny scrapper knocked one clear out of the park. If you live in a MetroPCS-covered area of the US and make any international calls whatsoever, you should be very interested to learn of the carrier’s new $5 unlimited international calling plan. $5 — unlimited to over 100 different countries. Untouchable. The new unlimited international add-on requires an unlimited national calling plan of $40, $45 or $50 per month, which is hardly unreasonable. MetroPCS CEO Roger D. Linquist had this to say:

Unlimited international calling at such an affordable rate can dramatically reduce monthly long distance costs and is yet another example of MetroPCS’ commitment to providing industry-leading value to consumers in today’s tough economic climate. MetroPCS is eliminating the worry of high international calling fees, counting minutes and dialing a connecting number, typical of traditional calling cards. With MetroPCS’ international calling, consumers are truly unlimited now more than ever.

Rock on.

    Its a great deal…

Because MetroPCS coverage kinda sucks and drops calls with its over capacity network… And dont fall for the “Extended Coverage” crap – thats just Cricket, and most of it requires a new phone.

I wish that were a true statement. Its too bad Metro PCS doesnt work outside of your coverage city. Which in my opinon still doesnt have alot of them. Coverage in Topeka & Pittsburgh but NONE in N.O, Seattle, Minneapolis….how do you leave out the D.C/Baltimore Area???

Their coverage in Atlanta is actually pretty wide-spread. And if you don’t travel much, for $50 a month (NO CONTRACT), you don’t have much to worry about. Just saying.

Is it such a wonderful deal? Have you ever wondered why you can call (”unlimited”) 100 countries and 1000 destinations for $5 and not call anywhere in the USA (”unlimited”) for less than $40? Or why Vonage, Packet8, and Skype allow you to call anywhere in the USA for $10, $24, and $3 (Yes, $3) respectively? Telecom industry is ripping you off and you don’t even know it. It’s your right to have low-cost phone calls–domestic and international. Speak out and write to your congressional and senate representatives about this.

Zach, you may as well add that it will expire one day. Once they lure enough customers and gain good footing in the industry. Unless they are planning to close their company, or relying on supernatural powers to keep em afloat.

You obvoiusly have no clue how the industry operates!
Every carrier uses different ways to make money. Every1 has pricey features that offsets the ‘losses’ of the other features/plans they sell for less to the consumer. But fact remains. It costs $$$ to carry phone conversations. And we are not talking VOIP here.

I don’t disagree that cellular costs are generally too high in the U.S., but you can’t really compare companies that maintain and builds wireless infrastructure across the whole country to companies that merely provide a service over someone else’s network. Skype is a great deal, but you still have to pay someone for Internet service.

Do we really have to remind you guys how TMO hiked prices for unlimited messeging lately? And that ‘loyalty’ plan is a desperate move to keep subscribers from switching.
That is the bottom line here. Its a gamble on the part of MetroPcs to gain ground, and hope that it’l pay off in the long run.

Either the incumbent carriers are intentionally overcharging everyone for international calls….. or Metro is losing $$$ on international calls to attract more users onto its network? Sprint complained about how much money it costs them for interconnection charges so I’m interested to know how Metro can do this?

Either way, this is a fantastic deal for someone who doesnt’t travel much but needs to keep in touch with family/friends in other countries.

    I don’t use Metro because I prefer GSM/HSPA over T-Mobile USA’s network, but I won’t knock a good deal when I see it.

    Way to go Metro!

I remember reading a while back that Cricket and Metro were talking about a merger. Does anyone know why it didn’t happen? They have such complementary coverage that it seems to be a great fit but I’m guessing that someone was asking for too much $$$$ and the other walked away.

Read the fine print: You can’t call wireless phones on this plan, even in Mexico. And if you’re roaming in Cricket territory plan on paying $0.19/minute. Just more hidden fees and smoke and mirrors from MetroPCS>

how about posting a list of the countries and whether or not it includes mobile or landline calls. It’s really weak that Metro makes a customer put in phone numbers to see if it covers that country. Post a list and make it easy for customer to know what is or isn’t included. Same for the mexico plan, supposedly 200 cities, but which ones?

Truthguy? The is way more misinformation in your post than anything that even resembles truth…see below, and if you actually read the fine print you’d see you’re totally wrong:

    >>You can’t call wireless phones on this plan, even in Mexico.

Yes, both land & cellphones are covered on this unlimited international plan. the calls to mexico for $3 did NOT include Cellphones, but this plan does.
    >>And if you’re roaming in Cricket territory plan on paying $0.19/minute.
If you were to be useing Cricket coverage, they call it ‘enhanced home roaming’ and costs nothing per minute. You only need to be on one of the higher calling plans ($45 or $50) or add the EHR as a seperate feature ($5)…the $0.19/min is for when you roam onto a VZN area, which as I see it, and have used it while traveling, is a freaking pretty fair deal. $10 to use my phone while traveling 1,00 miles over a 12 day period where Text messaging was free, and the only calls that cost me were while I was at the grand canyon and in a ghost town…and those were long business calls. MetroPCS does have smoketho…smoke, ’cause those guys are on fire.
