Rogers introduces new international Travel Packages for cheaper voice roaming

Let’s face it, cell phone usage in Canada is expensive but making a few phone calls while abroad can result in a bill that can do more more damage to your wallet than your mortgage payments. So call it a response to the global recession or a way to lure people into using their phones overseas but Rogers has come out with some new Travel Packages that can actually save subscribers anywhere from $15 to well over $100 dollars. The Travel Packages are good for one month once added to your account and require no contract. They’re also automatically removed from your account at the beginning of your next billing cycle. Rogers, you know what you can do with your roaming fees. How on earth do you justify the fact that Americans can roam in Canada for 20c a minute, and the very best rate you can give us is 60c a minute?

for the last 3 years i have found the best way around this ridiculous situation is a little ugly but for us regular travelers to the US it’s the only way. Here’s what i do..

I have an AT&T number, (you can either get a regular plan through your company, or you can simply purchase a prepaid card). You then take your rogers number, and forward it to a local canadian landline. (your home number or your work direct line) then forward that landline to your US number. This way, no one knows your using a US number, you get all your calls, and when you make calls in the US it’s cheap.

the fact that rogers don’t have comprehensive agreements for roaming with AT&T for Voice AND DATA is a joke – and it has nothing to do with AT&T, rogers are too happy to continue gouging canadians….don’t be a sucker, if more people opt out, they will do something about it.

    Thumb up Thumb down +1
