Really? This is worth an article? As much as the anti-apple fanboi in me wants to rail against the Iphone, I’ll just critique the value of a post that, even after reading it a second time, I don’t sense any tongue-in-cheek tone to warrant posting that a space will affect my customers (3 and counting, been open an hour) asking about “the new Iphone.”

Yea from a marketing perspective I think they could’ve done much better but (like the article mentions) this is Apple we’re talking about here.

Even in the midst of their “branding mega fail” they’ve moved over 1 million 3GS’s. Not too bad for something that’s pretty much an incremental upgrade over the 3G.

A true testament to the power of that shiny Apple logo.

I think the big point BGR is trying to establish is that Apple made a mistake. They were inconsiderate to the people who research devices prior to purchasing them; mainly the people who use search engines. Apple is known greaatly for there great advertising techniques and Apple hasn’t really made any noticable mistakes for a while now. I’m not going to say that this little marketting glitch wouldn’t have happened if Steve Jobs were in the office but I’d guess the likelyness for someone to point it our and do something about it would be Steve. I found it funny that Apple changed the product name soon after Zach posted this article, thus directly implying, that Apple is aware of the flaw (why fix it if it’s not broken) and that they tryed to fix it.

I think the fail is in the naming itself. You seriously couldn’t make up a new name besides adding an “S” that could be easily confused for plural?? Oh and how about differentiating it cosmetically so that people can actually give a damn about it…

Um, it’s probably because the iPhone 3G in plural form is iPhone 3Gs. Hence the space for the new product.

Google searches already have exposed this.

If you look at the same site now (2:17 EST 6/24), all of the spelling has been changed to iPhone 3GS.

As a marketing professional, this kind of stuff is actually important from a branding perspective. I found this interesting and shocking that the iconic Apple would let something like this happen (and that they would go with 3GS or 3G S in the first place…).

I don’t know if I would call this a ‘MEGAFAIL’…but definitely interesting.

@RM: a major part of the reason they have so many sheep lining up to get the iphone, is because of the branding efforts of apple. U need to keep thing fresh, unique and to the point. I honestly thought that the “S” was a cool move. Very apple like. Subtle, clever, elegant. Every one else is adding letters to numbers these days. It seems to be the latest fad. Eventually ull have phone names like “iphone 3GSWEARELOOSERS”. U guys like that? Looks like my 135i’s vin number lol. Instead of having something boring and un original like iphone 3GS, u have something unique and interesting like Iphone 3G S. I love it. A subtle difference like that, make a world of difference in a saturated market to the consumer. U know ur dealing with someone who’s not a copy of everyone else, who’s a copy of everyone else. Simple, quaint, pretty, elegant…Apple.

By removing the space, Apple created even more free advertising for the iPhone 3GS.

Now that is wonderful news for Apple. It keeps them in people’s minds. No company gets as much free advertising as Apple.

This post makes it seem as though the space was a mistake, or unintentional. But even if it isn’t the implication, my opinion on the thinking behind the branding is that the addition of the letter fits a piece of hardware that has only upgrades to a previous model. The keyword remains “3G”, and as far as searchability (although I don’t assume there are many people who make a decision to buy this phone because of a Google search and a subsequent enlightenment of the existence of the iPhone), “3G” and “iPhone” are the keywords that have been embedded into the market already, and the addition of the S simply designates an upgrade, the way a “-R” usually does for automobiles, or “[space] Pro” does for many other consumer products. Plus, I see this iteration of the iPhone as simply a filler to keep the hype up between now and the next generation, multi-carrier (US) 4G models which will require more marketing power, rightfully so, than an upgraded legacy model.
