Nokia 3720, Nokia’s first water/dust resistant handset, due out in September
As much success as Nokia has had — and still has — in emerging markets, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume the Finnish company’s lineup is already jam-packed full of durable handsets. That assumption, at it were, would be wrong. Say hello to the company’s first water and dust resistant handset, the Nokia 3720. With IP54 certification, the 3720 will also be shock resistant if and when it drops (wink, wink) some time in September. Beyond that, our guess is that we’re looking at a pretty inexpensive handset that will run S40 and never make it to this side of the pond. Tears of indignation or shrugs of indifference?

Thanks for posting this, but it is definitely not Nokia’s first water/dust resistant handset. Nokia used to have the Sport series, and I can recall at least two water and dust resistant handsets:
1) Nokia 5210 Sport in 2002
2) Nokia 5500 Sport in 2006
There are probably more.
A fucking car ran over my nokia phone once a couple years ago and the most damage it had was a a scraped screen.
So yea they are pretty durable , but I could care less about this phone .
I once dropped my iPhone in the toilet. I had a few too many jack & cokes at a happy hour, thought I was about to hurl, went to the restroom at the bar…forgot that I had my iphone on my shirt pocket…leaned over and the iphone slid out of the pocket and went in the toilet…then i hurled. I was on Craigslist looking for a new one the next day.

There are at least 2 other models not mentioned above the 5100 and the 5140 (well here in GSMland)
I’ve used the 5100 as my ’skiphone’ for about 3 years now after a nicer phone crapped out on me when I got 2 flakes of snow on it on day 1 of a trip. The other great thing about the 5100 is that it still has a useful battery life of 3 days or so, even with moderate use.
I’d definitely checkout the 3720 when it comes out as its about time i upgraded the skiphone and it could be a sweet upgrade and nicer looking than a sonim or similar.
all phones should be dust resistant, this is not a feature. fail

@CanisMajor Thanks for your feedback. I do remember the 5210 and 5500 but as far as I can recall neither of those handsets were IP54 certified, nor did they have any similar third-party certification. I could certainly be wrong though.

this iised going to be a hit phone in india. I went there past december and wore a plain white shirt for a day it turned brown by the end of the day. So you are correct it is targeting emerging markets i dont see a use of it myself.
I think this phone may do well in the US and elsewhere if Nokia (or carriers) market it as being durable. It’s too bad that for all the glitz and features of Iphones or Blackberrys they become expensive bricks if dropped on the floor or in water (or used in a hard rain).
